Definitive 2018+ Q5/SQ5 retrofit trailer hitch info.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just completed a retrofit trailer hitch installation and have definitive part numbers, since there's not much concise information for this, as Audi won't release part number info.

I called Audi USA asking for the part numbers for the trailer module and the harness that connects the module to the hitch lighting plug; they [literally] refused to give those numbers, saying that they [must] be bought as a package (their package is damn near $1K).

I found a harness 500 miles from me (made by westfalia) and emailed them to see if I could buy the harness before resorting to drive 1000 miles round trip; they refused, saying the harness is proprietarily made for Audi and they couldn't "legally" sell it themselves.

Anywho, this is everything you need.

Both the 80A092115 hitch and 80A092115B hitch are the same hitch, just with different plugs. 80A092115B is also the designation for the ENTIRE hitch kit from Audi.

    Harness is Wesfalia #305 514 321 003

    Module is 4M0 907 383 F

Once it's all installed, you need to recode via VCDS otherwise errors will be rampant. Follow the thread at this link https://forums.ross-tech.com/index.php?threads/16174/ Refer to Ahorvath's coding in the FIFTEENTH post in that thread. (second from bottom of thread.)

    Hope this helps!

Blows me away the weirdness about Audi with this Gen of hitch.

Our dealer in Canada installed the oem hitch and a controller for our 2018 Q8. The wiring harness for the controller was pre-wired and already installed.

Does the OEM Audi hitch frame install without removal of the rear bumper cover? Seems like it mounts from the bottom rather than on the crash bar like most of the aftermarket hitches. Would love to not have to pull the rear apart as much.

Pretty sure the bumper is removed as the OEM unit replaces the entire crash bar with an integrated crash bar / hitch.

I have an aftermarket hitch and it also replaces the crash bar. Everything requires removing the bumper.

does anyone have info on the hidden/swing away hitch OEM part number? my SQ5 has the following code 1D8 or AHV "Trailer Hitch Provision"
    Screenshot 2024-01-23 at 8.18.43 AM.png

id like the swing away model.
I already have the button to raise/lower rear shocks based on trailer/no trailer.

I understand I would need the modified switch that actually lowers/raises the trailer ball...

That’s a European style hitch. I’m not even sure those are legal to use in the US.

Yeah, the pivoting hitch, manual or electric, is not US regulation compliant.

The B9 Q5 US market hitch is a standard tow bar design that replaces the crash bar. It's sold only as an accessory, not as a factory installed option. Thus why all US B9 Q5 are 1D8 (trailer prep).

The p/n for the towbar accessory for NAR is now 80A092115H (previously F, previously D, ...).

Question for those who installed the OEM hitch, did you buy the mounting bracket for the control module part 80A.907.297? Or did you find another way to secure the control module. It's $120 CAD for a little plastic bracket.

After I bought the OEM hitch, I realized this additional part is recommended. I think its crazy it isn't included in the kit for the price, but here we are.

Bought one off fleabay for $30

You will also need the plastic nut and screw where it attaches to sheetmetal. Cheaper on amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BJ87NJK5...roduct_details

probably not needed and could have used a couple of zip ties but figured at that point another $40 was worth it to be 100% OEM

Also paid $200 for the dealer to apply the SVM code.

if you are going to code it yourself with VCDS PM me and i can send you the before and after coding, or it may be up on the VCDS forum by now as i had sent them the info.

I installed the hitch today, I actually found my car had the bracket already installed, behind the amp on the driver's side. The bracket has two openings and one was in use for some other module (parking sensors?).

Now I just need to code it, I fed the wiring harness into the correct area but left it unplugged until I figure out what to change in VCDS.

I made the coding changes today and managed to clear all malfunctions. One thing I have learned, coding is really situation specific and the coding changes done by the official SVM process (code that comes with hitch that allows Audi dealer to update software) might not work. I had errors when I coded my trailer module exactly like someone with a 21 SQ5 that had gone to Audi.

The whole process is a bit of a puzzle and I spent much of the day on it. It seems the new trailer hitch part numbers are coming with a different trailer module. I bought hitch 80A092115D and the trailer module included was 8W1907383A not 4M0907383F. I needed a unique long code for the trailer (69) module to clear the malfunctions.

The other issue is there is long coding work that should be done, but won't cause a malfunction if you don't. For instance, the engine module never caused a malfunction after connecting the trailer wiring, but there is a long coding change that tells the engine module that you have a trailer.

    I just ordered 80A092115F from genuineaudiparts.com for $635

Seems like the best price for brand new OEM on this part, I'll be installing it in the next week or so.

Hello. I have the rare UK version of the module. I live in the USA and it does work on a USA car. SMAC helped me program it correctly. If you want it I can sell it to you. It 100% works. Will work on the UK hitch or American hitch (which I am also selling). FYI the newest bumper is 80A092115.F. This supersedes the other ones.

    I also have the wiring harness. 3055 143 210 03 for sale

I agree with the above information. You cannot buy these parts separately. They will not sell it to you. Also, they will never speak out the part numbers. I assume they fear you will buy it from another shop or online. So the dealer keeps this info a secret unless you go to the counter and buy it there.

    Whole bumper kit is: 80A092115.F
Inside the shipping box is a white box containing the wiring harness etc. Box has a code on it: 80A055203E
Inside the white box is the Westfalia cable: 3055 1432 1003

Did the install today, took my time and it took me about 4-5 hours. Could have done it faster but I was taking some lunch and beer breaks.

The part # I ordered came with all the parts and hardware EXCEPT the mounting bracket for the trailer brake electrical box

    80A.907.297
    Page 8 Chapter 4.3 Item 1
    https://pim.audi.com/pdf/EBA/EBA_80A..._en_221024.pdf

I have the B&O sound system and the mounting bracket is designed to install where the amplifier is . I'm personally going to run without it, but if you don't have B&O, you might want to consider that part as well.
I will probably just velcro my box to a nearby area. As of right now I don't have the box plugged in, since I will get error codes... I'll take it to the dealer at a future date. I just need the hitch for a bike rack right now.

If you have basic knowledge of tools and the tools required, this job is quite simple aside from some tedious trim removal. Definitely give yourself a day to do it just in case.
I followed the pdf above AND this video - https://youtu.be/rAXSuHflHSM?si=Kd2fTODwkTasVZdA it's in Russian... but it gave me a visual of where all the hardware removal was. Very helpful

I have the 2018 SQ5 with the downward "fake" exhaust. I almost thought I would need a new bumper, but the OEM bumper for my model fits around the hitch PERFECTLY. No worries there, but the bumper does take some effort to get around the hitch, then line up all 4 of your fixed bolts into the respective holes. I did it myself, but a second person would help for sure.

Only tips I can really provide:
Wheel well trim has two clips on each side that need to be squeezed/compressed to remove, if you force it, you may snap the clips, they're kinda thick so maybe not but the clips are in a relatively tight spot so I recommend having a log plastic pry tool or something simliar.

4 large bolts hold the OEM hitch on, these should be torqued to 60Nm (44ft lbs) (reference the pdf link above - page 10)

I can try to answer any other questions, but remember right now I've done nothing with the harness except route it and have it ready to plug in.

I just completed this install over the weekend on my 21 SQ5.

I acquired the wiring and module from eBay for $100 and the hitch itself for $150 from a scrap yard.

Install was as described above. Longest part is getting the rear trim pieces out to get to the bolt holes.

    Coded via OBD11.

VCDS is a tool for accessing functions within the control module. Other tools wouldn't be worth much if they couldn't invoke those functions too. There's a lot more to like about VCDS over OBDeleven, and some things that OBDeleven can offer over VCDS, depending on your task. But both can access measuring values, long coding, adaptations, and basic settings (well, OBDeleven can if you have the extra cost subscription active).
