2021 Audi Q7 Matrix Light Upgrade

Does anyone have technical/electrical knowledge on whether it is possible to upgrade to the Matrix headlight on a 2021 Audi Q7 if you did not purchase them into the car? Is it plug and play by any chance?

Most anything is possible, depends on how much coin you're willing to spend.
Kufatec does this at their shop only and will not ship the parts?

So if I need an extra control module as well as harness then it’s not true plug and play. I was thinking of getting the OEM headlights myself, remove the old one and just install as is.

Not plug n' play I'm sure. I did a Full LED retrofit on my C7 A7 from Xenon plus, and needed the headlamps, harness, module, and coding. There was a fair amount of labor involved. The most involved task was fishing the wiring through the firewall to the new module. I had the dealer do it. The headlights alone will cost at least 5k.

Additionally, there's got to be a reason Kufatec won't ship a kit?

Thanks for the feedback. I guess I’ll just have to live without. If it was plug and play I would have just order the parts from the dealer and install them myself.

Did you get those headlights done @okayhoang?

  8. #8
I didn’t. Apparently not only does it cost a lot but it’s quite intensive in labor to get it done properly. It’s not an easy plug and play. I wouldn’t mind getting it if all that required was bumper and headlight removal and unplugging the old plug to plug in the new ones but it’s not as simple as that.

I have checked into that a little bit, since I have matrix lights already. Wiring harness is slightly different and also we are missing front vehicle level sensor (to start with). Matrix lights without laser would be an easier to retrofit since wiring is almost the same as basic led lights. On other hand matrix lights with laser requires an extra power supply, bigger size wires and wiring is much more complicated.
Probably most anyoing job will be to run the wires from comfort convenience module (46) in the trunk to the left front vehicle level sensor and switch couple of wires at vehicle electrical system control module (09) and then of course coding bunch of modules for matrix lights. Also I’m not sure, if (09) module software is the same and able to control matrix lights just by changing coding. However hardware part number for vehicle electrical system control module (09) seems to be the same for basic led, matrix and matrix with laser.

Finally I was able to install front left level sensor and ran the wire harness from the sensor to the trunk where it got connected to central convenience module (46). Changed long coding to “front & rear sensors installed”. In next few days I’ll find some time to work with vehicle electrical system module (09) under the dash and will swap some wires so I can install and connect Matrix Laser headlights. And then the fun part - codings and programming.

Headlights installed and connected. After switching wires at vehicle electrical system module (09) and changing coding, I got headlights to work.
Everything is working, except high beams. Turn signals, marker lights, low beams and fog lights (all weather lights) working fine.
I need coding for Driver Assist Module, since VCDS doesn’t have any description. If anybody could get me a full scan of their Audi with matrix - laser lights, I would really appreciate!

Thank you for your write up @DTAUTOinc

I stumbled on the thread regarding this topic at the other Audi forum only if it was simpler for me to go from Standard LED to Matrix LED I would jump on the opportunity.

    Standard LED

    Matrix LED

Done!!! Matrix lights retrofitted and functioning.
Here is quick summary what you need:
Matrix headlights ( with laser or without, your choice)
New On board Power Supply Module (J519)
    Modify wiring at J519 module
Add 2 (30A) fuses to the fuse box and run wires from the fuse box to module (J519) (headlight power supply)
Add 2 pigtail wires (CAN_L and CAN_H) to Driver Assist Module (J1121) pin 8&9 and run those wires to module J519 pin 42&43
Add front left suspension level sensor and run 3 wires from the sensor to module 46 ( trunk, left side)
    Change coding for module J519
    Change coding for module J1121
Change coding for module 46 - comfort convenience
ODIS to program a new J519 module and VCDS to change codings

By any chance you have photos of the process and the part numbers of all parts needed other than the misc items?

I didn’t take pictures, just very few for my own memory, so I don’t forget where and how I connected the wires.
    Part numbers needed:
    Headlights with laser:
    4M0-941-085-B
    4M0-941-086-B
    Control Module (J519)
    4N0-907-063-JN or
    4N0-907-063-JE
Driver Assist Module Pins with wire pigtails
    (1) 000-979-049-E
Also you will need (2) Pins with wire pigtails for the fuse box. I don’t know parts number since I didn’t buy them, just removed from a used Audi fuse box at my shop
    Vehicle level sensor
    4M0-941-285-C or
    4M0-941-285-D
Also you will need Pins with wire pigtails for level sensor wires to connect to module (46) - central convenience module. I didn’t buy them either, since pigtails were the same as seat control module connector. I had one in a shop and I used pigtails from it.
    15ft of 24AWG, 3 conductor cable for
    level sensor
    5ft of 24AWG, 2 conductor cable for
    CAN_L and CAN_H wire connection
Wire shrink wrap, cloth tape, crimp pliers, soldering gun, zip ties and connector pin release tool is a MUST!!! Oh and lots of patience, Lol

That’s some true determination to go laser but it was from matrix to matrix with laser right? It doesn’t sound too crazy but from standard LED to matrix may be overwhelming for me.

I got mine on eBay, some junkyards might have them too, but their asking price reflects dealer msrp, Lol. Also, if you go with matrix only lights, you will not have animation or light dance so called. I might be wrong, but just double check on that if you want that feature. Yes, it’s a bit easier and less complicated retrofit if you do no laser.

    Congrats! Impressive work done!
Since I just upgraded my j519 to JN, really eager to do this as well.
It would also be great if these were sold for facelifted Q7s

    Hi

Interested to understand the difference between Matrix and HD Matrix installation. Also, is the rear cluster sweeping and light show animation merely done via coding?

I have just bought an SQ7 but the parts shortage means base LEDs are fitted. I intend to swap for Matrix or HD Matrix at some point soon. Not too fussed about laser high beams, so if it's just a swap out and coding for the Matrix, great.

    Thanks!

2021 Q7 comes with 3 different headlight options: regular LED headlights, Matrix headlights and Matrix headlights with laser beam. So either you go with Matrix lights or Matrix lights with laser.

Thanks - my question was more on your comment around easier installation of Matrix vs Matrix with Laser. Is the former just coding and new units with no wiring modification?

It’s almost the same work. You still have to run extra wires, replace J519 module, install front left suspension level sensor, codings & dataset for Matrix lights. I might be wrong, but Matrix lights without laser, doesn’t have light animation. So if I was you, I would just go with the best ones - matrix with laser.

Stumbled across this thread. Do you think it's possible to upgrade the Q7s HID headlights to the full LED (non matrix)?
