    Most comfortable tire?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello everyone,

I have a 2017 B8.5 SQ5 with 20 inch wheels and I live in Boston (snow, rainy etc). I also run Bilstein B8 & H&R lowering springs. My Continental DWS06 are running low on tread and I need a new solution.

My main priority now is comfort, as the suspension + Contis were not so comfortable. I'd also like an all season solution and am currently looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+. Are these more comfortable than the Contis? Has anyone tried the new DWS06 PLUS?

    Any other suggestions welcomed! Thanks

I have AS3+ on my 2017 A4 and they are stiffer than the DWS06+ that I previously had on it.

Interesting. Is there a reason you swapped the DWS06 Plus? I notice they came out Jan 2021, so they must have had significant tread left.

    100% agree with buddy.

I had AS4 and they were firmer than the dws06.

Dw06 felt mushy comparatively, I much prefer the as3/as4

Can you clarify? Squishy as in more comfortable over bumps? Isn't that desirable to be more comfortable? And when you say firmer do you mean better handling? Sorry just trying to understand the adjectives used haha

    Thanks

In August construction debris took out both right tires at the same time. The 2 new tires would have had to be shaved to match the wear on the lefts, so I just decided to replace all with the Michelin's. Great tires overall, but definitely feel stiffer.

The michelins have a stiffer sidewall. When running at a comparable psi the michelins will be less comfortable. The DWS by conti is already one of the most comfortable tire options in my experience. I used to have them on my A8 and purchased them again for my ridgeline daily driver. Perhaps try lowering your PSI depending on what you're running now, or downsizing to a smaller wheel to gain some sidewall. However I think those are the only options where you may gain comfort over what you already have. Changing out the active components of your suspension will always make the biggest differences in ride quality.

Same problem with my 2020 Q5 after putting on H&R sport springs. After much searching installed Goodyear Comfort Assurance tires. Also lowered 2 psi. Have my ride back & very quiet. Goodyear"s are 20" all season.

the conti's feel like crap once they get to low tread level in my recent experience. Just got the new version of the dws 06's and the comfort is much better than the previous model dws-06 or at least it feels that way since coming from the worn dws's

Btw consider 265/45 instead of the 255/45 oem for a bit taller sidewall and Cush. I am running 265 dws06 and 255 pirellis on my oem set and the upsized dws06 are more comfortable:

ooh I'll look into those. How do they run for performance dry, snow and rain? Thanks!

I'm currently running 265/45/20, should've mentioned that earlier. is 265 the max for the 20s?

I’m running the Conti DWS 06 plus on my Q5 TDI with 20” x10 wheels et25. The tire is 275/40/20. Very comfortable in NYC suburbs and a daily driver into Manhattan. I do agree they get noisy when they wear down. But great tire all around.

DWS06 is a pretty good tire all around and comfortable in my opinion. At the end of the day your running a 20" wheel with a relatively low profile tire for an SUV so ride quality is going to be a bit rough.

Just came here to confirm the AS3+ assessment above. They are stiff. I switched from the OEM Bridgestone 20" summer tires that came in the car. Their sidewalls are even stiffer than those summer tires! To be clear, the AS3+ tires are fantastic all-season tires. But, if you are seeking a comfortable ride, look elsewhere.

All the Z rated ultra high performance tires are going to have stiff sidewalls.

If comfort is a high priority, you might need to look into touring tires.

The Conti CrossContact LX25 all-season high performance touring tire looks promising. Excellent review on Tire Rack. Looks like you'd have to run the slightly taller 265/45/20 (they don't offer a 255), but that's not enough dufference to matter on stock suspension and wheels. Speedometer error would only be 1 mph at highway speeds.

We recently bought Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus II XL 235/55R-19 (stock size) from TireRack for our 2014 Q5 Premium Plus.
These were highly rated, well priced and in stock. Although we’ve only driven a few thousand miles we’ve been very pleased with the smooth ride, high speed performance and wet handling.

sort of off subject. I would consider using tirebuyer as well as tirerack. I have noticed with tirebuyer I can usually get great honey coupons which always ends up cheaper than tirerack this is not an advertisement I swear just trying to save my homies some $$ haha

After trying quite a few different tires (Conti DWS and DWS 06, Cross contact LX, Yokohama Avid, Goodyear Eagle, Hankook Ventus, General, Pirelli Scorpion P Zero) the latest tire that I have tried is brand new Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 that came out last year and I think it is the quietest and most comfortable tire I’ve had. I’ve took multiple long trims on different tires and Michelin was the best out of all. Also side wall on it is stiffer than DWS but softer than Goodyear. It’s like the perfect medium.

after 80k miles on 2 sets of dws06 i decided to give the vredestein quatrac pro a try - also 255/45/20. i find them to be quieter than the dws06, but that's not saying much as the dws06 were loud to me. i upgraded my suspension to the H&R/bilstein combo like you did when i swapped tires, so i can't speak about the difference in feel between the 2 tires. i find the ride pretty harsh with my setup. one thing i must say about the dws06 is that they're pretty incredible in the snow and rain. i drove thru a couple feet of fresh/unplowed powder in them once in tahoe and they gripped way better than i expected. i haven't taken the vredsteins on snow yet, but the folks at 034 tell me they're popular among allroad and Q5 folks.

This is good to hear, I've been running the Michelin AS4 since spring 2021. I like them but sometimes wonder if there's a quieter tire. I guess the DWS06 isn't it, and as mentioned above, touring tires may be what I should look at if I really want something more comfortable. Ride comfort is otherwise great, no noticeable different from the Conti CrossContact LX that came with my stock 20s even after lowering with KW Street Comfort.

That said, I'll be switching to 285/40 or 295/40 next year and Michelin doesn't make the AS4 in those sizes at the moment.
