Installed new exhaust...too short to reach down pipes...

So I just got an AWE Touring exhaust delivered today.

Got it all mounted up and went to connect the front pipes to the stock down pipes and it’s physically impossible.

I need at least another 2” to get a decent connection, probably even more than that if I wanted a nice, solid connection.

I tried googling and searching the forum and couldn’t find anyone else with this problem.

Any ideas aside from taking it to an exhaust shop?

    awwwwww

for reals though, you are supposed to start from the front and work your way back.

Confirm the part number if it’s for an s4. Sounds like you may have a s5 version.

The instructions didn’t say anything about starting at the front, lol.

Either way, it wouldn’t have worked. If I got the front connected somehow, the back wouldn’t be able to connect.

I just looked at the box and googled the part number, it’s for b8.5’s. I didn’t think that would make a difference.

I think I got it working, though. I bought a 2 1/4” pipe from autozone that was flanged on both ends, along with a couple exhaust clamps. Cut off each flange with a couple inches of extra pipe and used those to go from the stock pipes to the stock clamps to the new pipes.

Looks awful, but it doesn’t leak, lol.

I might take it to an exhaust shop eventually, but it was technically free since I had $20 autozone rewards, so I’m happy for now, lol.

I remember reading that the rubber hangers are supposed to point towards the front of the car. I definitely did mine front to back, but I can't imagine it being a huge problem, otherwise.

My first attempt would be to loosen everything up and start with the down pipe section.

Also look at the angle of the whole system. The resonator section has the ability to teeter on those two hangers, which could lead to misalignment, if not addressed.

s5 is basically same exhaust but shorter. As mentioned above sounds like you got the s5 version.

Agreed that it sounds like you got the S5 exhaust. 2” shorter is the length difference that I’ve heard thrown around before. FWIW my S4 version was a bitch to get mated up at that point as well, even to the AWE downpipes. Feels like the whole system could be about an inch longer

As everyone else has said already, you’ve got an S5 exhaust.

I bought a used version online for my B8.5 S4 and the fellow was nice enough to omit this detail.

I went to an exhaust shop with the center resonator and had them fab me two 6-1/2” long flared spools of 2-1/4” aluminum tubing for $20. The reduction on the resonator pipes matches that of the downpipes so they can just flare both sides of the spool to the same dimension and I slapped those on with four saddle clamps.

You should probably figure out why they sent you an S5 exhaust though.

Idk, I ordered it from urotuning.

It said it would fit my car, and it was on sale, so I bought it.

I googled the part number and it says it’s for b8.5 s4’s.

I made it work by buying a 2.25” flanged exhaust pipe from autozone and a couple exhaust clamps.

It doesn’t look the greatest where the stock down pipes meet the new exhaust, but it works and it doesn’t sound like there are any leaks.

It isn’t very loud, though, so I’m contemplating trading for a track exhaust.

    1. Did you get the P/N from the box or the exhaust (I can’t remember if it’s stamped on the nameplate).

    2. You were originally reusing the old clamps from the OEM exhaust right? Maybe that’s a dumb question...
