New to me 2011 S4 Audi AMI cable not working

I just picked up a used Audi S4 and it has the AMI cable in the glove box. It is setup with a lightning adapter plugged into the cable which I think connect my iPhone X to. It charges the phone, but has no functionality beyond that. The AMI continues to say “no device connected”. I really want to play music from my phone so I am looking for some help in troubleshooting this issue.

So there's the AMI port in the glove box. In that port should be plugged the AMI to lightning cable for MMI 3G, the one with the white ring:

If you're saying you have an AMI to 30-pin cable with the blue ring:

and then a 30-pin to lightning adapter plugged into that, it would depend on that adapter product.

If you're saying you have an MAMI to USB cable, without a color ring, and then an adapter plugged into that, I don't think you'll get iPhone media access or control that way. The USB cable does work for USB storage devices like a USB stick (such as I have in my car).

I went with a Tune2Air Bluetooth adapter for my 2011 S4. It's a straightforward installation and works quite well. The small adapter fits snugly in the little net in the top of the glovebox near the AMI port connector. I can play my music from my iPhone 7 (and earlier iPhones I've had) with no issues. I also use Waze app on my iPhone and get the nav directions and alerts (e.g., "police reported ahead") over the car's speakers with the Tune2Air adapter. Others can chime in with their comments/suggestions.

ECS Tuning and other vendors carry it. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-tune2air.../wma3000a~t2a/

Thanks! I have had this on my BMW and it worked great. My only concern is it has something to do with a connection or even the phone and installing this won’t work either. In any case, your confirmation that it works made me decide to take my chances and order one.

This is an Apple issue. The latest iOS 14 version lost the ability to play music from your phone to the car car through the AMI cable. I havenÂ’t used the Bluetooth adapter but have heard the sound quality is poor compared to the wired AMI connection if sound quality is important to you.
