Audi Extended warranty costs check and advice

    Hi there,

    My CPO just expired.
I've 2017 S7 with 36,000 miles on it. Stock with no issues. Never track it. Previous owner maintained it well at dealer (executive lease) and launched it only once.
    I'm putting roughly 8,000 miles/yr.

    Dealer quoted me the following:
*3yrs or 36k miles engine and transaxle: $4,300
*3yrs or 36k miles bumper to bumper: $6,000

Are those prices reasonable and would you go for it in my position?

Anything else to consider here? I live in CT, which is a CARB state I believe, which I hope turbos would be covered then up to 7yrs, so till late 2023 in my case. Is that correct?

I'll have to check mine but I bought my 2017 A7 CPO last year from Audi of Manhattan and bought 3 years for around 4k.

Might be because I have an A7 versus an S though.

I would shop around. I've purchased extended warranties for several vehicles (not Audi) and you can often find a dealer somewhere in the country that will sell the same coverage at a discounted price. I have not been on Audi forums that long, but I am somewhat surprised such a dealer has not been identified.

Some would never drive/own a car without some kind of warranty; others prefer to self-fund their warranty, so to speak, by holding cash aside in the event they need to repair something. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.

Considering the current state of your car, the low miles, the documentation of care from the previous owner, and the fact that you don't drive it much and never beat on it, no, I would not go for it. I'd sooner save that cash (and potentially more) to pay for any issues outright.

The good news is that if you experience no issues, you're not out any cash at all. Yes, it's a gamble, but I'd rather gamble that a good, clean, well-maintained car not needing huge repair expenses vs buying the warranty and effectively hoping I have a failure so I get my money's worth out of it.

In the R8 world, everyone talks about Audi of Indianapolis for buying extended warranties. I believe the POC name is Heather in their Finance dept.

This exactly…take that 6k and put it in a short term investment that you can access the cash when needed. Even at a low return rate, you’ll be better off “self-funding”.

There is a reason extended warranties are a huge business…and its not because its good for the vehicle owners.

I’ll take every manufacturer warranty given with everything I buy, but would never pay for a warranty beyond that.

I used to think like that, but after having a significant mechanical failure with a BMW to the tune of 12k and I didn't have the extended warranty, I've always option an extended warranty from then on.

Others might be lucky and never get a failure, but when it happens, you'll wish you got one.

I'm glad I got one for this Audi because I finally diagnosed that clunking noise I heard on the right front where my dealer kept insisting everything was fine for the last 3 months. It's a failed engine mount that's not tripping any codes, and has been busted for at least 3k miles now. Just the repair on that as well as the future repairs for the wear and tear that's caused on the front right driveshafts and mechanicals will almost certainly cost more than the extended warranty I bought.

Another possible consideration is that most folk here would encourage you to get a Stage 1 ECU tune and maybe a TCU tune, even if you don't track the car. While unlikely, a third-party warranty might have an issue with that depending on the problem. Many folk here report the ability to achieve high odometer mileage by following good maintenance procedures. For my CPO, I'm doing as A665 suggests and "self funding" the warranty while following maintenance suggestions from the knowledgeable AZ folk here. As A665 implies, the decision in large part depends on your level of risk-tolerance.

It's not a "right or wrong" answer. Your tolerance for risk dropped after your BMW experience. I'm more than three years out from the end of my CPO, so the extended warranty would have ended without ever being used. Instead, I have the $6,000 premium in my pocket, not the insurance company's. Different folk will have different considerations and reach different conclusions, correct for them.

Totally agree. It’s whatever their level of risk tolerance is.

I’ve just had bad luck with a few cars, so my risk tolerance for it is extremely low now haha.

I opted for the CarMax care plan and it wasn't badly priced. I think I paid 23XX for 4 years or 75k of coverage that I can take it anywhere. I've already had 4k in driver-side suspension parts replaced and they didn't make it painful. I chose the dealer since they had loaner cars for me and the repair was around 1 week of downtime. When shopping for my S7, I asked the local dealer for extended coverage cost and that almost killed the S7 for me. Audi's price was around 9k last year and that is ridiculous!!

Fidelity has been around this Audi community as the go-to extended warranty provider for a while. I reached out to Troy when I got my quote, even though I decided not to go with it. Still expensive, but he does have the power to give some discounts. Contact info below - hope it’s still valid.
