APR Ignition Coils are Here! Plug and Play, Multiple Colors, 10% More Spark Energy!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!

    Details Here

APR Ignition Coils are designed to be a direct plug-and-play upgrade to factory coils, and provide greater energy output, ensuring a stronger and more consistent spark. The commonplace replacement of factory ignition coils with those taken from the higher output Audi R8 is popularly believed to provide greater energy output. However, testing proves that they are no more powerful than the factory coils that are found on other engines. APR Ignition Coils increase energy output by up to 10% over stock. They are a direct upgrade or replacement, and come with a unique red, blue, or grey housing!

    Features
    • Up to 10% more energy output than stock
    • Red housing with APR Logo
    • True upgrade, not just aesthetic
    • Direct plug-and-play

    US Application Guide

PLEASE NOTE - If your factory ignition coils look physically different, other than color, these upgrades are not compatible.

Hi ARIN@APR -- can you tell me if there i would be any advantage to swapping over to these from my current (aftermarket as well) coils? .... I have 2015 B8.5 allroad 2.0 TFSI that I'm currently running the APR stage 1 e85 tune on, along with CTS intake and inlet/outlet tubing, APR turbo muffler delete, GFB VTA blow-off adapter and the specific plugs and gap you recommend. I'm planning on some intake mods (bigger, deeper intake scoop) and a fluidamper in the near(ish) future.
My current coils are "high output" VELTSPORT coils for reference.
    cheers, and thanks!

PS - would have been super cool (or not :P ) if you guys had made them available in black, grey, red and yellow -- so you could have one of each and rep the german flag in the engine bay!! LOL ;)

I'm sure that the APR coils are a quality product! However I have seen information from another source that seems to indicate that the Red Top R8 coils are a bit stronger than the standard 2.0 TFSI coil packs. True or not? Dunno....

Here is what HSTuning had to say about the Red Top R8 coils:

"For those of you looking for more technical data on these coil packs, here is what we've found so far with our bench ( oscilloscope ) testing:

    1) These coils can be used on your FSI/TSI engine at ANY level of modification. They function just as well on a dead stock car as a highly modified one.

    2) They are NOT the same coils with red housings. The secondary circuit on the R8 coils has a higher resistance (more windings) than the stock coils. In fact the secondary circuits were slightly closer to the Okadas we tested than the secondary of the stock coils.

    3) We tested these between 12 and 16 volts (remember if your alternator is charging properly the input will be right around 14). We tested them between 200 and 16,000rpm. The stock coils started to misfire at a much lower rpm than the R8's with a stock spark plug gapped @ .032".

    4) The spark was visibly brighter and more intense on the R8's when compared to the stock coils @ every rpm we compared in the stock rev range. We didn't compare anything under 1,000rpm.

    5) We were able to open the gap on the plugs much further with the R8's than the stock plug with out misfiring at the same rpm/voltage.

    6) Here is what we were finding as an AVERAGE on the secondary circuit for each of the coils.

    Stock: 3.3 M ohms
    5 cylinder coils: 4.75 M ohms
    R8's: 5.31 M ohms
    Okadas: 6.2 M ohms"

In terms of energy output (mJ vs dwell), the R8 coils are the ~same as other OEM coils. I'm sure there are other differences, but that's not one of them we observed.

    Hey Arin,
Were there any general findings during testing that could say these would allow for a reliable "X" increase in plug gap over OEM spec?

i.e. Does the 10% increase equate to a 10% allowable increase in plug gap?

A lot of that will come down to your individual setup and how much boost you're running. With less spark energy, a wider gap tends to get 'blown out' on high boost/fuel situations, where as with more energy, it ignites.

    Hi Arin,
So with that being said, would the addition of these coils change the recommended spark plug and gap for the APR K04 turbo/tune setup?

No need to change the gap unless you're experiencing misfires. This can happen more often on higher horsepower builds with large boost and fuel requirements.

For stage 1 tunes, what plugs do you recommend to use with these coils?

The best plug we've used is the one we suggest for stage 3, k04, etc: NGK BKR8EIX

Yeah, we even tried a cooler plug on other applications and haven't really run into issues. I think it's good to err on the side of caution a little if it's not fouling out.
