    Oil extractor tool

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just ordered this tool from amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought it to do oil changes. I like the idea of not having to crawl under the car just to do an oil change.
Anyone have experience using this tool? Is it very effective? Or should I stick to gravity draining out the oil pan?

I never have used it, but when I had my golf R, I watched quite a few videos and contemplated it before it was wrecked.

I have a similar one and that’s how I’ve changed the oil on all my Audi’s. No need to get under since the oil filter is on top. Just be careful not to extract the oil when it’s too hot. It can deform the tube and get stuck inside the dipstick tube/oil pan.

    Well...

I used an oil extractor on my 2004 B6 Audi A4 1.8t for a number of years...the suction tube from the extractor was able to extract nearly 99.9% of the oil in the B6...

Using the oil extractor on my 2015 S3 2.0L...the oil extraction tube cant get into the right place...I have to go under car and pop the pan drain to get "all" the oil.
    2015 S3 with 210,000 miles with new 2019 Q5 motor. Still going!

How well does it work when the oil is cold? Reviews on amazon said it was best to attempt when oil was at operating temp.
But I don't plan on driving the car again till the oil is changed, so Ill be working on a cold engine.

If too cold, the oil is more viscous , slow moving. Too hot and danger of damaging suction tube, loosing a piece in the crankcase (disaster). 50 t0 60 C works well.

I use a Topsider which has a short and squat metal tank. I bring the used oil in the extractor to recycling in the car trunk without fear of spilling.

The suction tube can overtravel. I stop the hose at the first point of resistance and virtually all the oil comes out on my MY S3.

I recommend a funnel which securely lips into the oil fill tube for easier/cleaner fill ups. Get the one with the metal clip, not plastic.

I used cheap ($17) battery powered pump extractor from Amazon. It worked pretty well, except I stuck the suction tube too far down and ripped a chunk of it off trying to pull it out. What should’ve been a 10 min oil change ended up a serious pain as I had to drop the oil pan to get the torn chunk of plastic tube out.

So my advice if you use any extractor is to mark off on the suction tube the length of your dipstick and don’t go too far past that mark.

Once the oil is at operating temperature, I let the car cool for about 15 minutes or so. I’ve never used my extraction tool with cold oil.

I typically rotate my tires and do a full inspection of brakes and suspension with every oil change so I set up my quick jacks and get the car in the air. Once that’s done, and all my materials are together, I’ll start extracting the oil. As another member posted as well, it’s a good idea to use the length of dip stick and mark it the suction tube so your not just jamming more than you need down into the pan.

Unless you're talking about near freezing temperature, you should be fine doing the oil change cold. It just takes a bit longer, that's all. I always let my car sit overnight and then change it the next day to give it time for all the oil to get drained into the pan - never an issue. Just start the process and work on something else while the oil is getting sucked out. It didn't really matter to me if it takes about 20 minutes with hot oil or about 40 minutes with cold oil.

I used a Mityvac brand extractor and its a breeze. Easiest oil change ever.

LOVE mine. I bought the OEM tools and I won’t get under the car again for changes. No point.

Do you ever have any issues with yours? I just got mine today. When you pump it and get it going, it stops shortly after. What am I doing wrong?

Happened to me too. There’s a little rubber nub on the top of the extractor, pull it out and release the pressure, then put it back in. Pump the extractor and the oil should start flowing again.

So I got it to work. The issue is the tube wasn't in far enough. I took the advice of others and marked off the length of the dip stick but only going in that far was not far enough.
