Can someone explain the 48V system…

    Hello,

I’m waiting on allocation for the RS6. Meanwhile, I haven’t fully got my head around the 48V system. Does it control the suspension and driving - meaning - can it start off in electric mode? Can it turn off the engine and coast? What are the conditions that have to be met?

If there is a video or article someone has, please share.

    Thank you

It is not used to propel the car in any way. As far as I know it is used primarily for the auto start/stop system to make it smoother. There has been some speculation that it can help drive the turbo boost (to eliminate lag) but I think that is not the case in this engine.

I started on a thread on this not long ago. In NA cars all it basically does is assist with the stop/start function. Pretty much a paperweight. https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...tem-in-NA-Cars

The 48V system also keeps the AC running when the engine is stopped. Many cars with start\stop will have the fans\radio still operational, but the AC compressor would have stopped along with the engine.

    Thanks for that.

So basically useless (especially if you have ASS turned off permanantly), weighs 10kg, more things to go wrong, expensive to fix.

I would have thought that audi would at least use the 48v to operate air suspension - especially in something like active body control. Does anyone remember the A8 commercial where the car quickly raises one side (using the suspension) when detecting side impact? Is that the 48v system or just reseve tanks dumping air?

I do not believe that is the case in the RS6. I recall reading Audi plans to do it eventually, but it is currently not on the RS6.

Active roll-bar systems generally utilize the 48 volt systems in other brands, so I would expect that soon also.
