p2187 too lean in bank 1
    p2279 intake vaccum leak

    hey

these two codes have been coming up last few times i’ve tried to clear them after cleaning then replacing the Map sensor to no avail. i have no idle issues and no noticeable power loss, so i thought it may be a sensor issue. i have the updated pcv valve as the original one failed 4-5 years ago. this part probably has 100k miles on it, is there a chance it’s failing ever so slightly again? i don’t hear any whistle coming from it and i don’t hear a whistle coming from anywhere else. i am going to pop the cap off tomorrow to see if the diaphragm is still in good shape, but just wanted to see what the techies thought in the forum

    thanks

    UPDATE
examined the pcv diaphragm this morning know noticeable damage to itand still no whistle sound from anywhere maybe intake manifold leaking somewhere or hopefully a hose

    More correctly:

P2187 - system too lean at idle
P2279 - Intake air system leak

So you have some leak where the IM vacuum at idle is sucking in excess air. First thing I'd do is block off the port from the PCV to the IM, isolate any block sources of leakage like PCV, front timing cover, rear main seal, etc. If your trim at idle corrects, you know you're looking at a block side source of leakage. If it doesn't, you're looking at sources of air that do not come back to the IM via the PCV path. The IM itself, anything along the intake path from the MAF to through the throttle body.

The PCV has 100K miles on it??? I replace mine every 40-50K miles. Do you know a bad PCV can take out your RMS? Trying to stretch a PCV can easily turn in to a multi thousand dollar repair......

Exact same 2 codes plus a few random misfires. I had recently replaced the PCV. Then had an injector go bad. Replaced all the injectors, cleaned valve ports and reassembled. Car would at least “run” after that but was not able to get it to stop idling rough and continuing to throw the same codes.

    And then….

For unknown reasons I popped the top off the PCV valve to look for maybe a bad diaphragm. I didn’t notice the spring which flew out and under the car. I put it back together without the spring and all of the sudden it purrs. No rough idle, no codes. However, under load at around 20 mph makes a loud “popping” sound. So back to the garage. Found the spring on the ground. Put it back in the PCV valve and back came all the rough idling and same codes. Took the spring back and again the engine runs great at idle and throws no codes.

So I’m on to something but not sure entirely what. I’ve ordered a new “OE” version of the PCV and will see how that works - especially under load. Definitely something that is related to how this particular spring works inside the valve. Maybe different models use different springs of different stiffness. More to follow but a very strange and completely accidental find.

The final fix. Bought a brand new German made PCV. Now the car runs perfectly. So note to all those being frustrated by misfires and air leak issues. If you have already replaced the PCV, REPLACE IT AGAIN WITH A GERMAN MADE OE PART. This problem plagued me for a month as I had just replaced the PCV with one from O’Reillys. But in the end iit really did just boil down to that part.
