Definitive Roof Box Fitment Thread

As someone who is looking at roof boxes it can be hard to find pictures of specific boxes and fitment.

For example, Thule doesn't include a fitment in their configurator specifically for the SQ5 but they have the Q5 and have confirmed the fitment is identical. I mean, of course we know the roofs are identical but having Thule officially confirm it does help with warranty or fit issues.

I asked about fitment for my 2021 SQ5:

Thank you for contacting Thule. After confirming with a colleague, we have verified that the SQ5 and Q5 are the same vehicle fitment. Since you have crossbars already, you can use the factory installed bars in order to mount your box. Please use the attached document to measure if the XXL box will work for you.

Anyway, I thought it would be helpful we had a single thread where people can post what roof boxes they have and how they are attached (OE or aftermarket crossbars). If people could include the following 3 items it would be helpful:

The problem with the roof boxes is, at least with the larger ones, is that they are freight shipped. No one around here carries the Motion XT XXL and that’s another $100+ in shipping fees. Some do carry the XT XL and I we’re going to go with that one.

I was originally going to go with the XXL but even the freight aside I think it will look too goofy on the S/Q5 because it will overhang the windshield by almost a foot.

I just ordered a Thule Motion XL XT and I'll be using it with the OE crossbars.

I ordered from etrailers.com. Shipping is the killer when ordering these online and they sell for MSRP and do free freight shipping and it'll be here in a few weeks. My wife also found a 5% off coupon online which took care of almost all the sales tax.



Thule says it fits but I'll update this post and add myself to the OP when it comes in and I confirm.

Anyway, I see three owners here each having one. I know the Vector M is short, but not my much, and taller, again not by much. However, the Alpine is low profile and both look amazing. They both can fit my skis. I'm just concerned the Alpine with it being longer will overhang the windshield a bit more and be an issue. I haven't much info on the inno.

Love to get the thoughts from all owners here as well; hbnoodles with the Alpine and ADG05 with the M and jpanimator with the inno wedge.

IMO the vector is the perfect size and follows the roof line perfect. The alpine is nice because it’s a bit longer but there will be a bit more overhang on the windshield. The M in its current set up allows for full hatch opening and I still have my headlights turn on and off during the day because it’s covering the sensor. Here is a profile shot so you can see front to back a bit better

Thanks for the feedback. So when you say you have to turn on and off the headlights do you mean you can't leave the switch on Auto and must activate them manually?

Also, how's the wind noise and MPG hit if any?

Do you leave the Vector on all year or just use/install as needed for trips and such? I was thinking of leaving it on all year long, but it would cover the sunroof which I also leave the shade open all year since I got it tinted.

Here are two shots of the alpine. Definitely is a bit longer, but I like the slightly lower profile. Overall though, the M looks great too I don't think you can really go wrong.

I definitely took a little hit in MPG but nothing wild from what I was previously averaging. I also just drove about 1800 miles with the roof box on and the wind noise is minimal and nothing you can't get over with a little volume bump too.

Also - I do have full hatch opening ability. I honestly can't tell a difference though between my pictures and ADG05s...price is only $100 difference and I'd say go with whatever dimensions work best for what you need. Both look dope, good luck finding one though lol they're sold out everywhere.

Unfortunately no, it's as far forward as the box will go due to Audi's placement of the front crossbar. It's not like we have to duck under the lift gate but I wish Thule had mentioned that the rear gate would have to be set to a lower height.

It was last year's model apparently which appears to be replaced with a smaller capacity model. Picked up on 8/7/21 from the local dealer here.

Not too much. I did have to limit the open height a little but I’m only 5’ 6” so it’s not a big deal. I can stand under the open hatch just fine but I do have to watch out for the corners. It took me hitting my head twice to learn my lesson.

We put the dog’s stuff in there when we travel plus any of my crap like RC car and/or range stuff.

I don’t have any pictures of it loaded but I’ll try to remember to get you a few to give you an idea.

I guess it depends if possibly having to limit the hatch height a little a problem.

You’ll have to check with Jose_Escobedo if he had to limit the hatch height.

Why? The car is designed to do it. It’s for short people so they can reach the buttons when the hatch is open.

It’s a combination of the buttons in the lift gate. I don’t remember off-hand but it’s in your owner’s manual.

I always thought it was programmable due to low heights in garages, car parks etc but short people too I guess.

Once at the required height just press and hold the button on the tail gate until you hear the sound/lights flash. To set full open just push it up as far as it goes and press the button as above.

Anyways, I picked up the Thule Force XT Large last night. It looks and fits great, no need to adjust the hatch at all. Pics below. I am lowered on ABT HAS.
