    Exclamation HELP! Weird ticking noise

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone!

I have a 2013 B8.5 Audi S4. I recently noticed a weird ticking noise coming from the engine, I don’t know if it’s normal or not so I’d appreciate your guys’ help on this. Car runs and drives great, no issues.

Here’s the link to the sound of the engine:

Or is this normal considering that this is a direct injection engine? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I noticed mine doing the exact same thing yesterday during my weekly start and idle (sitting for the winter) it goes away with revving, so I’m leaning towards high pressure fuel pump piston. My car runs and drives perfectly too.

Sound clip is very brief. See if you can better locate the sound. Our engines do have a normal "ticking" sound from the direct injection high pressure fuel pump. Might be that. The pump is on the passenger front side of the engine for those of us in the US. That is the left or air intake side when facing the engine from the front of the car. That would be the lower left hand corner in the video clip.

If it is more generalized on both banks, tbe fuel injectors also make ticking sounds.

If its coming from the back of the engine at the firewall, that could be timing chain noise. That is normal for a few seconds at start up, but should not be continuous.

Exactly! It goes away if I rev the car! Thanks for the reply!

Thank you so much for your reply! I’m gonna listen to it more carefully and try to get a better video of it. It doesn’t tick while revving the engine, but it does sound like it’s coming from the passenger side.

Better location info would really help. Don't put any weight on higher engine rpm. Just focus on exact location at idle.

After further diagnosis, the sound is actually coming from the top of the back side of the engine, which I believe is the chain tensioners/timing chain in general. I booked an appointment at the dealer to have it looked at by the mechanic. Thanks for all the help!

Was there an update to this situation at all?
