CAR WONT START AFTER JUMPING IT .... HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So i will try to keep this short and thorough.

I just bought a 2013 S6 from someone who was claiming that the car was running well until their Battery died over night. He went to jump it...using his diesel truck.. and the car would no longer crank after that. Upon inspection, I noticed that when you get into the car, all the interior powers on with one push of the button, then you go to press the brake and hit the start button and the nothing happens, no noises and the car just shuts off.. MMI screen retracts and ignition is powered off as if you didnt have the brake held down and were just trying to turn off the car normally. it Doesn't try to crank or anything. No check engine light on, but I did notice on the Instrument panel screen was kinda freaking out cycling through 2 messages, one of the messages says that if the car was not in park, it can roll, and the other I believe was that the door was open. The messages would not cycle through normally (usually stay visible for 2 -3 seconds) they were flashing through so quick that i almost couldn't read them. When you have the ignition on and press the brake, it doesn't let you shift through the gears to get it into neutral. I was able to access the shift override and was able to get it into neutral, but still wouldn't start.

Has anyone every experienced anything similar or can you point me to the right direction?

My first thoughts are maybe the main battery fuse ( next to the positive battery terminal) blew when jumping the car or maybe there is an issue with the brake itself?

Did you jump directly from the battery terminals?

Have you checked the battery? You could need a new battery. I just had to replace mine since mine completely died and it was making the car do some wacko shit.
The car wouldn't even crank, my brake pedal was locked flat on the floor and initially would only enter accessory mode. As soon as I dropped in a new battery everything reset to normal.

He did jump it straight from the battery.

That does sound pretty much like my issue... I haven't picked it up just yet I paid him a deposit, waiting on him to get the title to pick it up.

I can't say that I tried since I couldn't even get the car on, but with the brake pedal locked on the floor and the rest of the car shut down I can't imagine that the shifter would move.

You could have him test the battery for you and see if he can get a reading (either himself with a tool or at a parts shop). I brought my car to O'Reilly's before the battery even died (I could still start the car, it was just struggling) and it was so weak they couldn't get a reading on it.

Does he have documentation of the battery ever being replaced?

With these cars you're supposed to jump from the terminals under the hood, it's possible some damage was done to the electronics, I would try to scan for codes if possible using a VAG COM tool

Thanks I really appreciate your responses, I will dive into the battery first. There is no indication that the battery has been replaced. It was a oem Audi battery when I looked, no visible sticker.

Of course, the whole battery fiasco just happened 2 weeks ago so it's fresh in the brain lol.
It sounds like it's time to be replaced then! Mine's a 2015 A6 and my battery had never been replaced so it was time.

From your initial post it does sound like possibly the brake interlock switch is not working.
It may just be called "brake lamp switch" but I believe it serves multiple functions, down by the brake pedal.
Or brake pedal position sensor G100
Both are fused together with a 5A fuse on carrier 3 -ST3-,red, LHD through 2014 (Left side dash)
    Position #3
I suppose you could check if the brake lights work first...if they don't then look at that fuse, and worst case something else got fried during the jump.

Edit: Or possible the transmission selector position sensor is malfunctioning too. As mentioned a VCDS scan would help.

Audi roadside tried that on my car once with an emergency starter pack, didn't work at all. He had to go to the trunk and connect it directly to the battery for it to jump the car.

First check the existing battery and replace if bad. A low battery may trigger many codes so a scan may be misleading until a bad battery is replaced. If the battery is fine (unlikely) then scan for codes and go from there.

Diesel trucks tend to be 24v systems, two 12v batteries. Depending on how he jumped from his truck he fed the S6 with 12 or 24 volts. If he fed it with 24v then get your money back as he likely fried a good portion of the S6 electronics

Is it just a simple battery swap or do you need to do any additional things prior or after install?

I read somewhere that at the battery there is a fuse that is for safety encase you are in an accident the jump start might have blown the fuse.

The pyro fuse wouldn’t stop the car accessories from still working, it’s meant to disable certain things like fuel and other stuff that should cut off after an accident.

Audi has a battery management system intended to extend the life of a new battery. After installing the new battery, the system needs to be programmed via VCDS or equivalent. There are AZ threads that describe the procedure; it's not critical but strongly encouraged.

Clever! Described in AZ thread "Battery pyro-fuse theory of operation" in Q5/B8 forum. Apparently supposed to be triggered when airbags deploy.

The accessories would still work. My theory is if the jump went bad that maybe it set off the fuse, however, it seems that if that were the case I would hear a click from the starter still.

My starter was clicking when the battery still had some power in it, and when I was trying to jump it, it wouldn't get enough power to turn over but would still click. Once the battery completely died, it wasn't even clicking. So still might just be the battery

Yeah I am hoping that will be the solution. I'm just trying to see other recommendations just in case it isn't the solution.

Not trying to be an a hole here, but instead of going back and forth on suggestions, why don't you just go buy a battery charger for 30 dollars, charge it overnight and see if itl start. At lease that way you can start making progress on eliminating factors.
