Ultra high performance all season tire recommendation?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi everyone,
My 2019 A5 sportback Prestige tires are on their last leg (Contisport OE tires). I want to switch to UHP all season or touring. I want them to be extremely quiet but as good at dry handling performance as my OE tires. I’ve read so many recommendations for Michelin pilots but I don’t want only a sport performance tire (ie: one that wears out in 15,000 miles). Recommendations welcome. Thanks,

    Mike

I have used the Michelin as3+ in the past and now running the as4 on my new 21 S5. I love these tires

Based on my second set of Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ (on two different vehicles) I'd get the new Pilot Sport AS 4 over anything else.

Currently run Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Fantastic grip and tire. Two tires have >20k miles while the other two are ~30k miles. Still plenty of tread and zero wet concerns. Light snow this winter was A-OK.

These provided so much more grip over the tires the car came with (Toyo Proxes 4 plus) that I lost ~3 mpg. Never looked back though

I'd say if down south Michelin A/s4 and if in the north Continental DSW 06+ as the DSW are better in the snow

I currently have the Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires (a little noisy), but maybe next time I will look into the Pilot Sport All-Season 4 tires.

It looks like this is a new model announced last year: https://michelinmedia.com/pages/blog...ticle/c0/a990/

"Michelin Releases Pilot Sport All-Season 4...July 1, 2020 — Michelin has released its latest ultra-high-performance all-season tire — the MICHELIN® Pilot® Sport All-Season 4. The tire is designed to provide year-round performance and give drivers ultimate control in any moment, in any season."

PS4S is definitely not an all season tire. It is a ultra-performance summer tire.

Depends on the snow. I was using the older as3+ for several years here in NJ. Never had any issues up to about 5" of snow. I'm hoping the new as4 I have on are even more confidence inspiring.

Had them this past winter with no issues at all. Can't say I drove thru any blizzards but handled 2-3 inches of snow without issue. Live in Pittsburgh.

On my S4 I have the Michelin Alpines for winter which is a performance snow tire, their awesome but def. not an all season. I run the PS4S in the summer.

I mean, if you're driving on anything frozen I'd highly recommend winter specific tires. We get really heavy, slushy snow here in NJ so it's easier to plow through.

I went with Nokian Hakkapelitta R3's, but only because I got them used, otherwise I'd get Michelin. Some of my friends here run studded, it gets that bad.

Yeah, I drove a rental in Colorado many years ago in a snow storm. It was literally the only time in my 30 years of driving I was actually petrified.

I run both the AS3+ and DWS 06 Plus frequently. The Michelin provides a bit better dry traction and the Conti is for sure better in the snow. Both are great UHP A/S tires. I have the AS4 on my new SQ5, but have yet to take delivery.

I would imagine the AS4 is the quieter tire.

Yes, the as4 is really quiet. I didn't really have any noise issues with my as3+ but the as4 are as quiet as the summers the car came with.

Could be the dynamics of the vehicle. The Subaru could have a longer wheelbase contributing to the better stability.

You couldn't be more right about the "dry traction". Remember when I smacked that curb with the PS4S's on last year? 18K worth of damage took away all my confidence in those tires when it's rainy.

There's a good winter tire characteristics comparison done by engineering explained that compares the channels and treads and describes what they actually do in the snow based on how they're designed. Look it up

Thanks everyone. I ended up getting the Pilot A/S 4 tires. I love them! Drove an 8 hour trip last weekend and could not believe how quiet they were and super responsive. Thanks again for the recommendations!
