In my opinion, no. I've seen a lot of different vehicles in my time, with correct alignment specs, good rotation habits, and STILL get some weird wear habits.
When it pertains to non-directional tires, the rotation pattern I listed above allows each tire to hit all 4 corners over the coarse of its life on the road. Keep that pattern, and rotate/rebalance every 5k miles, you are bound to get the maximum mileage life out of the tires. For those that have mixed sizes front-rear, and they choose directional tires, they are in the worst situation (besides those that go with RFT tires).
For us, we have to eliminate all possibilities of liability on our part, and we don't get much wiggle room. If your vehicle calls for a specific speed/load rated tire, we have to meet or exceed that. If you choose to go up/down in tire size, there is only certain percentage we are allowed to work with, above/below the OEM recommended size. ANY signs of mechanical failure on the vehicles condition, or lack of proper rotation intervals, voids any and all manufacture warranties.
THATS the hardest thing for alot of people to get over.
