SQ5 Brakes - Rotor and Pads replacement !!! Necessary to change out rotors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Recently had my 2019 SQ5 in for 40K service at audi and recommendation was to replace both front AND rear rotors and pads. Pads have 2mm rear, 4mm front (no sensors have been tripped yet). Neither have been yet changed on this car (lots of freeway driving).

Trying to figure out what to do - and if it's necessary to be changing BOTH FRONT AND REAR ROTORS out as well at 40K. What have you done ? Dealer wants $2500+ for entire swap.

    Thanks guys!!

The rotors on our cars typically need to be changed as part of the brake service. I recommend looking for a local independent Audi mechanic for the brakes. I received a similar quote on my 2018 SQ5, ended up getting the rears changed for $500 including rotors and the indy shop using OEM parts. Fronts are quoted at $600 ish, and the shop recommends that i drive until the sensor is tripped before servicing.

If your brakes aren’t thumping due to warping theoretically you can change just the pads. In reality what ends up happening unless you have access to a brake lathe you can cut the rusty lips off you will end up with thumping brakes in 10K or 15K miles or less. At which point you can buy all and start over.
If you can change out the parts yourself it costs hundreds not thousands. Get Zimmermann rotors, FCP Euro now has them.

I drove with the brake light (pads) warning in mmi for like 5 months before i ever heard any metal on metal type sounds. If no mmi message wait till that pops up to change. Especially if they are selling you pads and rotors at 40k miles Resized_20201210_122050.jpg

I try to keep an eye on pad thickness so I can reuse the sensor usually with out even disconnecting it.

Threads like this make me glad I do my own maintenance. I would end up paying one fourth of that quote.

What size are the fronts Eric? They don't list the front one as available for our SQ5. The only have the rear on their website.

You have to email them directly. They are oem size if/when available.

I think dealer service departments push brake jobs because it’s an easy sell “OMG my brakes are worn out” for a lot of people.
I wait until sensor turns on and always replace rotors, pads and sensors when doing the brake job.

I just bought 2018 w/28k on it rear needed replace, but not the front dealer wanted $888 rotor and pads….I went ahead and got R1 format and rear w/their ceramic pads for under $600 and then had em installed at local shop for $200….so I still paid less than only the rears form dealer….total rip off

Stevens Track days on YouTube has a video for front and another for rear. He even lists all tools and torque specs. It’s for B9 S4 but SQ5 is the exact same. I just did mine with R1 rotors and pads and saved $560 in labor.

While on the topic of brakes, my new to me 2019 SQ5 requires a surprising amount of leg effort to stop and the pedal is quite hard. I wish there was more initial bite Could it be the pads are just glazed or rusty? Based on low mileage, every component should be stock. Car sat at the dealer for a long time.

I have a 18 SQ5 and the brake pedal is firm to push but the initial bite of the pads is strong and stopping power very linear all the way to complete stop.
At 46K now and have replaced rear rotors and pads with Brembo rotors and current Rev OEM pads.

Do you need to replace the clips when changing the brake pads?

SQ5 Brakes - Rotor and Pads replacement !!! Necessary to change out rotors?

Fcpeuro, lifetime parts replacement. Just buy them once and your subsequent sets are reimbursed after returning the used brakes.

My rears went at around 25k, fronts are still going strong at 28k. Not sure why my rears wear faster though.

I used a mobile brake service by me. Quoted about $200 in parts and $250 in labor. Insurance reimbursed for my rotors since I have mechanical breakdown insurance.

I have a hard brake pedal in the morning now, so I probably have the check valve issue. But does this reduce the power assistance in general when driving? I still find the brakes pretty weak, even when applying some serious leg effort. Certainly the braking doesn't feel consistent with the huge calipers.
