Update after roughly 100 days of ownership:
Still works great! Again, important detail I only use CarPlay while connected by wire - charges my phone at the same time, and minimize the opportunity for lagg - so I can't speak to the wireless experience.
I was experiencing two minor inconveniences:
1. if running Spotify/audio through my phone and I put the car into reverse, the backup cam would turn on fine, but the audio would cut out and then would struggle to get back to it once I got out of reverse. Struggle being, the music would take a moment to come back on, and when it did, it would skip forwards to catch up to where it would have been had it played without interruption. Not only that, the touch functions would be laggy as well.
2. the system would take at least two tries to successfully connect to my phone. The sequence that I found that worked with an almost perfect success rate was to open the CarPlay application, close it out (i.e. swipe up on a recently used app, like on iOS), re-open the application, and then plug my phone in. Not the most convenient, but it worked.
I called 4x4 to address both issues, they were very responsive, sent me the software update file within the hour. Download onto a USB, plug the USB into the port on the CarPlay unit, hit 'Update? Yes' and after just under 10 minutes it was complete, and both issues have been resolved.
Still haven't tried mirrorlink, video in motion, etc because that hasn't been important to me yet, but with a few trips planned for the summer I may give it a try (instead of the iPad-propped-up-on-the-dashboard option)
