Anyone install Aftermarket (i.e. Aliexpress) Android Auto/Carplay unit for MMI Q5s?

I've seen a few youtube videos of a relatively straight forward retrofit that still maintains all of the MMI capabilities but adds android auto and a bigger screen. Saw this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCR2XLtENzM

Wondering if anyone has put one of these in and if so, where's the spot to buy them? I see this same platform/tablet being sold across a ton of resellers so looking for the source or potentially the best deal with all of the cables/hardware.

There are a ton of posts about the RSNav and a few other brands as well. Overall people have success with a few bugs here and there. RSNav is the best and he did all of the work/engineering that everyone else just copied as cheaply as they could.

This. Love my RSnav using wireless carplay works amazing.

I installed a CarPlay integration box from Amazon. Carlin kit is from China. It utilizes the factory screen and mmi/ami system.

I use wireless CarPlay with my iPhone.



it’s not touchscreen, but I can use updated navigation, stream music, utilize Siri and make calls, but I haven’t figured out video mirroring for YouTube.

If you are looking for better SQ, go with a head unit replacement.

There are US/UK Vendors like RSNAV with available support and detailed install instructions. I think they sell the touch screen kits too.

Knowing for roughly the same money a 10in+ touch screen display is available I might as well go that direction if I'm going to have to pull things apart in the same fashion anyways. I'll zero in on the supplier (local or aliexpress) I want and go from there.

Having stock back-up camera and stock nav will help keep my costs down I hope, and really I just want touch screen because MMI is a little challenging to get used to.

You can use navigation from your phone with the systems that has CarPlay/androidAuto with the 10” touchscreen.

I have the RSNav stand-alone unit in my Q5, it uses the stock screen and adds AA and Carplay (wireless also). No real complaints, works well and their support is great if needed.

They also have a version that replaces the screen.

Its a youtube diy. They all appear to be about the same when it comes to wiring across different brands. It took me alittle over an hour to get it installed and all buttoned up. Then another 30 mins getting acclimated to the user interface.

Yeah I did receive that as well. I didnt install it. My guess is that its a speaker or microphone for some sort of voice command. Whatever it is, I didnt find it necessary.

If you message the seller, they could clear it up. They were very responsive when I asked a question regarding the wireless carplay.

I was gonna go this route, but I felt that the space was too small/tight and far away/deep for my hands to properly use it when driving or in general. Glad I went with the 10" yours still looks nice

Well you have to find out what kind of screen it has. because I've installed android navigation to my father's mb and when the weather is cold the screen gets all lined up. Vertical lines across the whole screen.
I see that you are in Toronto, so the weather there during the winter is pretty cold and that might affect the screen.

I’m making this for the new device that gets you wireless CarPlay and android auto for the OEM 10.25 inch screen, everything works as it should including steering wheel controls and going from reverse cam to CarPlay automatically. Audio sound the same as Bluetooth only gripe I have with this unit is you have to hold menu for 3 secs every time you turn on your car.

you can find it on amazon or carlinkitcarplay, I went with carlinkitcarplay since it’s a lower price than Amazon.

what's everyone's preference between the OEM size screen (in the knockoff ones), the RSNav larger 8.8" screen and the larger 12.3" tablet style?

Debating buying one. I had a cheap one in my S4 that I removed (selling it soon) but I wouldn't mind trying out rsnav

I have to agree. The 12” was just too awkwardly large so I went with the 10.25”

I am thinking about buying an MMI box soon in the future, but my phone is not the latest. so I will have to use wired android Auto. Which is the best location to put the USBs so they are easily accessible ?

Any of these have a good oem looking antiglare screen? Alot of photos online have glare which makes these units look like cheap aftermarket units.

after seeing this i got the Carlinkit option on Amazon. Everything works except the audio (lady reding out the directions) on Apple maps. After doing some interwebz searching it seems that this is a common issue with all kinds of different CarPlay systems/cars. I have tried all the "fixes" i could find, no luck. At first the music would pause when it was direction speaking time, but no voice, after restarting the unit now it doesn't even do that. any ideas??

The unit can be a little buggy, sometimes i need to double press my volume/mute button to get the sound to start on the unit. Undecided if i am going to keep it at the moment, well see how it goes, i would really like the maps app to work fully.

The S4 system isn't out yet. The first batch should be delivered by the end of June is what they are hoping but we will see if they meet that delivery date. From everything I have read, everyone seems to like it. There are a few people with minor issues here and there but RSNav tries to help fix the issue. Their screens are already touch screen and had wireless android auto and wireless carplay already. In certain parts of the world, I guess connection can be spotty so they implemented wired android auto and carplay also.

If you're on Facebook, you can join the RSNAV group and the support team is pretty quick to respond and help. They're pretty busy right now though with e-mail backlogs due to the S4 pre-order.
