    Greasing up caliper guide/slide pins..

I’m looking to remove and grease up my front caliper guide pins.. any clear instructions on this not to damage the pin/boot? From my research they seem to be a one piece boot?

Either way, for some reason my front passenger brake pad rubs unevenly on the rotor when depressing the pedal at low speeds. Causing an uneven contact sound during each wheel rotation. Especially, when the brakes are cold, but goes away when warmed up or on warmer days(?).. I initially heard this issue on my factory pads in spring, so I know that my replacement Akebonos aren’t the issue.

I also don’t believe that it’s the rotors, since the issue wasn’t noticeable during the warm summer months and doesn’t seem apparent on warm days at this time either. Kinda odd.

Nothing appears to be damaged. I am in Cali, so no rust of any kind, but anything below 60 degrees and the sound is noticeable when slowly pressing on the brake pedal a low speeds.

Either way, I’d like to see if anyone could walk me through removing the boots and pins properly.

I am not sure if the B8S4 has similar brakes as the C7A6. But I simply pushed the pin out with my finger and cleaned the old dried grease with a clean paper towel and some brake cleaner. I then lathered them up with that high temp green brake caliper pin lube and slid them back in place.

This might sound stupid, but when I did my front pads and rotors I don’t remember the calipers having traditional slide pins. There were just two 13mm bolts holding the caliper together. Maybe I just screwed up but I remember the bolts being totally dry.

Thank you. I assume the pin slides out and the boot is a one piece like I’ve seen pictured in ECS?

You’re correct on the 13mm bolts. The pins appear separate, unlike most where the bolt/pin is a one piece, which gets greased before screwing back in.

That makes sense. Thought I was going crazy for a minute there.

This is the old guide pins part: https://parts.audiusa.com/p/48597666/8K0698470B.html But the B is disco now and the current C is the same but doesn't include the grease.

The boot ends sit into the grooves; otherwise they just slide out. I had one that was rough sliding, bit of emery cloth and smooth sliding again.

Make sure to use a rubber safe grease. I use 3M silicone paste 08946. Sil-glyde is another common. Don't lube the bolt or the inside of the pin. Just the outside of the pin, which is then covered by the boot.

But I think next time, I'm going to install these pins: https://www.tyrolsport.com/braking/t...tiffening-kit/

Awesome, thank you for the info. I’ll look into it tomorrow or the day after and hopefully that this fixes it. Hoping it’s not the actual caliper piston that gets stuck. Just weird that it fixes itself and the noise once warmed up.

I recently did my front brakes. Along with popping out the guide pins and cleaning / regreasing them, i found that the round guide studs the pads ride on on the caliper bracket were extremely gunked up. I thoroughyly cleaned those along with the pin maintenance and a notchy feel I would get in the brake pedal at times completely disappeared.
