Is it possible to only replace wastegate if turbo is fine

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a 2010 a4 Quattro and its making the dreaded wastegate rattle, I can hear it when accelerating, and decelerating, I took the car to the dealer and they said my wastegate is bad but the turbo is fine, car drives perfect, just has the wastegate noise, is there a way to only replace the wastegate, my indie claims he can but once to look at it first and I’ll be leaving the car with him Wednesday, so Im wondering if anyone has gotten around replacing them together, or if thats my only option. Also how safe is it to drive the car this way, is there a possibility of further engine damage if I continue to drive?

    Thanks as always!

I bought just the wastegate and bushing on ebay. I also put a rattle clip on but my actuator rod was pretty wallowed out. I only preloaded the rod by like a 1/4" and the rattle came back after a few months but I still have full boost. If you swap only the wastegate you should also make the rod adjustable while you have the turbo off.

I had mine replaced with the Forge FMACVAG08 - been running it for 5 years or longer now, no issues. This old thread had good info - https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...lapper-(P0299)

Thing is, if you are paying for labor, the labor is going to cost more to repair the turbo than simply replace it. When you add up all the costs it will be cheaper to replace it with an entire new turbo. If you were doing it yourself then repair is feasible. Fcpeuro.com has the replacement turbo for $1099 with lifetime warranty. Figure 8 hours for labor on top of that and the misc gaskets bolts etc you will be at $2k for the repair total. Let us know how much it ends up costing you. Link to turbo:

There are several diys how to repair the loose wg if search no reason to spend more then ~$20 as long as the actuator is still good.

I just listed it, that's all you need is the wastegate. Mechanic can swap/adjust it and off you go. It will not hurt the car with the wastegate borked, just will not have power like it's supposed to.

With my turbo it wasn't the wastegate actuator that went bad, it was the bushing that wore out for the door that opened for the wastegate by the wastegate actuator to relive boost.
