Max tire and wheel size without rubbing

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all -

I just ordered my 2022 S5 Sportback and it should arrive in December. Considering it comes with summer tires, I want to order a set of winter tires before I take delivery and have them swapped right away.

What I want to know is:

--What is the smallest wheel diameter that I can get without hitting the calipers? 18"?
--What is the max tire size you can get without rubbing issues? I know stock is 265/30/20 on the black optics package (right?) but I'd imagine you can get a smidge bigger if needed.

Trying to put as much rubber between the road and my wheels for the winter (potholes where I live) and then I'll get a more aggressive setup for summer.

    Thanks!

No experience yet but I'm expecting my 22 S5 sometime in November. I also got the black optics package and plan to swap the summer tires to 275/30 all seasons. Everything I've read leads me to believe this will work.

Yes, Im running 275/30/20 Michelin AS4 on my 21 S5 coupe. Only issue I had were the little fender plastic pieces I had to trim down. Other than that no issues.

I believe we spoke via email this morning, but yep, BBS has several 18" options. For summers, 275/30 is the norm, but a 285/30 can fit comfortably as well on ~10.5 ET34.

In the winter, narrow tires are better under extreme conditions as they provide higher surface pressure against the road. Narrow tires also work better than wider ones in loose snow and slush. Wider tires, for their part, will offer more grip on hard surfaces.

Yep. The audi OEM winter wheel/tire package for the S5/RS5 is 235/40/19. Depending on where you live and what your needs are, you can probably get away with running all-season tires on a wider package, which is what I've been personally planning to do.

Just today installed 275/30/20 Michelin AS4 on my 21 S5 SB and they rub against the knuckle. Had to unmount them and put back the original summer tires (265/30/20). Not sure why some owners don't have any issues with the 275/30 and I did. Now I'm not sure what I'll do for winter.

I think it might come down to the fact I'm in a coupe and you're in a SB. Different chassis. If you run 5mm spacers you should be fine and might make it more flush if your offset is that different.

Thanks HyperM3. I thought about the spacers but think I may just get after market 19” wheels (w/help from Mops) and all season tires. Coupe vs sportback may be a consideration for those thinking of tours other than those recommended.

I'm running 20x9 et35 with 255/35/20 on stock suspension and I don't rub. Sportback as well.

This thread is just what I'm looking for but I have something to add too. (not trying to hijack :P)

Does et26 wheels (RS5 Offset) work on the A5 coupe correctly? and which tyre would be the best? I'm currently running on stock 19s. Using 'will they fit'.com I've worked out they should fit ok, and I've seen some picture of the trapezoid rs5 alloys on S5 coupes. (not sure if they are et34 replicas or genuine et26)

    The stock A5 and S5 20s et34 wheels come with 265/30/20 tyres.
The stock RS5 20s et26 wheels come with 275/30/20 tyres.

If I fit et26 on my coupe should I run 275s or 265s, or a 3rd option of 255/35/20? I must add I'm not lowered, and don't want to touch the suspension.

    Thanks for any help :)

    @MartyD I would do 265/30. Here is our old B9 S5 on 20x9 ET25 with 265/30 (both BBS sets) -

Thanks Mops! I had seen the Nemesis car in my 'research'. In your professional opinion do you think running ET25/26 with 265/30 on stock suspension will look a bit like a roller-skate without lowering? Would running ET34 look better? Normally has the effect of tricking the eye because it's further in the arch it looks lower, Parallax effect. Sorry for all the questions, if I'm going to spend the money I like to make sure I've got all the info.

    Again, thank you.

That’s a fantastic point and very true. I still feel the ET26 on 265 will look great and I would choose it over et34 no question. You’ll remain inboard a bit and that’s what’s important to avoid that roller-skate look.

I blew one of my oem tires hitting a pot hole last night.
Just got back from replacing all 4 with CONTI DWS06 PLUS 275/30/20. Im lowered on EMD Springs I got from MOPS.
first tried with 12.5/15 spacers and it was BAAAAD, Then took out the spacers in the front and put the 12.5 in the rear. Still no good. So I just had it fitted without spacers.
Personally if I was to do it again.. I would go 265/30/20 with the spacers.

First time using DWS06 plus tires and Im surprisingly surprised how good they are. DWS06 > Michelins

Why are they better than Michelin? Also, I don’t think you can get 265/30/20 unless you get summer tires as they don’t come that size in all season tires. Have not found any all season in 265/30/20.

I think youre right. There were maybe 2 options in the 265/30/20 for the all seasons. anyways, went with the 275/30/20. liked the look of the 265/30/20 with spacers better than 275/30/20 without spacers.
Michelins were good but they really didn't last that long for me. Heard the dws has better longevity. went on the first highway run today and although they are pretty noisy, they seem a tad quieter than the michellins.

MOPS - a 285/30 on a 20x10.5 et34 is very specific. what wheels even fall under that without going custom? I'd love to go 285, but can't justify super expensive wheels, wnything in the 500ish range per? Also, if going that setup, can you lower or will it rub?

Yeah I know ET35 works with 285, so I said ET34 for a bit of room haha. Take a look at the HRE FF wheels, as they offer 10.5 ET35. You be looking at ~$640 per, but you might find it worth the extra spend if you like any of the offerings. And yep, you could lower and be rub free.
