Exclamation 2017 A6 Premium Plus Quattro 2.0T APR Stage 1

    Hello Fellow Audi Lovers!

This is my first day on this forum and I made an account because I felt I could not find a clear answer on a C7 A6 Tune for the 2.0 TFSI. I just recently got it done via APR and I want to give my thoughts and welcome questions. This is also just for the Stage 1. I don't think I will get a Stage 2 and don't know if one even exists for the 2.0. I am not big on spending for mods, just wanted more power.

Background: I got my 2017 A6 used in 2019. Yes...I heard the 3.0 is the way to go. I did not test drive one and still have not to this day. I had regrets for some time, but at the time my car was 2 years old with 18k miles for half the MSRP and pretty much full loaded for the premium plus. The 3.0s I was seeing had higher mileage and/or were another year older yet about $5k above my car, so decided against it. I wanted the 2017 specifically as well because I wanted Apple Carplay.

After a couple years and many more miles of driving (almost at 60k miles now), while I love my car, I did always wonder if I missed out on power. I think the 2.0 engine is smooth, but can feel annoyingly light and underwhelming sometimes. So I looked into tuning it, and not knowing a thing about mods, APR was the way I chose. My particular one in APR's database is technically labeled C7.5 since 2016-2018 is a "facelift" generation. My dealer charged $499 for the tune and a $125 flash fee. My thoughts:

    1. Holy cow, this is what an Audi should feel like, even at the entry level. The increased torque at 3000 rpm and the pull from 3000-5000 put a smile on my face. I guess I could say I wish I had it done earlier, but not by too much...personally don't feel like its worth the risk of voiding warranty.

    2. Gas mileage...meh. But I think my sample size is small. First tank with the tune, of course I'm going to have fun. Combo of city and highway driving with perhaps more spirit than usual, I averaged 22 mpg. I'll edit after I track a few more tanks.

    3. Turbo Lag...it's here to stay guys. The engine is tuned, but it is still a turbocharged engine. That has been one of my annoyances with getting the 2.0, but I also realize I'm not one to go 0-60 from a hard stop at every signal light. Stroll a bit, hit the gas and the tune will make you forget the lag.

    4. I am so happy with this decision. My car has faced some bad luck (minor accidents, cracked windshield, recently replaced water pump ). I was tired of paying for BS, it felt good to finally pay for some true fun. Sure, I don't have a 3.0, but I sure feel closer in power now. The car lags less, pulls heavier, and the performance feels like what you expect from a German car.

I hope this helps those who want to boost up their 2.0 TFSI A6 without feeling like they have to pony up money for a different car. I am very happy with the result

Thanks for the feedback... I have a 2016 2.0 Premium Plus (for many of the same reasons you mentioned) and have been casually exploring the APR tune but didn't know if it would be worth it or not. Would love an update in a few weeks.

I have always been curious as to how the car would feel. My buddy has a B9 A4 with Stage 1 APR and I drove it the other day. My problem is my only comparison is my Stage two 3.0T DP with HX and TCU tune, so his car feels.... different...

Welcome and thanks for the info. I can another perspective, but only on the drivetrain.

I have an A5 Sportback B8.5 2.0L Quattro which is tuned and modded. I'm quite happy with it as it overcomes a lot of the factory compromises esp. the driveability. Many of your A6 compromises are also present. Lag was a pain, but greatly improved. The DSG 7-speed is the main culprit now, oh how a clutch pedal would fix getting off the line quickly. Keeping it in sports mode around town keeps the engine rpm on the boost curve so torque is always available.

I have the following done and it makes the car far more engaging and I highly recommend for others with the 2.0L valve lift motor:
    1. K&N flat panel replacement air filter.
    2. High flow cat, 100 cell metal cat. Stock exhaust otherwise, factory quiet. No cops.
    3. Very large Wagner intercooler. Hot out in Australia so important. Keeps ignition optimised, doesn't retard.
    4. GFB diverter valve replacement. Helps prevent boost leakage over factory item.
    5. Catch can. Keeps ignition timing optimised as less fouled air gets into the intake.
    6. ECU and TCU tune. REVO. Does mid 13s quarter mile times. Pretty good for a heavy car and only 2.0L. 1810kgs.

Driveability - Holds the gears longer in Drive to stay on torque. Factory changes up way too soon. Fuel economy about 10-12% better than stock when cruising. TCU improved the torque vectoring, much better through corners.
The tune is very conservative too. Might get a custom map one day, but stock rods are the limiting factor. A K04 upgrade would also be an excellent choice for more driveability and more power.
