2018 Q7 - water leak in passenger side cargo area

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just picked this car up about two weeks ago.

We had a heavy downpour last night, i come to the cargo area to load some stuff up and notice the cargo area floor was wet on passenger side. Then noticed the pillars were also soaked.

Anybody have any ideas on what it might be? Sunroof drain maybe?

Updating my own post, took everything apart

Carpeting under 3rd row seats and under sub was soaked, luckily I was able to pull it without removing seats completely.

I took a look around to try and locate the source and seeing as the car in itself is sealed without many entry points for water especially near the roof, I focused on the drain tube connection. Having fixed a similar issue on a VW Tiguan, i feel like it was the problem. When reaching in, I was able to wiggle the tubing around a bit, which makes me feel like it wasn't sealing very well.

So i whipped out some clear silicone and sealed around the wider part on the tube and then once it was installed, sealed around it with a thick layer to hopefully prevent water from coming out and instead going down the tube.

Sprayed the car down with a hose for a few minutes and just by luck there was a downpour for a good 30 mins, and nothing new seems to have shown.

Trying to get all the moisture out now and dry everything out then going to try and soak it again maybe even drive thru a car wash.

Great job with tracking down the leak. I figured no more leaks since you sealed that tube?

Did you by chance have an MK6R years ago? Your username looks familiar and I am thinking you organized a cruise to Waterfest from Long Island to NJ back in 2013 or 2014 when I had my MK6 GLi.

If so, small world and we now share a common vehicle such as both of us having 2018 Q7s, lol.

Yep that would be me, still have it, parting it out now though.

Leak was tracked and fixed. Had a few heavy downpours and no new water
The biggest problem I'm dealing with now is actually the fucking odor. Seems like the carpet and overall car has soaked up a whole shit ton of water or whatever and it just smells bad. Took the carpet out for the second time. Going to try and clean it again and let it dry.

Have a dehumidifier running to make sure no moisture is still chilling there. Not sure how I'm going to get in between sheet metal parts though.

If you need any assistance or advice on removing things, let me know. I have been there (not for water leaks, but instead for soiled carpet - spilled milk - that I didn’t realize until after purchase)

Milk would suck to clean up in vast amounts, I've had it happen on my Golf R in the past, and that took a while, luckily not the case here.

Appreciate the offer but took out what I needed to, and seems ok for now. I've taken apart many different cars before so I just usually end up trying till i simply cannot figure it out at all lol

Thankfully the dealership owned up and bought me a new rear carpet section. I also have an ozone generator and hit the car once. Smelling fresh and clean for the last 6 months!

Sorry, stupid question but where was the drain tube in question? I've got the same issue I believe.

Not a stupid question. You'll have to pull a bunch of the plastics on the side off and you'll essentially see it coming from the roof area.

I ended up pulling the bottom piece as well as the top to have a clear view.

I'll try to find a picture of the car with the plastics out.

Well then, at the time I posted this I only did one side. A little over a year later, my wife said the car has a bad smell, initially I thought it was some stuff we dumped out and it's residual, but after checking the rear section the carpet is soaked again. Unfortunately this time I didn't see the sides to be wet, opening the drain caps from bottom of car dumped quite a bit of water so it's definitely not something we would have "spilled".
I took off both drain hoses, reapplied a whole lot of waterproof sealant and put them back on. Currently waiting for it to dry. It's due to rain for the next day so I'll be parking car outside to check for leakage as I tried the rear and now venting the carpet after cleaning it. I might just order new tubes and call it a day.

    Back at it AGAIN.
Car was parked outside for a few days.
Trunk opened and carpet is all wet. Released the plugs on bottom and whole bunch of water drained out.
Seems like they're either clogged or leaking at the connection.

Going to probably order new hoses and just change them out.

Now to dry the damn carpet for like the 4th time now.

Figured I'd just keep updating my own topic in case it comes up in the results from Google or someone in a similar situation. I feel like I finally "figured out" what the problem was.

I ended up buying both rear drain hoses.
Part # for those who might need them:
    4M0-877-203A left rear
    4M0-877-204-A right rear

Tackled the replacement today, no different than me trying to fix the issue before except in addition to removing panels I removed the wheels from their respective sides for installation of the drain hoses. I did find it much easier to feed the hose through the wheel well inside car for the grommet to lock into place. Rather than the other way around.

Once I moved some foam and carpeting pieces out of the way on the passenger side, it was quite apparent what the issue might potentially be. It seems like the hose was kinked, I guess overtime there was enough build up or whatever that it just leaked. It only leaked inside on the major downpours, which throughout the life of the car, there really hasn't been all that many it's been through that I know of.

Drivers side didn't have that issue.

    Hopefully this is now fixed..
Did not add any extra silicone or anything this time around either
