    2G MMI, with Carplay

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    It works!

This is a Carplay retrofit unit for my 2G MMI from:

    https://4x4shop.ca/product/2005-2011...sb-multimedia/

Came with the screen, supporting bracket, and wiring harness.

I primarily purchased this headunit for Carplay and have only used it for that at this point, though I'll be exploring the video projection and mirror-link abilities as well. I would recommend using the wired connection.

I was very patient/slow with my install, this is a rough sketch of how it went:

    https://youtu.be/YZ9R6k_aa_0

I'm happy with it! Good sized screen (later than OEM) that sits a little closer to the driver, touchscreen capability, and still retains OG MMI control (that interface is still accessible).

Let me know if you have any questions!

So you basically installed Android tablet, that can do CarPlay, right? The MMI is virtualized, correct? How does the radio work? Does it have good reception?

It uses the car's Bluetooth, so works fine.

If you're using carplay when a call comes in, it shows up in carplay. If you're on the 2g screen, it shows up on the 2g screen (as per usual Bluetooth connection).

all right, that is great news, so a few questions coming up:

    - which exact combo did you get, as there are so many options, and I came up to over $1000CAD, which Im not spending.
    - is that 10" or 12" version?
    - can I do okay with just basic package? (what did you get)
    - does it work with factory backup camera which I have on the car
    - does this support data SIM card, so I can throw one in and use this as standalone, without my phone being connected to it at all
    - same for parking sensors
    - my factory bluetooth is not working, but have a bluetooth adapter (Mr12Volt) connected to CD changer, which works okayish, microphone is terrible though, so I pretty much rather use Speakerphone
    - do they send dash trim need for install
    - do you need to cut and tap into wiring, or everything comes with connectors?

How lond it took to get it from making an order?

    - which exact combo did you get, as there are so many options, and I came up to over $1000CAD, which Im not spending. I got the 10.25", no extra aux, Qualcomm, no extra mic, no dash cam recorder, no rear entertainment system, yes aux input cable, no obd2, no GPS splitter, no USB hub, no USB extension, no tool kit, yes 20min support (didn't use it, just pick up the phone and call them if you need help, they were super useful), no live install guidance - just over $700 all in
    - is that 10" or 12" version?*10.25"
    - can I do okay with just basic package? (what did you get)*I ordered MTK, it was taking too long so I amended my order for Qualcomm instead
    - does it work with factory backup camera which I have on the car*yes
    - does this support data SIM card, so I can throw one in and use this as standalone, without my phone being connected to it at all*I'm not sure, give them a call
    - same for parking sensors*I don't have any on my car
    - my factory bluetooth is not working, but have a bluetooth adapter (Mr12Volt) connected to CD changer, which works okayish, microphone is terrible though, so I pretty much rather use Speakerphone*I only use factory Bluetooth for phone calls (still retains use of CarPlay if you want it to), I believe you can order a separate speaker if your factory doesn't work
    - do they send dash trim need for install*yes, the bracket that supports the screen is included (the black rectangular frame in the video - top left - at :30)
    - do you need to cut and tap into wiring, or everything comes with connectors?*no cutting or tapping or wiring! It's all a bunch of connectors
-*How lond it took to get it from making an order?*order received 10/04, order delivered 11/02 #globalsupplychaincrisis

And I just realised that the shop is located half hour drive from me. Will definitely look into it.

Update after roughly 100 days of ownership:

Still works great! Again, important detail I only use CarPlay while connected by wire - charges my phone at the same time, and minimize the opportunity for lagg - so I can't speak to the wireless experience.

I was experiencing two minor inconveniences:

    1. if running Spotify/audio through my phone and I put the car into reverse, the backup cam would turn on fine, but the audio would cut out and then would struggle to get back to it once I got out of reverse. Struggle being, the music would take a moment to come back on, and when it did, it would skip forwards to catch up to where it would have been had it played without interruption. Not only that, the touch functions would be laggy as well.
    2. the system would take at least two tries to successfully connect to my phone. The sequence that I found that worked with an almost perfect success rate was to open the CarPlay application, close it out (i.e. swipe up on a recently used app, like on iOS), re-open the application, and then plug my phone in. Not the most convenient, but it worked.

I called 4x4 to address both issues, they were very responsive, sent me the software update file within the hour. Download onto a USB, plug the USB into the port on the CarPlay unit, hit 'Update? Yes' and after just under 10 minutes it was complete, and both issues have been resolved.

Still haven't tried mirrorlink, video in motion, etc because that hasn't been important to me yet, but with a few trips planned for the summer I may give it a try (instead of the iPad-propped-up-on-the-dashboard option)
