So i picked up a good deal on a mk1 and having problems figuring out why I cant get systems ready for inspection. The car hasnt been driven in 5+ years and has unknown mods. I know for sure that it has a tune and n249 delete. It runs and drives and peaks at 24lbs of boost. I ran vcds and come to the following codes. How would I tackle these problems and just get it ready for inspection in NJ. Also, is there a way to find out what tune this guy put on it? TYIA

17695 - boost pressure control valve- open circuit
16716 knock sensor 2. signal too low- intermittent
18010 power supply terminal 30. voltage too low- intermittent

17695 is likely unplugged. maybe running a manual boost controller for whatever tune it has. you can find this between the airbox and the valve coverup near the firewall.
16716 and 18010 could be related. you might have a bad connection at the battery or a weak/failing battery.

Thank you! This was after I put a red top battery. Do you think that has to do with that?

it could be. try clearing the codes and see if they come back. i doubt that 17695 is related to the battery swap though.

So I did some investigating and looks like the previous owner just cut the n249 plug off and didn’t put a resistor. Could this cause a systems not ready? Looks like only 3 are ready. I’ve driven over 300 miles already.

17695 would be related to the N75 valve, not the N249. the N249 is under your intake manifold and the N75 is the one on your intake hose. regardless, if you meant the N75 then yes that would be the cause. however, im more concerned about the fact that it was CUT OFF and not just unplugged. is there a manual boost controller in its place? post some photos if you can, i would be interested in seeing whats been done to the engine bay area.

As far as a manual boost controller goes I’m not sure. Also, I don’t know what time he used. It hasn’t been driven in over 5 years and just changed all the fluids.

i downloaded the 2 photos from the drop box and i dont see the wires that you refer to as being cut. i can see the N75 on the forge hose and it looks like its plugged in.

On the second picture, in the middle there is a electrical tape bundle

    - - - Updated - - -

    The official code is
    17695
    - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249)
    P1287
    - 35-00
    - Open Circuit

gotcha. the second pic looks like its of the coil packs. i dont believe the wiring for the N249 is in that section of the harness. i believe the N249 is under the intake manifold so you would have to trace the wiring back from there. you might get lucky and it might just be unplugged. however, i would also peel back the electrical tape on the coil pack harness and find out why its electrical taped in the first place. they make replacement harness sections for that area due to the wires cracking from heat. i think its only like $50 from ECS.

Part of the N249 system connects above the valve cover though - can't remember which sensor it technically is though. I think a lot of people leave it plugged in, but route the vacuum hoses in a loop. I know I have it resistered on my car.

Resolved. I put a resistor on that cut off wire

Just an update for. Found out it’s a unitronic stage1+. I’m not sure why it would disable monitors.
