Teach me all there is to know about RSNAV

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Good afternoon everyone!

As the title states, I am considering RSNAV for my car. I am decently tech savvy and do pretty well with electronics and working on things mechanically (like I have built my own ECU and tuned vehicles) but when it comes to multimedia and wireless entertainment things, I am pretty dull. I actually listen to the radio more often than not, and I rarely use anything in my MMI except navigation every once in a while (my maps are outdated), and use it for monitoring my car or making calls. The other half of the reason I don't really use it is that it only works with older apple phones. Well, I don't use apples. Plus, what you can actually do with the system is pretty limited.

Alright, enter RSNAV. From what I can tell, it is a glorified android tablet that interfaces with the car in an OE like fashion, right? If folds back in just like the OE unit, but has expanded useage for android stuff.

Here is a list of somethings that I wanted to do:

Enable data with an inexpensive data service.
    Have current updated maps.
Run JBV1 (an app similar to waze that communicates with a V1 radar detector via bluetooth, also communicates with flight radar, to show any potential airborne threats)
    Run Waze.
Sync it with OBD11 for some live data on the screen.
Upload a good bit of old in car media I found in the trunk of my Miata.

It looks like I should be able to do all of this, plus I am sure I will find other features as well. However, I have been researching it, and the information is pretty scattered and spotty, with some folks having trouble with it, some folks not, and everything in between. Is this a pretty straightforward and simple install? I can't really find any "good" install instructions. Am I in for a headache? Is it worth it for what I want to do, which is basically run stuff that I would otherwise have to run on my phone.

Are there better alternatives? Are they cheaper? If so, how much and what kind of degrade in quality would I experience? Are they harder to use due to the lower pricetag. I saw some on alibaba, but I am not sure I would trust them.

Are there more expensive alternatives? I didn't see any, but I haven't looked. Does the extra price get you tons of extra features? Would I need those? Is it worth paying a premium for easier install or proven reliability?

Unless you're looking for a full standalone solution I think just the carplay/android auto upgrade would work fine, it's ~350$ from rsnav I believe

I don't see it. But I am open to anything that will allow me to use the above apps on my MMI system. The less work the better.

    Edit: I found it here:

    https://rsnav.com/products/wireless-...nt=43929174480

    And they state this:

*This is just a multimedia interface and does not run any iOS, Android Apps by itself.

Basically it runs like android auto and apple carplay does on c7.5 cars, it's basically a car-focused interface that runs on your phone but mirrors to your car.

I see, I was looking for something more standalone than that. I don't mind keeping the stock screen if there is a standalone module I could use which is less expensive. I am basically looking for there to be the same functionality whoever is behind the wheel, without the need for phone set up.

Yeah I don't think there's anything that's been known to be reliable and well made like the rsnav unit

    I've installed RSNAV standalone 10.25" in my 2017 S7.
The standalone unit doesn't fold but it looks very OEM like in current models. It changes how you interact with the car (for the better in my opinion) and makes the car feel up to date.

One thing that you've not addressed is whether you need touchscreen. If yes, standalone unit is a must as OEM screen is not touch enabled.

The standalone unit can run wireless Android Auto (tried it) and Apple carplay (haven't tried it).
I keep finding that Android Auto has such compromised functionality in name of enabling ease of use, that I spend much more time tapping around to do what I need. So I just run full android apps instead Auto version of these.

Android auto using a spinner dial is a torture and to me touchscreen is a must.

I'm on Tmobile and they had a promotion to add an additional line for free. My plan has unlimited data and I got that additional line and put it into RSNAV and it works like a charm. I stream about 4gb of data through RSNAV for "free".
The cell signal reception of standalone unit is also much better than that of smartphone, which makes this approach much better than Android auto dongle thing. But you need to stick on a small rectangular antenna onto a front windshield. Not a bit deal for me but FYI.

I need to join MS Teams meetings from my car everyday and this solution works really well.

Installation wasn't super hard other than the unit I got was the newest version and wire harness was different than what was in instructions.
You do need to pull a ton of panels and plugs so it is a bit unnerving for OCD type if you're afraid of scratching anything. I didn't scratch anything being very careful but broke one mounting tab on a trim and just replaced the entire trim for $30.

Rsnav support is terrible and if you get a response from Daniel it feels like you've just seen a unicorn.

RSNav standalone unit is a great upgrade that makes the car feel a lot newer than it is. The longer I've had it, the more functionality I find from the dedicated android side of things.

how is the installation - is it easy? Thinking about either getting the RSNAV ($800) or getting just CarPlay activated which is around $100 or so.

This is why I have considered using the alibaba/ebay ones. Support sucks, and you have to figure it out on your own anyway, Why pay more. Although the cheapies on the auction sites could very well have Chinese spyware on them.

Would you be able to recommend top 3 or 5 apps or settings that you think had the biggest impact on the Rsnav functionality?

For me it was the standalone sim card but I haven't had much time to explore apps or settings.

I understand RSNAVs hardware (Android components) is supposed to be better than a lot of alibabas ones. But that claim comes from RSNAVs literature so take it for what it's worth.
Daniel used to be very active on this forum, which is why I went with his unit.

Easy is relative. If you know how to pull panels and connectors, then I'd say yes, it's easy but somewhat lengthy. Think 3-4hrs if you take your time.
The second time around its take me 1hr but first time you're going to have to pause to figure out how to pull things.

Running Waze w/ split screen any other app is great. Wireless AA is great since I setup up Tasker app. I use Torque w/ a bluetooth OBDII. I watch youtube if I'm waiting somewhere in the car.

Does the RSNAV standalone unit support all of the MMI functions? New in the Audi world and want one for my S7 too. Only concern is how I communicate with car settings.

I got a unit from AliExpress that swaps the screen for an android tablet also, so far it’s been great and looks pretty close to factory

I like the way those retain the folding in too. If they work for $500 I'll do it.

It’s slightly messing up when it slides out but I could’ve messed up on the install, I watched a YouTube where a guy tore down the factory screen and used the chassis but replaced the android screen so I might look into that but having the high def screen is worlds better than the poor resolution stock wise

So how are people liking the S3? Any issues that people have with this?

Also.... what's with the $120 shipping charge to Florida? WTF?!

That is odd, usually Chinese shipping is dirt cheap. It’s 180 to ship 2 of them to FL
