Audi Connect obsolete 3G convertion to Mojio 4G

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have not found any forums on the subject of the Audi Connect 3G service ending this month for some of the 2019 and many of the older Audi. Sorry if I missed it.

Since the At&T 3G service is shutting down the end of Jan 2022 on both my 2018 Q7 and S5 I was researching the alternative Mojio and Bosch 4G module as a dealer installed option. The service would be with TMobile Business.

Has anyone checked with their dealer about the upgrade?

    Thanks

Dealer installed option, also known as Motion for Audi Connect (more info here) is an OBD-II dongle which supplies GPS, LTE, etc. to the vehicle. Made by a company called GOSUNCN under the product number GD500. From what I understand, you basically have to connect the dongle as a Bluetooth device, which apparently can conflict with CarPlay (see here).

I reached out to my dealer here in CO and I have an appointment with them for the install in a couple weeks. I expect it to be pretty quick, and honestly hope they don’t see any need to plug their computers into my car. The app shows a bit of info about connecting for the first time, too:

I called my dealer and they do not know what system brand they are going to install nor what features it will have. They do know it will cost $650 to install. That’s the important part of the mystery for them. I use the MyAudi app primarily to check the functions of the cars such as windows up and door lock status. Makes me feel at ease when I park and don’t remember if I locked the car. Not knowing what features I will have with a new system I’m going to wait for the upgrade to see what shakes out.

    Thanks for your information.

$650 to install?! That’s insane. It should be free. I’d call another dealer and talk to their service dept about Motion for Audi Connect specifically.

I just noticed the “Motion” scan you posted is from Mojio which is the same company I was referring to for the upgrade. The Mojio site says it is working with Bosch and TMOBILE.

I just got this done yesterday. The dealer did it. Didn't cost me anything but also they really didn't explain what i need to do. They did leave the little guide in my cup holder, so guess I need to do an app download at follow the directions.

I'd recommend just replacing the entire unit with the rsnav unit
That has built in 4g LTE
And has much better features than stock

Please let know how this works for you. The dealer said they have to shutdown my existing system so I don’t get a fault message. Sound fishy.

I don't get how it works. I did all the registration and it shows my car but keeps saying I need to "take my first trip" even though I drove around yesterday. So not sure..

If you get the letter in the mail from Audi, it specifically stipulates this is a free upgrade. If a dealer is trying to charge you for it, chances are your car doesn’t have 3G and/or the dealer is trying to fleece you.

I got the Audi letter yesterday stating the upgrade was free as you said. I have a recall service appointment next week so I will ask about the $650 verses free. I would like to think the dealer doesn’t know about the Audi announcement and not trying to gouge me.

Just received my letter as well stating that Audi will be offering the free upgrade. Will have to set the appointment but appreciate the update as I was a bit concerned about this issue as well!

Just had it done, it's free. Does not interfere with CarPlay whatsoever (but I don't have wireless CarPlay, so who knows). They device is installed inside the driver side storage area. They do a software update on the MMI as well, which for me, restored the Google Earth Maps functionality (my RS5 is a 2018 and the Google Earth Maps was removed at one point).

All my OBDEleven customizations went away, so I had to re-apply them.

Weird place to put it. Why wouldn't they plug it right into the OBD-II port?

Also, if they plug in to update the MMI, RIP my f*ckin' non-TD1'd Audi. Didn't go to the dealer for anything except recalls/Audi Care anyway.

The device is in the storage compartment with a cable that goes to the OBD port.

These aren't worth it and seem like a data harvesting scheme more than anything. I had mine done and it won't monitor windows or doors or lock and unlock the car. It has very limited functionality but does track your every move and critique your driving. It does have the capability to make an emergency call over Bluetooth in the event of a crash. It has to be paired to the secondary phone slot in your MMI. Problem is, if you use Android Auto or Carplay, when you plug your phone in Bluetooth is deactivated. Tl:dr: if you are actively using AA or Carplay emergency services won't work. Huge thread about all of this on audiworld and some additional pics in the thread in the S4 forums here on audizine about the botch job they do to install the module and hack up your storage cubby, while taking away a ton of usable space.

Wow, 100% fuck that shit, now that I've read more.

    Audiworld thread.

    In summary:
    - Holes drilled/cut in side storage cubby
    - Monitors driving habits, but not locks/windows/errors
    - If you plug in to use CarPlay/Android Auto because you have to (many of us), you lose any BT device connectivity, specifically emergency services provided by the dongle
    - The dongle itself is massive and has an extension cable for some reason

Seems completely half-assed on Audi's part. Since this recall is offered through 2027, I may let the next owner worry about it. If the monitoring is ever able to be toggled off, and the OG MyAudi data is available, then I'll reconsider. Definitely cancelling my appointment for now.

So just confirming, this plugs into OBDII port? If so, I will avoid since I have a JB4 plugged in

Interesting… My 19 S5 SB is not affected, but my wife’s 17 Q7 is. The funny thing is that her Q7 do not have the driver side cubby. I guess I have to flip over to the Q7 forums to see if anybody had it done.

I would not be surprised if a savvy lawyer took this and filed a class-action suit. It’s absolutely unacceptable that a major feature like CarPlay/AA would be essentially disabled if a user wants active emergency SOS services (and vice-versa). This is a hack job solution that seems like it was the result of last-minute penny-pinching.

I wonder if there's any way to swap out the 3G module, or if it's integrated into something else. I thought I read elsewhere that the 3G connected services module was separate from others, and the newer (2018+) MMI system was modular and meant for these sorts of upgrades.

Gonna reach out to Europrice, as it appears that the cellular module may be a part of another gateway module or similar.

i saw someone posted the affected vehicles on AudiWorld forum. https://www.audiusa.com/us/web/en/in...nturn-faq.html I have an 18 S5 SB. I think ill pass on this "upgrade" since i dont even see my car on the list. Maybe just turn off the 3g service to not see any error codes.

Mine works now and it's hella annoying. I use wireless AA and you get this message in the phone/watch saying mojio can't connect Bluetooth. It still has all the tracking functionality but guess not emergency call. However it's annoying and I just turned off notifications in the app. Also, unless I'm missing something you have to use your phone as nothing comes up on the MMI screen. So for me it's useless as I use AA all the time.

Dealer is installing the 4g module in S5 today. The most used feature for me is the door lock check and ability to lock/unlock. Sounds like I won’t have that feature anymore. What is interesting is the dealer is doing the ‘18 S5 no charge but said the ‘18 Q7 did not qualify and would be $650. I called another Audi dealer and I have a free upgrade appointment scheduled. I now have concerns about the integrity of my current dealer.

It's not that it interferes with carplay, it's that Carplay and Android auto interferes with it. The emergency calling feature requires bluetooth to function but AA/Carplay disables bluetooth when you plug your phone it.

    I'm a bit confused about a couple of things;
    1. It looks like maps will still function, but Google Earth overlay will not... Is that accurate?
    2. @AnewMadrid says the '18 S5 is covered, but the only 'S' model I saw in the link above was the '19 RS5... did I miss something?

Maps still work not sure about the Google Earth Overlay as I strictly use wireless AA. Also the emergency functions do not work if you are using AA, that is confirmed.

My car is an 18S and my dealer is the one that actually told me about the change and performed it that day. Stevens Creek Audi in San Jose, Ca.

Hate it. Hate it. Hate it. Worthless POS app. It has me locked in at a wrong location so I have to restart everything. Won’t stay connected to Bluetooth. Uses a phone connection so can’t have a primary and secondary phone connected. Did I say I hated this app?

The only good thing having it installed is I do not get an error message on my dash. That’s it.

I'm still not getting the error on my dash, and the app still works with no visit to the dealer yet. Cool?

Great. AT&T hasn’t shut down 3G yet. It was supposed to be Feb1. My Q7 is still working on 3G. We will see at end of month.

I personally am upset to hear all of this, one of the reasons that drew me to my purchase was the old app as basic as it was it worked for what I needed for me and my partner. I even went and bought the keytag last year when I picked it up which was $70ish and I do use the app quite often (as much as I wish it was more detailed). Hearing everyone's story here about the sloppy install, the mismatched functionality and what would seem like a genuine lack of empathy from Audi Usa I feel it's in ALL our best interests to reach out to the Point of Contact within Audi & Mojio about our experience they will honestly never understand the depth of the way we feel unless we tell them, trust me they are not on this forum making principal decisions on how to address this moving forward, its with our voices we could see a shift in this process.

Please take a moment and share your thoughts and experiences with these two folks, I have already (I have not gone for update or this mod myself yet and prob will not until a better system is implemented to fix this issue)

Guys, I have done some extensive inquiring regarding the 3G sunset. Here are some additional facts. (Everything that is below is straight from Audi USA. I spent about 3 hours talking to 4 different Audi representatives with Audi USA including have the Technical Service Audi Advisor from my local Audi dealership on the phone at the same time.)

    1. 2017 vehicles (certain models which include the S5) are fully covered under Service Action 91CD. (Additional information below.)
    2. 2018/2019 vehicles (certain models which include the S5) with a build date between Feb 2017 to March 2018 only get partial coverage under Service Action 91CD. (Additional information below.)
    3. 2018/2019 vehicles (certain models which include the S5) with a build date after March 2018 are fully covered under Service Action 91CD, "AS LONG AS YOUR WARRENTY HAS NOT EXPIRED" otherwise bullet point 2 applies. (Additional information below.)

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    1. Model year 2017 and 2018/2019 (Build date between Feb 2017 to Mar 2018) use 3G for the free portion of your Audi Connect Services.
Note: Free Audi connect services include:

    a. Remote locking and unlocking
    b. Vehicle Status Report
    c. Parking Location
    d. Geofencing Alert
    e. Speed Alert
    f. Valet Alert
    g. Stolen Vehicle Locator
    h. Online Audi Service request.
    i. Emergency Call

    2. Audi Connect Prime and Audi Connect Plus use 4G/4G LTE. (If you pay for these services the sunset of the 3G service DO NOT EFFECT these services.)
    3. The only reason that 2017 model year is covered is due to somewhere in the 2017 model year owners manual it states that the "Free" Audi connect services will be provided for 10 years.
    4. 2018/2019 vehicles between the build date noted above the "Free" Audi connect services 10 year coverage verbiage was removed from the owners manual.
    5. 2019 vehicles and beyond after the Mar 2019 build date only used 4G/4G LTE for "All" Audi connect services.
    6. Part number for 4G retrofit is: ZAW-063-239 (Note: Part number is ONLY for the covered retrofit.)

What does the above information mean.

    * If your vehicle is a 2017 model, 2018/2019 with a build date after Mar 2018 (And your warranty is active. (Under 50,000 miles) you don't have anything to worry about.)
    * If your vehicle is a 2018/2019 model with a build date notated above you are only covered 50%. (When 3G Sunset is complete you will receive a "SOS Emergency Call Function Error" on your dash. Audi can do a program update on your MMI to stop this error. The retrofit of the 4G module is NOT included. (Audi states this will cost you between $600-$1000 dollars to have installed.) CRAZY!!!

I absolutely couldn't believe my ears when I went step by step through the details with Audi USA. It's sad that Audi is unwilling to make things "RIGHT" with their customers. I love my Audi and I care about the Audi AG. Taking the easy way out is not going to help the organizations image.

I have already taken a variety of actions to have this addressed. I cannot put that information in this post, however I do believe Audi will have to make this right for everyone at some point. Especially if Audi customers take action. The sad part is that instead of doing the "Right Thing" and making sure one of the major safety features of the car stays in tack (Without charging the customer) they are willing to roll the dice and see what happens which potentially could cost Audi AG considerably more $$ and/or someone loses their life due to the safety features not working.

Note: There is quite a bit more information regarding this issue. If you want more information so you can also take action with Audi AG yourself, reach out to me through email and I can provide it to you.
