First oil change for B9 SQ5

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello,

I wonder at what mileage the first oil change should be done. I’m thinking about at 5k miles. The dealer may tell me to wait until 10k miles due to special additives added in the factory oil to help breaking in the engine. Same story I’ve heard in the past.

When was your first oil done on your SQ5? Mine has 2k on it now and it doesn’t seem burn any oil. Is there an oil dip stick available for 2021 SQ5?

That is what the manufacturer recommended oil change intervals. Was the oil came out of the car really black? I wish our car has a feature to indicate oil life (in %) like some other cars. I only put 5k or less miles on the car every year. So I guess annual oil change is good for me.

My car tells me when my next oil change is due starting at 1200 miles. Every time I start the car it has a warning that goes away and counts down the mileage.

There are many opinions regarding this, here is my 2-cents.

I would do an oil/filter change every 10,000 miles or 1 year, whichever comes first at the minimum. The VW 508/509 oil is very good.

I don't think any additives are put in at the factory for first fill, I do not have any first hand knowledge so just my educated speculation.

For my SQ5 I am changing oil after 6K and before 7,500 miles, that is my preference and can't hurt.

As long as the oil you use is VW 508/509 0w20 it doesn't matter which brand, my preference is from Audi dealer or Ravenol from Blauparts online. i always get a Audi OEM oil filter.

As far as getting a dip stick for your SQ5 I bought mine from ECS Tuning, not cheap but really nice. You need to remove the engine cover to check oil level with the dip stick
    https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-part...954ecs01-02~a/

The SQ5 is not listed as compatible vehicle but there are a few on here that have this and it is accurate.

If you change your own oil, or even if the dealer does it, get 1/2 dozen of the free sample kits from Blackstone Labs, and if dealer-serviced, ask the SA to have the tech take a sample:

    https://www.blackstone-labs.com/prod...ree-test-kits/

The oil sampling cost is $30, and includes wear metals pph (Iron, Aluminum, & Copper), viscosity, and % fuel in oil, to name a few. What I have found with direct injection engines, regardless of manufacturer, is the % of fuel in oil rises as the miles increase. And you ask, so what? Well, the presence of fuel will "shear-down" the oil, resulting in a loss of viscosity. Therefore, I follow a 5k miles OCI for my DI vehicles, because while VAG can preach how good their 508/509 additive packs are, the proof is in the UOA - it will likely show better than 2% fuel dilution in an oil left in the crankcase for 10k mile intervals. Heck, I had one sample with >2% fuel in 6k miles on my twin-turbo DI V6 Infiniti engine. So while I started with a 5W30 oil at the start of the OCI, at the 6k mile mark I was at a viscosity equivalent to a 5W20. YMMV, depending on whether your vehicle is used for short trips, in cold weather, etc.

So while I'm not telling you what OCI to go by, a UOA will give you a better idea on whether you can shorten or keep the interval specified by Audi.

Looks good to me when it comes out. Just got my new kit from ecs to do my next one. But waiting on my new Quik jack to get here.

Why is 508/509 oil good? Are they better than the 503/504 oil for the B8? What do you mean by good? If you don’t mind elaborate. Thanks

What year is your car? I think you are referring to the service reminder? I think it is set for every 10k miles for oil change. Nothing new there since my B8 A4.

My first change was at 4k by the dealer and plan on doing 6k intervals. 10k OCI is non sense. My Bimmer had the same recommendation and when I dumped the old oil it was like black water. Small price to pay for piece of mind if u plan on keeping the car....

Your absolutely right. I had been doing oil change every 5k on my B8 A4 and I had that car for 11 years. No issues except for the water pump. I am just curious when people stated that the new oil is good. I wonder if there are new formula build in the new oil and make it superior and hence increase the oil change interval

Yea, the new oils are stated to be super long life. On my old BM I tried to go long duration once and said never again. BMW OEM oil is Pennzoil platinum euro, on par with some of best and it looked like trash after 10k. No integrity left in the fluid. I think it was a 5w30 also.

My sq5 runs 0w20 so it's already crazy light viscosity, I'd rather not take chances going long OCI.

How many people have had problems with engine damage due to oil being changed at 10000 miles. I’m guessing not many. I’m sure the engineers have figured this out. These aren’t race cars. Every 10000 or one year should be fine. Black stone reports have proven this time after time on most platforms even on my rs3.

Key word should be fine. I don't see many Blackstone posts on the Audi forums but on the Bimmer forums, not many follow the factory recommended OCI because of the oil analysis reports. I'm speaking mostly on behalf of the n54/55 and s55 platforms. You say it's not a race car but the s line cars are still high performance vehicles and equivalent to m lite cars from BMW.

I’ve been around the vw/Audi world for awhile. Never seen a failure blamed on oil. But if changing oil at 5000 miles makes people happier, the $150 cost isn’t that much to spare.

Did my first change at 4600 miles. Plan to do my second change at 10K miles. At 6500 miles now. Haven’t used any oil yet on the MMI.
Bought an Amazon knock-off adjustable service dip stick for oil changes and a backup to the MMI. Use OEM Audi Oil filters and Amsoil 0W-20 508/509. Gonna stick with 5K intervals. Only 5 miles to work. Compared to any possible engine work oil is cheap.

Is the oil level in MMI accurate compare to dip stick measurement? Adjustable oil dip stick? Do you have a link?

Yes it's accurate. There is a post already on this thread. Look for ECS Tuning above.

Under or over the top. It’s a breeze. Undo belly pan. 6 ish screws. Unscrew drain screw. Drain oil. Put screw back. Button up belly pan. Change filter from top. Fill with freshy oil. Or you can extract from top. Boring but that’s just me. I’m old school. I like to pull the plug and drain. Ecs sells nice kits with oil, filter and new drain screw. $120 bucks gets you good oil and the right parts.

Well that would be nice. Find top tech 6200 for that price and point me to it. I bet you couldn’t even buy what ever oil the dealer sells for $30 bucks. Prob more like $10 x 8=$80

Any synthetic European blend 502.x oil will work. Even at 7 qts, go to Walmart and pick up two 5qt jugs, get am OEM filter online. Or by in bulk for a next few.changes. So Your $80 is more accurate. I couldn't try and spend $150 on an oil change DYI. I guess when one gets into higher end models, the DIY fades. Some may not have the tools know how or even the space. My neighbor pays for at-home car interior detailing. He's THAT lazy.

Bad advice. We are in a B9 SQ5 thread. No 502 oils for us, 508/509 0w-20 only and no synthetic blends either. Full synthetic only, no blends even available for 0w-20.

Worst advice I have seen in a long time. BTW it takes 7.7 quarts to fill the 3.0.

maybe some people should just read and not have any input. I said $150 as a rough price for diy. Go to dealer it’s probably $250-$300. Lazy has nothing to do with people that don’t know or don’t want to do it themselves. Everyone’s different. Couldn’t give a rats ass who changes the oil as long as it gets done. Lol

Cheapest I’ve found. Didn’t look hard. So maybe $100 diy.

I just changed my oil over the weekend. This was oil change #2 for the vehicle, and it was surprisingly easy.

Here's a video that shows how to do the change on the B9 3.0T: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npEUhzvk1Kw

I bought a vacuum pump on amazon for $65. The filter was $12, and I ordered that on Amazon after hitting up a couple auto parts shops that didn't have it, and calling around to a few more. None seemed to carry it.

I went with Castrol EDGE and paid about $65, I think, but it looks like I could have gotten a better deal if I had shopped around a little more. I bought one 5-quart and three 1-quart containers at the auto parts shop. Amazon sells a 5-quart for $25, so I guess you could get the oil for about $40 per change.

Here are links to the items I bought on Amazon, but I'll say the vacuum pump didn't seem like the most sturdy construction — it worked fine, just felt a little flimsy. There are others with a little higher price, but might be a bit better quality.

    Filter: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082MM1MJH...roduct_details
    Oil: https://www.amazon.com/Castrol-03124.../dp/B00JGQLZJ4
    Vacuum pump: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SG4FQX2...roduct_details

Aside from these items, all you need is a pliers, a funnel, some paper towels, a 32mm socket with driver and a flathead screwdriver for the filter o-ring.

So I spent about $150 this time, but now that I have the pump, I should be able to do new oil and filter for about $65. The Audi dealership I went to for the first change in Denver charged $100.

All in all, I enjoyed doing it myself and wanted to get the vacuum so I can do more regular, lower-mileage changes. Like others here, going 10k miles on the same oil just makes me a little unnerved, especially when I get close to the 10k. I've been used to 3-5k changes for so long. For me, it was less about saving money, and more about being able to do it myself at lower-mileage intervals and when it's convenient for me.

I don't think your oil is VW 508/509 approved ?

FWIW I did an oil change and bought oil and filter from Audi Dealer, cost me $75.96 with tax.

You got me a little worried so I went and looked again. Here’s the Audi maintenance schedule and specs sheet I was looking at: https://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/...19-w-etron.pdf It says the Castrol EDGE products meet the spec. But if there’s a good reason to get something more specifically tailored to the 3.0T, I’m all ears. It looks like maybe the Motul?

This Castrol Edge has the VW 508/509 spec
    508 00 / 509 00– Castrol EDGE® Professional® 0W20 Long Life IV
    https://www.amazon.com/Castrol-15BC3.../dp/B071D8TLV4

Not to burst your bubble of doing it yourself but you should know that oil for VW/Audi engines is very specific and will have the approval in the specs and also on the bottle.

Here is the approved List of VW/Audi oils, it is a long list and 508/509 oils start on page 22
    https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...61673-0001.pdf

Good to know. Looks like I'll get to do it again soon. Thanks for the info, even if you had to burst my bubble.

I've used Valvoline's European synthetic in the past on my M cars as they carry the BMW LL-01 spec. Looks like their 0W-20 carries VW508/509:

7qts will run ~$48 from Amazon.

Use VW 508/509 approved oil with Audi OEM filter and keep your receipts and document date and miles, you just never know if you will need this info and hope it will hold up to Audi scrutiny

    Exactly.

The pic above of the oil draining showing the circular dam around the drain plug hole on the 3.0T helps explain why sucking the oil out the top gets out the same amount of oil.
Another oil dam setup on the 2.0T as well.
