Angry [ADVICE NEEDED] Audi A3 Engine Replacement or Rebuild, and other compatible engines?

    Hi All,

My baby (2015 A3 Quattro) broke down all of a sudden it went into limp mode, ECP light, and check engine light came on... When I opened the hood there was a major oil leak... The mechanic looked at it and told me there is no compression in one of the cylinders and that the best bet would be to replace the engine or rebuild it. He said the best option is to replace it completely since rebuilding will cost the same if not more and take more time. What do you think is the better option?

I really would hate to get a used engine that has 50K miles on it (what is available right now) for $3,000 just to have it break down on me soon (yes I am traumatized at this point). My car has 55K on it.
I was thinking if the engine was rebuilt that may mean it will be refreshed and basically act like a newer engine...

The other question is if I am to buy a replacement engine, are there any models that are compatible with my car other than the exact one I have? my engine is: (2.0L, VIN F (5th digit), (engine ID CNTC, gasoline)

I am not finding any ones with less than 50K miles on them and those are running anywhere from 2700 to 3500$... If I am spending this amount of money I rather get a newer engine with 30K on it or less but I am not finding any atm.

I am a newbie when it comes to actual mechanic work so I would really appreciate your insight on this.

    Thank you

Check out LKQ for a motor. I think the motor out of a GTI would be the same.

Thanks guys. Car-part did it for me. For people in my position I found that if you look for “engine long block” instead of full engine you will save about 1000$ and could even get a better engine if you find a remanufactured one which is clean as opposed to having another engine that has been running a while that will break down on you.

I was told that the 2015 engine has an issue that causes the pistons to fail/ no compression and that the 2016 engine has that issue solved…Not completely sure if that is accurate but a reputable euro cars mechanic told me that. So find yourself a 2016 replacement that will fit on your 2015.

Not to scare you, but my 2016 A3 2.0t quattro has had a piston disintegrate with only 41k miles (all stock with a full service history).

Truth be told though; at first I brought it in just for a check engine light (motor still felt strong). When I picked it up, they said it was because of a stuck injector that the epc light came on. About 1 mile from the dealership, suddenly everything went to shit and I could barely drive the car (running absolutely terribly). It was at this point they diagnosed the piston.

Part of me is convinced the mechanic working on it during the first visit may have dropped something inside the cylinder while working on the injectors but I don’t know for sure (here is my piston for entertainment purposes)

I am curious; which engine do to have? I think the exact engine model appears on the sticker in the door jam of the car

The car is at the mechanic shop but I think there is only one model for 2015 Quattro 2.0 (VIN F) gasoline…

Sorry to hear about that, if it broke down 1 mile from the dealership I would bet it had something to
Do with them not doing their job right. What are you doing, replacing the engine? Did the warrantee cover it?

I was more referencing the technical engine code of the exact motor in your car (they all have the same output, but there are engine codes for the motor).

For example; this is my data sheet:

As far as my A3 engine, luckily I still had factory warranty on it (happened October of 2019). Thank God though because they billed $8800 to Audi for the work.

I should also mention that my current car is an S3 so I wouldn’t expect your data to look the same

    Yes thankfully.

Back to the OP's question about his engine; the reason I'm asking about the engine code is so that you don't get the same one again (if the dealership is telling you it was a problem with that year motor).

    Just something to consider
