Recall 66CJ - Driver Front Airbag Inflator

I'm pretty amazed they sent this out for a 20 year old car.

It says the fix is not expected until mid-October. I hope they're able to reproduce an airbag that is styled correct...otherwise not sure if I will bother.

I’m in Europe and have 69CJ recall for my 2000 S4. I booked the time to the dealer on September. I understood that only the inflator is changed and this is part of the Takata airbag recall affecting many car manufacturers.

I'd really throw them for a loop if I brought in my car that has an aftermarket OMP racing wheel installed... My Takata flew out of the car!

I got this the other day too, so it’s for airbag in steering wheel?

Interesting. The Audi of America letter says we won't get parts until at least October. Please update us when you get the service done, I'm curious about the replacement they provide. My mom had a recall done on her VW years ago for Driver's seat heaters and they replaced her existing leather seat with one made of a cheaper (synthetic) material. In hindsight, she would have actually not done the recall had we known they were going to put in that seat.

LOL Honestly though I would bet that a good 25% of people receiving these letters have modified their steering wheels in some way.

Yes I believe just the center replaceable part of the steering wheel.

    Be warned!

Heard a guy in Australia dropped off his B5, they wouldn't give it back and totaled it as had no replacement. Yeah no thanks.

By Federal law, any manufacturer has to let you know about any safety related recalls. The recall is a couple years old at this point

Audi USA cannot take a car because of a recall, that's not how things work here.

Yes, it is for the steering wheel inflator

So my car is on the recall list. I call my local dealer who confirms and then says there is no fix yet from Audi. wtf? He says the recall came out on 2/6/2020 and they have no new information. He suggested I call Audi USA for more info.

I call Audi USA and they too confirm my vehicle is on the recall list. They go on to read me the recall letter where they (Audi) says the "fix" should be issued within 12 month (2/6/2021). I remind the representative that it's 8/24/2021 and they are a bit late. I just hear excuse after excuse about "Be patient", "We're working on it", "Once we know, we will let you know..." etc The lady finally said that Audi should have addressed this already but there is nothing she can do and I should call back in a few months.

Again, by law (because of the Takata mess years back), any safety related recall has to be disclosed to the owner of the car as soon as the issue is known. Parts availability becomes an entirely separate thing, and in the current day and age, with supply chain delays across all areas, I would not look for them to be available anytime soon, as it is not something within their control at all. They are at the mercy of the suppliers, and in the airbag world, there are essentially 2 of those total. This is an ongoing issue, across many brands and millions upon millions of cars.

By law, they also have to inform owners when the parts become available. That is handled via a separate letter to the last known registrant(s).

Yep, got it. Double got it. My issue is that Audi is NOT saying "Oh yea, the air bags need to be replaced and once they are available, we will start scheduling customers for their recall replacements." Which would suck, but we all get it.

What the Audi rep said is, "Audi is still investigating the issue and they have not yet come up with a repair. Check back later." This is very different than a supply chain issue.

But who knows, maybe this lady didn't know what she was talking about.

My wife just handed me 3 of the notices that arrived in the mail today. I also received that agitated sideways (B5 WTF) glance I know so well. It would be of comfort to know the bags functions properly.

In the past 4 years I've been in 2 accidents that were bad enough to deployed the air bags and total the cars. Each time the airbags deployed without fail. I just checked and both cars were also on the recall list.

    3rd times the charm!

Sorry about your wrecked cars. Glad to know they will likely deploy. Thanks

Audi must be SWIMMING in recalls.
I recently sold my 2001 S4 Avant (got the recall notice anyways lol), and picked up a 2015 [8V] A3. The 8V platform has an open recall for PODS (Passenger Occupant Detection System): https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...led-In-The-U-S
This one is even worse because Audi doesn't even have a fix for it, let alone parts. My wife has been in the passenger seat when the PODS has gone haywire. I just told her I'd try not to crash...

Both the steering wheel and dash airbags deployed no problem when I crashed my 2001 A4 almost 3 years ago. Those airbags ought to be 100% the same as B5 S3.

Mine was smashed pretty good in the front driver corner and I had no air bags deployed.....which I was ecstatic about.

Understandable, it's a lot less work to fix when they don't deploy! Is/was the airbag light illuminated and/or are there fault codes present for the airbag module?
