    Water Pump Replacenemt

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Had my car at the dealer for an oil change today (they had a $19.95 oil change special - can't even buy the oil for that price!). While they were doing their multipoint inspection, they noticed a coolant leak from the water pump. Has anyone posted instructions on how to do this? Dealer wants ~$1200 to do the job and I'm sure it can't be that difficult. Also, what other items should I be looking at when replacing the water pump?

    Thanks in advance.

Coolant drained, bumper removed, front radiator support put in the service position (Top radiator Coolant pipe disconnected as well as Hood latch sensor, AC low coolant sensor, Homelink, etc...
What kind of oil did they use for that price? That would be my most important question.

My water pump replacement cost me around 4K.

Of course it was accompanied by a complete heads rebuild when I bent a valve.

$4k is overpriced on a 3.0t. Dealer here wanted $4k to do my AC compressor on my RS5 which is 4hrs labor more than doing a S5 waterpump per ETKA. On the RS5 you have to remove the waterpump to get the compressor out, how do I know, I'm doing it right now. Actually I've replaced the compressor and getting ready to bolt on a new Waterpump/Thermostat housing (a while you're in there thing but it's $500). On the 3.0t I could replace the Waterpump in probably about 5~6 hours, taking my time to do a quality job. It's halfway up the front of the engine, the RS5 waterpump is at the bottom left hand side and difficult to get at all of the hoses.
Carrnuttt, I'll bet your quote included the Thermostat? The Thermostat is separate on the 3.0t and under the Supercharger which is additional labor in removing/reinstalling the Supercharger. I did my '13 S5 Waterpump when I installed a 57.1mm Supercharger pulley and a Fluidampr Crankshaft pulley. Waterpump was fine at the time but it was another 'while you're in there things". Haven't had my Supercharger off yet but if I do Injectors and/or Injectors Seals, PCV, Thermostat, etc... I will do all of those at once. And there is a cheap plastic vent pipe from the bottom of the Supercharger to the intake manifold that should be replaced, not just new O-rings on either end but do the plastic pipe too.

My last comment was tongue-in-cheek. Like I mentioned, the heads on my car was rebuilt with new valves because I bent my old valves due to an overrev. The water pump was just a side thing because my buddy that did the work noticed that the gaskets looked worn. Most of the expense was for the heads. So I have basically new heads on my car right now. And yes, the thermostat was replaced as well since we were in there.

It was at an Audi dealership. They used the Audi specified oil. They are looking to get people in to try to get them to trade in/up. Even though I wasn't due for an oil change (9 months and about 3 or 4k miles since the last change), I couldn't pass up that deal.

Found a Youtube video of the process. I'll study that for a couple of weeks then get to it.

Go to an Indy shop. I had mine replaced for $400.00, FCP euro lifetime part.

Checked with one indy shop around here. Was quoted the same price as what Audi wanted. FCP kit for this is nearly $300. Did they provide the part and do the work for $400 or was that just labor?

That’s strange. I paid $166 for water pump and $350 for install at Indy shop. Dropped car off and picked up 6 hours later, taking into account for engine cooling down. That shop must be quoting COVID price increases.

Also, if you do it yourself, replace the bolt 6 or 7 small bolts holding it on. I think the '15 on models had the later waterpumps which were less prone to leakage so make sure the dealer is correct.
