    Hi all

Starter no longer engaging after going through a deep puddle.
Car car be push started and runs fine all day long.
I've searched in vain for the location and part numbers so I could pull and check the relay.
I gave up and called my Audi dealer.
Even they had no clue which one it was despite using my VIN.

Does anyone know which relay under the dash is the correct one?
Or what the correct part number is.
I'm fairly certain my starter is toast but want to be sure before I order one.

    Thanks in advance.

I think that switch is the Clutch pedal switch, but is referred to as "Locking Relay for Starter"

However there are two separate relays for the starter behind the drivers knee bolster. Those should be the main Starter relays.

Ah right, What I said is for the clutch switch interlock. Not the actual relay.

Can water even get to those relays?

The ones by the drivers knee, probably not, but the ones in the plenum yea for sure. So it's possible that it's the clutch switch that's underwater. That would still stop the car from starting if the ECU doesn't see the clutch pedal depressed.

I can't speak for the B6 S4's, but I know the B7 RS4's are known for starter motor issues. I just replaced mine last week. Common issue for sure, but not sure if that extends to the S4 or not. Either way, its a good idea to check all these relays first as they are easier/cheaper to address.

    Thanks guys
    Interesting.
I had absolutely no issues with the starter before the massive downpour.
I just checked and the depress clutch message is not disappearing when I push the clutch in.
I don't remember if it ever did though.
Sadly I will have to work on it in the rain to get at it.

Im pretty sure mine was the same way. The depress clutch message was always there. I found mine was worse when it was damp or cold. It would be brutal to try and start. From what I've read its the starter solenoid circuit that wears and it becomes harder and harder to engage especially if it's cold/wet. Mine would cause an intermittent no crank. Once it was warm it seemed fine for the day, but if it sat for too long it could be a pain. New starter made a world of difference.

    Good luck.

The dealer gave me part number 4H09521253A for relay number 4.
I just happens to be in stock.
Before I go pick it up, I have one question.
According to the diagram above, relay 4 looks to have two functions.
It looks like it's a starter relay and a break booster relay.
    Am I reading that correctly?
If so, and my brakes work fine, would that mean the relay is fine as well?

    Thanks again

The footnote next to the relays read like this

-J53 Starter Relay - For Engine code AUK, BKH and BNS Only

-J569 Brake Booster Relay - Not applicable for engine code AUK and BKH through 2005 model year.

I'm pretty sure the engine code for your V8 is BBK, so I'm not too sure to be honest. I'm pretty sure the way the relay box is set up is you either have one or the other. I don't think the relay would control both the starter and the brake booster. That's the way I read it anyway.

    Thanks again all.
I fully expect it to be the starter but I picked up the starter interrupt relay just in case.
Heading out now to throw it in.
I hope to find some water under that rain tray.
If not, the new starter goes in Thursday.
Not looking forward to that though.

If you don't see it under the rain tray it doesn't necessarily mean your ECU box is dry.

Good luck and I look forward to hearing the result.

    Ugh!
Took the inside apart, pulled the relays, opened the new bag and notice the relay pins were a touch smaller.
    Investigated.
They sold me 30 amp relay.
Fortunately I didn't plug it in and try to start it.
The correct part number has no A at the end and is 50 or 70 amps depending on who makes it.
    Another work day lost. :(

Our yards here don't have much.
We don't really have the population to generate decent yards.
Most stuff gets brought in from Ontario when you call the yards to order something.
    The rain stopped finally.
I tried the the starter relay and no surprise that it wasn't the issue.
Headed out to remove the clutch pedal interrupter switch/relay under the tray.
The dealer was useless in looking up the part number for that relay as well.

If the clutch switch, relay is bad and you don't have a relay handy, A short bit of wire and 2 blade connectors to jump the connection. (basically what I have since I am swapped from Auto to Manual)

Pulled it. Not sure how to check it. I like the jumper mod anyway. :) Sadly I'm

Diamonds, Hearts, Clubs? Still should have 39 cards to play You can check the relay by putting a 12V signal across the magneto, listen for it to engage and then check continuity across the switch

Here is the part number of a spare relay. I am to far from you to help but here is the OEM and an aftermarket part number.

As for testing it. If you can put power across pins 1 and 2 (the opposite little guys) you should hear/feel the relay actuate.

Sadly I just tried the jumper mod and still no crank. Looks like it's the starter.

It's interesting that the depress clutch to start message is there despite the jumper mod.

Mine was always there with a relay or jumper. didn't matter. I am not even sure if the message goes away or not.

Well it was the starter. Although the starter gave me no signs it was about to go, what a difference in cranking speed with the new one.

Was a pain in the ass but it's fixed. Parking on hills to get by was irritating.
