Steering Column Removal ? Steering lock/actuator replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello

I've been gone for awhile focusing on other things other than Audi's....I have recently starting trying to get my car finished when I ran into a issue of my car not starting no power just a warning on my cluster for steering lock failure.. after towing this shit all over and the dealer not helping me I have it back at home and plan to just do the swap myself and have Jack program it.

But I cannot find a single thread, video or any information for removal of the steering column as the electronic actuator lock is on top of the column. I found 1 video for an C6 A6 which doesn't help because its a different design.

I really would like to get my car started any information would be appreciated before i try to wing this. I can see most of the triple square bolts but I would rather have something to go by.

Any help is greatly appreciated TIA

If you want to work on your car its good to invest in some proper documentation. I recommend buying 24 hour subscription from audi/ erwin website and download pdfs

You definitely want the docs. For those tidbits like "♦ The electronic steering column lock can be replaced separately without having to remove the steering column."

erwin.audiusa.com, pay for a day, get all the PDFs for your VIN.

Basically, you're going to take the steering wheel off and the trim around the steering column off. But this is why you get all the manuals, not just the one you think you need (suspension/wheels/steering in this case), as you need the body interior one for the trim removal instructions.

The installation steps are more tedious; you're definitely going to want to be able to look those over.

Thanks for the info guys. I got the full set manuals now thanks to a kind user on here sharing them.

Smac, not sure where your reading the electronic lock can be replaced without removing the column its showing the column removal and by that I just mean dropping it down. I think I dont think it comes all the way out you just need access to the top of the column to pull the small module. Am I missing something?

I'm not sure I follow. There's no "removal" of the steering column in the normal sense of removing a component. Sure, I imagine you need to tilt it down to min angle, ok. That's not removal.

I thought you were saying the column didn't need to be removed at all to access the electronic lock..... the whole upper column has to be unbolted from the lower column, and dropped down to get that the electronic actuator/lock.

Ah, yeah, Audi playing on words there. It may not be "removed from vehicle", but you are undoing everything and loosening it from its secured installation. Basically everything except the actual removal from the vehicle.

It's a surprise the number of basic tasks on the 8K (B8 A4) which still don't have any youtube video at all on the operation.

Well I got this sent out to a place that repairs the steering lock and bcm2 and thry reprogram your keys and mail it back...

So I got installed which is pretty easy and straight forward to drop the column. The car started right up.

Unfortunately 3 hours later it failed the same way as it did the first time when I parked the car at the store and came out the security lockout for the steering lock was enabled and again no power no start except for the light on cluster steering lock defective.

The shop that did the repair told me that you need to leave the wheels straight if they are turned the car doesn't like it.
This seems ridiculous to me as I have ways parked my car with the wheels turned just to look good lol

I hate to redo this again and have this problem the repair wasn't cheap.

    Any insight is greatly appreciated

    Tia
