Has Anyone Made Any Changes To Their Stock Airbox??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
If you look at some of the aftermarket CAI' they have added openings to their airboxes. Eventuri has an opening in their latest version of their CAI and the AWE has the option to keep the airbox closed or to remove a panel and open the airbox up. I think most state the opening is more to add turbo noise but you also MAY add a tiny bit of power. :)

So, I am just wondering if anyone has started cutting holes in the stock airboxes for additional turbo noise or another 1/2 hp? This is pretty silly, but with so little you can do to "play" around under the hood with these cars, you can start to get desperate for something to do to it.

Dal, this YouTube video (The diy audi b9 s4 s5 intake airbox mod) shows some DIY changes. Not an RS5, but should be fairly similar.

WOW, finally a reply. :) Thank you BRH. I actually did see that video, but was wondering if anyone did it with their RS5. Not that I think it would be much or any different. I was just curious. But, thanks again!!

I was planning on digging into it this weekend. Likely replace the stock with a K&N while I'm at it.

Took my dremel to my SQ5 airbox. Sounded much better, and you could not see the cuts.

I just plan to remove the oem airbox, and see if there is anywhere it could access open air, and make it happen. **maintaining structural rigidity.

This is exactly what I was thinking but just wanted to see if anyone had done it, and if it added any turbo noise. Not expecting any HP gains. There are two potential spots that I saw that would probably give access to some fresh exterior air. One is on the bottom center and might pick up fresh air coming up underneath the car. The other is on the left side, if facing the box from the front of the car. This looks like it may pick up fresh air from the the right fender / wheel well. I do not believe either hole would be visible.

If you decide to do it, would you please provide pictures and opinions on change in sound. That would be a great posting!

If you are interested, I checked on the one I have for my 2021 RS5 and Amazon has them in stock. It is a BMC filter part no. FB960/04. Great quality, fits perfectly and better than K&N IMO

Have you or anyone who has installed this BMC filter taken a look at the inside of the ducting after running it for a while?

Is there any fine dust on the inside wall of the tubes?

    Thanks.

No, I have not. Are you asking because this is a known problem, or just out of curiosity?

Okay, I have now checked. After 3,300 miles there is no dust, no oil, or no residue of any kind. Not in the black plastic air tube exiting the airbox, or the metal turbo inlet tubing. Absolutely spotless!!

    Thank you!

The reason for my question is that I've had many K&N filters over the years for my various cars. And all of them, after driving for a while, have really really fine dust on the inside of the intake tubes. After discovering that, I stopped using K&N filters. I've had other sponge type of filters with sticky stuff in different layers, and those worked fine without leaving that fine dust. If the BMC is not leaving that behind, then I'd buy one too.

    Thanks for checking.

I've been using the K&N filter for a little over a year now roughly 5k miles, I bought it as a temperary solution until that damn APR intake gets released :'(. I haven't noticed any coating of dust or anything inside the intake tube when cleaning. I did notice that there were about 30 dead bees in my airbox for some reason, although I don't attribute that to the K&N filter :p.

I have used K&N filters for many years, on many vehicles. I never really checked after installing them if they left any dust or residue inside the intake. However, I did notice that many of them arrived dripping with oil. Where the inside packaging was actually wet with red oil. The BMC is oiled, but it is not "wet". Just the same, I unpacked mine and let it sit around the house for a week to make certain it was dry before installing. Obviously the oil will remain, I just wanted to see if any oil dripped onto the paper towel I had it on. None ran off and I installed it. Frankly, I really like the quality of it as well. And, it did add a "slight" amount of air intake noise as well. I am certainly not implying any additional power, but I can hear more air moving when revving in neutral.

Did you modify the air box at all?

My experience with the dust is really ultra-fine dust, not a lot, but it ran along the intake tubing here and there, after using K&N for a while. I mean the dust is so fine that it's lint-like.

Anyway, I got a BMC. It is really nicely made. Will try it out.

Did you guys completely removed the accordion pipe or you can just bend it upward with the airbox/filter assembly?

No, I did not. I was asking if anyone else had done so. If you look at post no. 4, you will see JGREEN76 has done it on his SQ5 and is pleased with the results. He now plans on doing it to his RS5, and I am waiting to hear how it turns out and where he made the cuts/openings. I am hoping that this simple mod along with the Bull-X resonators deletes will give this car a more robust sound. Not loud, just a bit stronger.

Again, I inspected mine VERY carefully after 3,300 miles and there was NOTHING in there. However, as I mentioned even though the filter was not very wet with oil, I still took the filter out of its inner packaging and let it sit around the house for a while just to make sure it was dry. Not sure if this helped or not.

With the "accordion pipe" , you can do it either way. Personally, I remove it all together since it only takes 30 seconds and allows you to remove and replace the airbox much easier. With the pipe on, it is a little more difficult to replace the box. Once you remove it, you will see it has an exact placement to return it. There is a little tab that has to go in just the right spot or it will not seal completely.

I'm a firm believer that with the airbox mod and res delete, the RS will sound much nicer. I received my BMC, so plan to tackle it this weekend. I'll take pics.

Progress. I this point I say the BMC filter is a must, even if you don’t go psycho on the air box.

Cool! Let us know how it feels when driving it!

I found the three lock slides at the bottom of the filter to be a pain in the butt to get all three locked in with the factory side. I think something isn't flat, but I got them in after a while.

Just with the filter, I feel that the throttle response is just slightly better, and pull a little harder toward the top end. Just butt dyno...

I’ll agree with you on the Butt Dyno. I expected just some sound. There is a more audible presence to the intake. The turbos are pretty small, so not too loud. It is nice to play with the added spooling sound

Yes, you must be sure to "push" down evenly on the filter before turning it to lock it in. It has a tight rubber seal at the bottom, which is a good thing, that must be seated properly and then it will line up easier and be easier to turn. And yes, definitely a bit more intake noise.

Awesome. Okay, question time. I am having a little difficulty in determining where the cuts were made. It looks like a large- elongated cut center bottom. Another smaller rectangular cut by the wheel well. And, a triangular type cut in the front. Is any of this correct? Also, can you see any of the cuts with the box cover back in place? Last, can you tell how much of the difference was the filter and how much were the cuts? But it does sound like you are saying there is a noticeable difference, correct?? I definitely want to do this with the front resonator deletes.

Yes, thank you. Looks like three openings. None on the bottom and all three toward the front corner and wheel well. Obviously, none facing the engine. Thanks for sharing!!!

Glad to help. After I took this picture I made those two hole taller. When you start digging around is makes good sense for them to be taller. If you want more sound, you could cut the top too, AWE Lid style... In Houston, I'm not trying to get all that heat in there.

I'm not interested in cutting the stock airbox but curious if the BMC filter improves induction noise? Otherwise I might go CAI. How annoying is Audi's warranty when it comes to simple aftermarket modifications?

I have brought my car in with AWE Intake and Milltek exhaust, they said no problem with these mods as long as no tune. I don't get cutting up stock airbox since aftermarket piece is pretty cheap and then you have the option to back to stock. Pretty happy with my intake and I have done OBD monitoring on hot summer days and very little difference in intake temps with the lid on or off, when going fast where you would have the most load on motor no change at all. Another benefit is the carbon fiber is better at insulating heat than the plastic stock piece
