    S6 - P0706 - Range Sensor (F125): Implausible Signal

My project S I picked up a couple months back has a big drivability issue with this TCU code. Car slams into reverse violently which puts the trans in limp mode. Quickly reset by turning the car off and on again but having to do this each time I pull out of the garage is troublesome.

Anyway, I’ve picked up a new transmission range sensor and finally had a look underneath the car to see where it’s at.

I didn’t grab any pictures but it’s nestled very close to the driver side mounting bracket and downpipe.

For those that have replaced this sensor, what all did you have to remove?

I’m thinking the driver side trans mount and bracket; hoping to work around the downpipe if at all possible.

I’ll get some pictures added when I can.

It’s a pain in the ass. I had to change mine out on my 03 allroad recently. I had to take off the drivers side downpipe heat shield, drop the front subframe a bit, and remove the transmission mount and mount bracket bolted to the side of the trans. There is very little space to work, and any thin ratchets or short Allen keys you have to squeeze in there will help tremendously. I think I had to go from the top to get the very top Allen bolt for the trans bracket iirc. It took me a solid 3-4 hours working on the ground to replace it. Tore my arm up to pieces from the tight space. If you have smaller arms/hands, it can be a little easier

I had to do this on my S6 a few months ago. Dropping the drivers side down pipe and trans mount makes it doable but I will agree it is a pain and a solid 3-4 hours if done on your back in the drive way. Dropping the Dow pipe wasn’t to difficult as we have a larger trans tunnel than the Allroad’s. Good luck.

Appreciate the replies. I was back under the car this weekend and can see why the downpipe has to come out. This isn’t my daily so I will be slowly pecking away at it.

Might tackle a bad outer CV joint and drop the driver axle while I’m right there.

Closing the loop for anyone who stumbles upon this thread in the future.

I chipped away at this and a number of other issues with the car over the last few months and did indeed pull the driver side downpipe and the driver side trans bracket. I also had the front driver side axle out for a CV repair which really opened things up.

One issue I ran into was the wire harness on the sensor I bought was shorter than the original one. Had to reroute part of the harness to make it work. I bought a $40 replacement off eBay, YMMV.
