22" Wheel - Correct and Best Tire Size?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2019 Q7 Prestige that came with 21" wheels. I found and purchased a set of 22" Audi OEM wheels that came from a Q8. I am now fitting these wheels with new tires so I can add them to my Q7. I went to Discount Tire yesterday and they said I need to go with 285 / 40 R22 tires, because I need a set of tires with a load rating of at least 110. They said they are concerned about rubbing but will fit them after they arrive to assure there is no rubbing.

Does anyone else have experience with this issue? What tire size should I use?

    Thanks.

Tire rack lists the following oem tire sizes. My impression was the q8 22s are the same as the q7, thus the 285/35-22 XL is ok. Are the q8 wheels wider?

I'm on 285 40 22 for summers, and they're awesome. Lexani Lx20 for some 125$ per tire. I pulled 30k of awesome driving. To be replaced with superior Toyo Proxes ST3s, off from GLS.
On 22X9.5 wheels, i think 22x10.5 would be just perfect, bit of extra poke, without spacers. Run on 22x10.5 on the other rig and feels more planted.

As mentioned above and on the other forum 285/35/22 is the OEM size. If this shop says otherwise you need to go elsewhere.

Thank you to the folks that replied above. My tires came in and the Pirelli 285/40/R22's fit perfectly. I have absolutely no rub. I am super happy with the ride quality. I'm actually happy that Discount Tire stuck to their guns on the sizing of the 40's over the 35's as the ride quality has not been harshened. I will put up with the 2-3% difference in mph displayed on my odometer for now (I usually have WAZE displayed on my phone anyway and it shows the true actual speed). I am also really happy with the way the tires and wheels fully fill the wheel well now, it's exactly the look I was after when I bought the 22's.

    Thanks again.

Do you have any warranty left? If you have any drivetrain issues Audi will point to the non-OEM tire size.

Audirings4: Interesting. Never thought of that. Is that because of the increase in overall diameter, or would it apply to any change away from OEM setup? For instance, what if I had kept my 21's and switched from 285/40/21 to 285/35/21? I wonder how many people are aware that that would be an issue?

What is the technical reason for this being an issue? I could understand if I had gone with a staggered approach with different sizes on a car with Quattro drive, but if all 4 tires are the same size what difference does it make? Audi does sell this car with a 22 wheel option.

To my understanding, no technical reasons; just dealer excuses. You make a good point about the 22” option available, so I think you would have a good argument if you needed to make it.

This is a beautiful setup. Exactly what I am looking to do with my 2017. Is your suspension modified at all? Looks perfect!

What’s the specs on these 22” wheels? Do you have part #? Great look!

I've had several Audis and almost never run the same size tire that comes on the car. SQ5 came on 255.....went 275. Went 285 on last SQ5. Also lowered a few of them, mostly on the dealers recommendation.

Yep.. I’ve had a number myself and almost always upsize but I’ve also never had any drivetrain issues because I don’t keep my cars for long. If I was in for the long haul I’d be more cautious because the dealer could point to my non-OEM tires sizes and say they caused the issue.

I purchased the wheels from a Q8 owner. The wheels are Audi OEM from a 2020 Q8. The part number that is cast on the backside of the wheel is - AU001 BBS, E 9.5Jx21H2 ET31

These are sharp on the 4L Q7!

Wheels fit with very tight tolerance on suspension knuckle. Basically a credit card would fit between. If it does not touch when mounted, it will never touch. I ended up going with 5mm spacers F/B to flush it out a lil more 20210820_164118.jpg
