Question 2011 Audi Q5 ENGINE DONE before 100K miles????? PISTON PROBLEMS

    Hey all,

I wanted to ask you all for your opinion. Has anyone else had an issue with their 2011 Q5 where the engine is said to be so damaged that it'll cost 17K to replace it (Dealership quote)
We have had the car for about 5 years. After purchase we learned that there was an oil consumption issue with these cars. We had work done at the dealership 3 years ago or so where it was like 4-5K work to fix this issue.
Fast forward few years and just a month ago after filling up gas, car was driven 3 miles and started to act weird, shaking and not driveable. (first thought was bad gas)
OBD reader gave Codes for Cylinder Misfire and all types of codes. Ended up Replacing the master fuel pump, replaced Camshaft and Crankshaft sensor and the Maf sensor, Nothing resolved the issue.
Took it to Audi and after 180$ they simply stated that engine was done and needed complete engine replacement, everything was broken inside (Replace long block, transfer components, mechanical malfuntion) and quoted 17K for repair.

I just never heard this happen to a car under 100K miles, specially for Audi

Let me know what you all think.

    Thanks

I am assuming this is a 2.0T engine? Those engines from that timeframe in general had a number of issues, with piston rings and engine internals being a part of that. The 2.0T wasn't exclusive to Audi, it was used in a ton of VW models as well and you can go research all of the various problems they had. I would look into it a little more, pretty sure there were numerous class action suits you may be eligible for based on even the oil consumption issue you had previously. Might at least get your money back.

That price is insane though, you could find a decent engine and have it swapped out for far less than that. Find a good independent shop, you are only 30 minutes from NGP in Manassas, they could be a good resource for a second opinion and another price. Dealer is likely quoting that high because they don't want the job and trying to get you to go somewhere else anyway.

Unfortunately it does happen, and there are more reasonable options out there, but I would be looking into some of the options mentioned above, and if you do an engine swap, maybe see if you can find a newer one that was less prone to those types of issues.

These 2.0T engine replacement prices keep going up. I think $17k is the new high score.

You can find a low mileage used engine from LKQ out of a 2013 or newer Q5/A4/A5/Allroad and have that installed. A common issue on the 2.0T is the timing chain tensioner, a 2011 likely would have had the original version which was prone to failure. Many people replace this as a preventative measure, a 2013 or newer motor will have the updated timing components as well as be less prone to oil consumption.

    Thanks for the reply everyone!
The guy at NGP in Manassas was very helpful and direct. I was advised to see what Audi can do because of this known issue.
So after calling Audi and looking up in the system, they had 10 year or 100K for Timing chain issue and same for water pump issue. (I guess i am 9 months over that timeline )
They want like 4-7 hour of service charge (800-1600) to tell me what the exact issue is in detail, after i already towed the car to them +200$ charge only to have them tell me engine is damaged "Turning cam by hand the rocker arm not moving, head brake up top"
They did pistons work and crankshaft seal etc back in 2017 so im really thinking the problem is coming from there, no reason 98K car's engine should be in this condition.
I really need to take the cover and check the condition of the Timing chain and tensioner because im almost sure that might have failed which caused all the other things to damage..

Then you haven't been paying attention. Cam chain tensioners have been Audi's achilles heel for decades, especially on the 2.0 and 4.2 engines. Even where they're non-destructive (3.0) they get noisy as early as 20k.
