    Battery Replacement 2014 Audi A5

    Hi,

I'm in Canada, the dealer quoted me 305$ plus tax for a replacement battery and 180$ plus tax for installation and coding. I am now looking at replacing the battery myself. I have replaced batteries on other vehicles but never on ones that needed to be "coded". I read though the various battery replacement threads but wanted some clarification on the replacement.

    What I know:
    • The battery needs to be coded, I do not have a vagcom but will probably get myself an Ancel VD700 scanner. Feel free to suggest a less expensive scanner for the job.
    • The new battery should be of equal or greater CCA and Ah.

    What I don't know.
    • I am not sure if I have an AGM battery. When searching for a battery on Costco\Canadian Tire websites, all models compatible with my car seem to have less Ah and come in various sizes.
    • The size of my battery (95R\H9\H8, etc)
    • Can I interchange AGM and non-AGM batteries ? I assume that it would have to be coded accordingly, though the Ah seem to be different between same sized batteries.
    • Will I lose any settings on my car ? Radio code, convenience key, etc when I remove the old battery ? Do I need a battery maintainer ?

I have included a pic of my battery and BEM code for reference.

    Thanks.

You are PR code J0Z, H9 aka group 95R, flooded (not AGM).
I do not know an H9 AGM (PR J0P) part number that the J533 will accept, based on the feedback from another recent thread.
So either get an H9 wet flooded (PR J0Z) or get an H8 AGM (PR J0B). For J0B, you can update the adaptation to part number 4F0 915 105 E. H8 (group 49) AGM will have the same CCA but less Ah. An AGM for a given size is always more CCA and less Ah vs the wet flooded.

If you get something less than Ross-Tech VCDS, make sure it can perform the battery adaptation task on an Audi 8K chassis (8K = B8 A4).
No, you don't need any battery charger for the process. I don't lose any settings. I do recommend resetting the date/time after attaching the new battery before doing the adaptation update.

Thanks. That cleared it up. Even though it was possible like you mentioned, parts manager suggesting not changing battery type. I ended up getting a H9 wet flooded (PR J0Z) from the dealer, cost difference between OE and aftermarket was minimal. New battery has a BEM code sticker so coding should be easy. I would like to get the Ross-Tech VCDS, but difficult to find in Canada and is more expensive. The Ancel VD700 I was planning on getting can perform the battery adaptation task (confirmed with Youtube videos).

Unless your old battery was totally shot and the car was running in power saving mode, you really don't need to code the new battery to the car. It obviously can't hurt if you do code it, but you'll be fine if you don't code it as long as the car wasn't in power saving mode.

I have a 2013 A5 with the flooded battery. I replaced it without recoding with VCDS about 3 years ago. It's at 106K miles and the car has never given me any issues.

When I got my new battery at walmart, my old battery was still OK, so it was a quick swap. No settings were lost.
