I've only used this feature a couple of times. It is definitely hardcore and the car hauls ass but my Audi-sense tells me if you racked up enough launches, you gonna have trouble with certain warranty claims (especially given what the manual has to say about this feature). I am 99.99999% certain there is a usage counter for launch control.

What does the manual say about it?

    Thanks

When accelerating using Launch Control, all
vehicle components are subject to heavy
loads. This can result in increased wear.

    @ Tips
After accelerating using the Launch Control,
the temperature of some vehicle components
may increase greatly. If that happens, the
function will not be available for a few minutes
to reduce the risk of damage. After a
cool-down period, Launch Control will be
    available again.

I, personally, do not plan on using launch control very often. Just my .02.

Does the car have to be in Manual for launch control to work?

Nope, can be in D. RS2 mode, brake pedal firmly depressed, gas pedal to floor, dash will indicate launch control mode is active. Let boost build a bit and release brake and off you go. Supposedly if you are in dynamic and sport modes you can also activate launch mode but I have not tested that scenario.

Yeah, never. I put a block of wood behind the pedal to stop it at 33% throttle. Thanks for commenting.

There used to be in other Audi's. My 2014 S4 was limited to 200 launches or so and then the feature just stopped working after launch number 200 (you can see the counter via the Vagcom). 3rd party DSG flashes from APR/Unitronic advertised to reset the limits though. On my 2016 TTS I never had any issues or hit any limits... Warranty claims were not denied (even with JB4 installed), one of the pumps on the haldex system was replaced as well as the DSG bevel box. I don't think you'll have any issues with warranty claims, but who knows...

Audi: “We added a launch control feature, but don’t use it. It’s only there as a reason to deny a warranty claim.”

    That makes zero sense.

Sure, it does put things under added stress, but so does a lot of other driving habits/conditions.

Like I mentioned before, the past 2 Audi's I've had have been launched hundreds upon hundreds of times with the additional stress of having the JB4 in an aggressive map as well. Zero issues with warranty. I highly doubt you will ever encounter a denied warranty claim on a bone stock RS6/7.

Actually, that is exactly what happened with the original R35 Nissan GTR. People used launch control and grenaded the transmission. Nissan refused to cover replacement of the transmission saying that using launch control voided the transmission.
