    Oil? In Turbo Inlet Pipe

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    2018 Audi S3 with 50k miles

Looking for some help here. There's some buildup and what looks almost like oil? in my turbo inlet pipe. I'm using a Racingline catch can and PCV. I empty it regularly and my oil levels are normal. Is this normal to see in a TIP? If not, what could it be and what should I do?

Photo is from 2 weeks of buildup. I had cleaned it just prior to an oil change, when I first noticed the issue. 20211210_223239.jpg

Does your car have any other symptoms, like smoking out of the exhaust? It's normal to have some oil in the intake tract even with a catch can since there will naturally be some oil seepage past the turbo seals (and it could be a little oil condensed after being pulled through PCV / catch can).

    100% NORMAL!

See the black tube connected to the TIP? Thats where the oil fumes from the PVC/Oil seperator/Catch cans gets sucked into the intake for the engine to burn them.

Maybe your catch can setup is not "catching" enough of these oil fumes?

    Stock factory air box/intake?

What happens when the diverter/blow-off valve releases pressurized turbo intake charge pressure...it dumps it back into then turbo compressor inlet housing....this sudden blast of air blows
what you see oil fumes back out of the tip...normal.

Under boost...the oil fumes hose connected to the TIP is under maximum vacuum and pulling oil fumes from the engine.

Audi revised newer 2022 E888 motors to have a better oil fumes system and less of what your seeing...

No other symptoms. I am running an iE intake kit as well.

The racingline catch can is supposed to be the best in the business, so I'm concerned considering how much I'm seeing.

I guess that's what surprises/concerns me. I wouldn't be as worried if I didn't have a catch can system installed. The racingline catch can is considered the best on the market so I'm wondering why I'm seeing so much. I also don't recall standing liquid before I installed the catch can either.

I have an integrated engineering intake kit.

I had racingline...switched over to APR...

Do you have a picture of your catch can setup?

Do you remember how the racingline oil baffle plate is installed?

No sure how the Racingline catch can is baffled....the tanks seals/welded up so you cannot see their tank baffle system...

    APR catch can is baffled...

    Photo attached.

Baffle is at a 45 deg angle in the pcv system. I can't see inside the catch can. I've had the catch can for 10k miles. It picked up a good bit of stuff when I would empty it (monthly), but it's not sucking oil. Oil levels remained nominal throughout the 10k miles. (I checked, I was paranoid).

not alarming at all, yeah some stuff is likely to get past the plate and can. Especially when you switched to the aftermarket PCV plate, in which now all PCV fumes are pushed out to the TIP (vs stock, which is a 2 way system and the system really only vents out the TIP at high load/WOT).

I didnt like the hose going thru the coils...also didnt like the fact no easy drain valve was provided...until now...

I get allot less oil in the TIP with the APR over the Racingline...

Ok thanks. That's the answer I was looking for. Trying to keep the car in prime condition and I'm paranoid about potential damage to other parts. Intercooler and charge pipes go on today. Downpipe goes in once I figure on the tune. There may be a new/hybrid turbo in the future. Brakes come first, however.

It's a pain to get the hose through the coils, but it does look cleaner. I understand that decision.

I just checked mine due to smoke because of kinked oil return line and there was not a drop in my intake tube nothing.
