Good afternoon everyone!
As the title states, I am considering RSNAV for my car. I am decently tech savvy and do pretty well with electronics and working on things mechanically (like I have built my own ECU and tuned vehicles) but when it comes to multimedia and wireless entertainment things, I am pretty dull. I actually listen to the radio more often than not, and I rarely use anything in my MMI except navigation every once in a while (my maps are outdated), and use it for monitoring my car or making calls. The other half of the reason I don't really use it is that it only works with older apple phones. Well, I don't use apples. Plus, what you can actually do with the system is pretty limited.
Alright, enter RSNAV. From what I can tell, it is a glorified android tablet that interfaces with the car in an OE like fashion, right? If folds back in just like the OE unit, but has expanded useage for android stuff.
Here is a list of somethings that I wanted to do:
Enable data with an inexpensive data service.
Have current updated maps.
Run JBV1 (an app similar to waze that communicates with a V1 radar detector via bluetooth, also communicates with flight radar, to show any potential airborne threats)
Run Waze.
Sync it with OBD11 for some live data on the screen.
Upload a good bit of old in car media I found in the trunk of my Miata.
It looks like I should be able to do all of this, plus I am sure I will find other features as well. However, I have been researching it, and the information is pretty scattered and spotty, with some folks having trouble with it, some folks not, and everything in between. Is this a pretty straightforward and simple install? I can't really find any "good" install instructions. Am I in for a headache? Is it worth it for what I want to do, which is basically run stuff that I would otherwise have to run on my phone.
Are there better alternatives? Are they cheaper? If so, how much and what kind of degrade in quality would I experience? Are they harder to use due to the lower pricetag. I saw some on alibaba, but I am not sure I would trust them.
Are there more expensive alternatives? I didn't see any, but I haven't looked. Does the extra price get you tons of extra features? Would I need those? Is it worth paying a premium for easier install or proven reliability?
