Worth paying over sticker for 22 RS5?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Any thoughts/insight if its worth it and the car will hold its value? All dealers im speaking with want at least $10k over.

Would love to hear if anyone has recently bought or is looking to buy.

    Thanks

How can anyone answer that for you? It's a personal choice that only you can make. No it won't retain it's value to offset paying over msrp. Find a different dealer that won't charge you over msrp or walk. Unless you are comfortable with spending say 10% more for a car?

You could buy one or two real Audis for 10k over msrp on a B9.

You will lose value buying over MSRP. Nothing special about this car to justify a markup and there are plenty for sale at MSRP

I'm just going by what I see on cars.com, they show MSRP but I guess that doesnt show if they are doing markup. Anyways I would never buy with mark up, things will get back to normal soon and you will never get that extra $10k back

Not worth it in my opinion. I know we are in different times now, but this is the same car that they were offering 20%+ off on a little over a year ago with 0% financing . . . . So that lets you know what the market thought of it in pre-pandemic pricing, likely where it will head again once things settle.

I have one and love it, but no way I would pay over MSRP for it. I cant think of many cars I would pay over MSRP for, but some (like 911s, etc) you can at least hedge against the bottom falling out based on historically high resale value.

What about if ordering? I don't think you see markups then? Glad I ordered a new Huracan Evo last May, got it for MSRP minus a small discount. The ones dealers have on their lots are up to $50k over

I didn't get a mark up on my order. In fact I paid $2k under msrp (in this market that's not bad).

You can pre order the car on Audis website , print off the quote and bring it too the dealer that’s the MSRP . Now apply sales promotions from the manufacturer and dealer . Paying over MSRP is buying into another covid supply chain crisis scam . I would buy into this and I didn’t.

Again this is the dealers deciding to do this, not Audi. And tons of other manufacturer dealers are doing the exact same.

It can also be your particular market. Maybe your part of FL is getting this kind of mark-up. Just for the heck of it, call a dealership in GA or TN and see what they say.

Worth paying over sticker for 22 RS5?

Yeah this is a definite no on the markup. 99.99% of the cars that exist on the market are not worth paying over MSRP and it’s illegal in some markets. Stealerships use tactics like driving the car and registering it as a used vehicle so they can charge whatever price they want. At least this has been the case here in Toronto.

Generally speaking that 0.01% chance is worth it in rare cases like the 6MT murcielago. Mind you it’s only selling over its original MSRP because it’s seen as a collectible vehicle. The whole concept of markup is a scam. Personally I believe no car is so good where the dealership can insist on a markup. Especially when there are plenty of manufacturers that offer great options. Chevrolet Z06/ ZL1, Nissan GTR(AWD) , Mercedes C63s, Charger hellcat, etc. I’m sure you can find a replacement.

While I love the RS5 I will go ahead and say if my dealer asked me to pay a markup I may never have gotten into an Audi. Generally speaking it a practice dealerships should avoid as it looks bad on the brand. But it’s obviously a perpetuated lie they can get away with because some people fall for the slime-ball dealership tactics. What can you do though other than spend your money elsewhere ;)

Goodluck with your purchase. I would just shop out of state since it’s super easy to do so in the USA.

Your best bet is to find a dealer willing to order one without a markup and get your price signed by the dealer. Most of the rs cars showing at port / factory are spoken for. Dealer inventory is sparse, they're marking up everything like q5s

And if it's being leased, would be really interesting to see what the residual value would get set to? How is the used market going to feel about any big pricing jump between successive years?

The dealership I got my car from Flemington Audi in NJ will never sell a new car above MSRP. Its the policy of all of their dealerships. If you call in ask for John, and tell him Alex sent you.

Many dealerships are doing this across all brands. Certainly not all though. Mine is a '21 I got in October, but I paid MSRP.

What they're doing is capitalizing on the low inventory. For people who want their car RIGHT NOW, they're willing to pay over MSRP. And let's all be honest here, goods are worth what people are willing to pay. If you need a car immediately, now is not a good time to be in that market.

If you're willing to wait, then there's options out there. But just understand what goes along with the wait; probably 6 months AT LEAST for a factory order... Or you can get "lucky" and find a new car on a lot going for MSRP. Or buy used; there's not enough difference in the B9 vs B9.5 to justify a markup by any means...

In any case, it's only worth it if you just have to have your car right now, and you're planning on keeping it for a long time. Then that's a personal decision. But if you're already worried about holding value, you're flushing money down the toilet.

A friend of mine needed a car now but didn't want to pay over MSRP. He bought an in stock base Corolla for a little under MSRP and ordered a RS5. He figures he'll be able to sell the Corolla for close to what he paid for it when the RS5 arrives in 6 - 8 months.

I'd be happy as hell going from a Corolla to a RS5, going to feel like night and day.

The flip side to this is if you are trading in a vehicle. I recently purchased a 2022 and traded in my 2018 Chevy Silverado and got more on trade in than I paid for it three (3) years ago brand new.

Agreed, it does work out if you can find a new car you want at MSRP. That's exactly why I'm in an RS5 right now; I traded a 991.2 Carrera S in a near-perfect spec, and got a higher value trade-in than what I paid for it about a year prior. I can honestly say I drove a 911 around for a year and MADE MONEY (well, aside from the $3k I spent on plugs and tires...).

Anyway, I hope to try to do it again in a few months with this RS5 when the 992 GTS I'm waiting for arrives...

Markups out here in California are out of control - Sac area wants $30k ADM over MSRP for RS5s that are "still in the port"

I haven't seen a single dealer in the bay area less than $10k ADM.

I still have an order in which hopefully the dealer will eventually honor @ MSRP (per our verbal agreement). Problem is, I placed the order on Nov 5th and it's still waitlisted.

Oh well - might end up buying used just to avoid this BS.

Used cars aren't much better. They're going for as much or more than new cars. Myself and several other members here have been offered thousands more than we paid for our cars by dealers. I can only imagine what they're planning on selling them for.

A buddy of mine just sent me a link of an exact duplicate of my '19 RS5 SB listed for $83k with 15k miles..... I did a quick search and noticed any 19 RS5 SB with under 20k miles (mine has 12k) was listed at 77k or more..... all those numbers are way over what I paid for mine new 2.5 years ago. This market is crazy. We are just now seeing the government finally admit to the inflation we have been seeing for at least a year plus. IMO we are going into a steep inflationary period where things like new cars will be going up in price a good amount every year. Where this will all lead is hard to say, but if you look back to the late 70s and early 80s for the last time we had inflation this high, you will see everything went up in price every year new, and resale values held pretty well in the short term. We may see a five year period where prices continue to surge on goods. If that follows what happened in history, your over msrp purchase might not be a complete fail. Logic says once the supply issues get better, things may get better. But the latest chatter on that suggest another 6-8 months before that will happen. So in conclusion, buying over msrp is always a bad idea. But in this market there may be reasons to accept it.
