    2018 B9 S5 SB PCV Failure

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello fellow Audi-fans,

While driving home last night in the cold, my car started bogging during deceleration when coming to a stop. I quickly parked it and noticed it had a wandering/hunting idle bouncing between 1k and 2.5k. I also noticed a loud whistling sound from under the hood. When I placed my hand over the oil-cap I could feel suction; while attempting to remove the oil-cap I could also feel immense suction. All of this points to the PCV unit failing, introducing a rather large vacuum leak, forcing the motor to run lean and then hunt based on lambda sensor readings.

Does anyone have a DIY for the replacement of the module?

Hey, so there's no DIY replacement. There's two parts that need to be replaced. Both regulate the crankcase pressure. One is the oil separator and the other is just called "hose" but I believe it's the positive crank case regulator. I'm actually doing both this week and have the car on jackstands to do it. The positive crank case hose part number is 06M-103-217-DD. I don't have a part number on hand for the oil separator hoses but there is a TSB out for both units. If you're still under warranty just take it to the dealer. Total for both parts came up to $144ish. The positive crankcase hose also requires turbo removal which is annoying.

Got it. I was going to do it myself but since it's under warranty and not just the PCV oil-separator itself I'll leave it to the dealer.

Do me a favor though I already ordered the oil-separator, can you take pics as you do it? I have a friend with a S5 who is out of warranty and he may be interested in a DIY.

I was going to but honestly it's super easy aside from the turbo removal. If you look at @BrockDM post on upgrading to a hybrid turbo, that will show you how to remove the turbo. The line install for the positive crankcase is just dropped in underneath. There's no wrong way to do it since it's one piece and lines up with the intake and inlet positions once installed.

Yeah, I was know the oil separator is super easy. Are the rest of the associated pipes a must change? I always thought it was just the PCV that went bad.

My understanding is that both parts, the breather/oil separator and the part number that I posted above contribute to a loss of pressure or in my case excessive pressure in the crankcase. Both have revisions. You can try just replacing the one part and see but at $75ish each, it made sense to just replace both for me.

XSWG, how did it go? I replaced the PCV (Oil separator) and it didn't resolve the issue. So I'm going to have Audi change the "Hose" 06M183217DD since it's a pain. Also the separator was a pain in the ass to pull off, lots of wiggling.

There may be a small flow 1.5mm diameter restrictor in the hose, page 22: https://procarmanuals.com/vag-ssp-65...-ea839-series/

Do you happen to have a link to the TSB? Or know where to find it. I'd like to have this done at the dealer since I'm under warranty. I haven't had any issues yet, though

Definitely have it done ASAP while under warranty. The PCV that goes under the turbo is a 4 hour job so it'll quickly get you up to $800ish USD for some reason the screen shots aren't uploading from the app so I added the file to Dropbox. It'll auto delete after 30 days from this post.

It's my lucky day because I just stumbled on this post. Had my car in twice for oil around the filler cap and an oil smell coming from the engine bay and the dealer just shrugs. Warranty is up in March.

Just make sure they replace both hoses. Some dealers will only replace the breather hose on the oil separator side. Both need to be replaced.

Do you have the TSB for the other hose? I'm trying to steer them to the solution lol. They're going to pull the turbo because they think it's a venturi issue since it doesn't occur under turbo load?

    Here's the estimate so far:

Called Audi with the TSB and asked them about it. My car is CPO so I asked if it was already replaced, they said no it wasn't and that they cannot replace the part unless it fails. When I asked them what to do if the part fails outside of warranty, the SA told me that I would need to take it up with AoA but that they would likely cover it since there is a TSB.

Anyone have another link to this TSB? It looks like the file is no longer available.

Was looking for this thread myself for the TSB number. I just grabbed it out of the URL, NHTSA hosts these too:

Does it seem like you sometimes have to bring up the TSB to the Audi dealer on some issues rather than them knowing about it and bringing it up? Seems like anything with a TSB would be something they see more than once or twice. I even had an issue that had a TSB and they initially wanted to charge me for the fix even though the TSB stated it was covered under the existing warranty. I really couldn't understand why they resisted covering it under the TSB. Kind of a frustrating experience and one I hadn't really had on my prior non-audi cars.

The way it was explained TSB's are not covered, but recalls are...It's a money saving thing. I had to fight with them to fix the buggy 360 degree camera software, a they gave me the TSB vs recall excuse.

The TSB specifically stated the fix was covered under factory warranty or cpo warranty. Hence why it was it was somewhat frustrating to be asked to pay for what Audi's own TSB says should be a covered repair. Like many TSB's from Audi they have this in them:
    Warranty
    Claim Type:
     110 up to 48 Months/50,000 Miles.
 G10 for CPO Covered Vehicles – Verify Owner.
 If the vehicle is outside any warranty, this Technical Service Bulletin is informational

I just saw this pop up in my feed this morning, Need4Built has a video on replacing the PCV Valve but they don't replace all the hoses.
