Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello! Hope everyone's having a good day :) my 09 a4 b8 is burning oil as expected... I've done many things to try and fix it but it still goes, but that's ok.. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for pistons to replace the old ones with.. currently the car has an IE stage 2 tune, adventually I do think ill get a k04 and a stage 3... wondering what pistons may combo best with this for some good performance, since I gonna be in there either way I could do some boring etc...

I’m stage 3 k04 and i just decided to go with the oem updated pistons. The other options were more expensive and required mods to the oil squirters, balancing, and had horrible wait times. I literally walked into the dealer and bought pistons off the shelf and threw them in.

yeah old guy i have seen those, that's why I said" stock" pistons. It was recommended that OP go to dealer and just buy them. i'm just not sure on an 09 you can do that and just get pistons without rods. That was really my point.

'09 builds had the 21mm wrist pins. To not have to replace the rods when they did mine, they used 21mm A3/TT pistons (06H 107 065 AM) since 21mm A4/A5 pistons were likely gone by then. Had they not been able to source a 21mm piston, they would have had to change my rods to 23mm versions (06H 198 401 A).

Change date from 21mm to 23mm for new builds seems to be May 30 '11.

When AoA replaced the pistons in our '09 A4 CAEB back in Dec 2014 at our local dealer, they used piston PN 06H-107-065-AM (list $215 each at the time) according to the repair order. When we sold the car 37K miles later in Jul 2017, oil consumption was negligible between 5K mile changes.

these seem to be an "old-style" pistons, just bigger drain holes in the oil control rings and from what I gather, this piston/ring style will start to burn the oil again eventually. If I ever get a 2.0T (not likely, N54 is a king, lol), I'd like to try some Russian pistons (https://www.instagram.com/forged_pistons_sti/) since I saw some 500+ hp builds with those, figured that if that's true then at their cost (like some noname chinese parts), these are real winners.

I've got 140k miles on my AM replacements, and I don't have to top off any with 7.5k intervals.

Dealer replaced the pistons on my 2011 in 2017 at 75K with the AM version. Around 130K now with no oil consumption.

Because it is less common on the b8.5 and also there’s aren’t as many in the mileage range ti start burning oil yet. But there seem to be a lot more coming around lately.

Depending on how long you plan on keeping the car should help decide between the AM pistons (one part oil control ring with slots) or the DM (3 piece "waffle style" OCR) that requires 23mm rods. The DMs have the highest probability of not have oil consumption issues.

The main selling point of the pistons I posted is that besides being forged and very attractively priced (something like 300$ for a set?), I’d that they also allow to reuse the old b8 rods.

Thinking about going ahead and doing the pistons with the timing chain for my 2014 CPMB. Going to be a giant PITA.

Facts. I'm heavily considering a piston replacement job but I'm starting college this August + I would need an engine hoist + stand, topping over $1,400. $1,400 that can go towards college, future flight training, unexpected things, etc. I'm guessing there is no concern about oil burning until you start getting to < 1,000 miles? I'm at 1,700miles a quart so maybe I can squeeze some more life out of my pistons.

I know, I'm just weighing the argument of 'should I just do it now, or wait about 70k' argument. It only has 75k miles but burns oil as all of my Audi's have haha. I'm probably at about 3-4k before adding a quart of oil. Noticeably when I drive it hard.

You can try this procedure to get some more time before you need to do a motor overhaul: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...1#post14377958

I haven't done this, but it makes sense that it could be a temporary solution to the oil rings not doing their job.

I'm currently in the rebuild process and picked a quality piston kit through https://www.bar-tek-tuning.com/produ...2.0l-tfsi-tsi/
Its a German company with great customer service at fast shipping considering coming from Germany.

I could've looked for a cheaper set-up but I believe that if a part fails replace it with something better. Hopefully I achieved building an
bullet proof bottom end and I won't have to worry about the internals going forward. I saved some money on less critical parts where I could.
I guess only time will tell !

I used aftermarket upper and lower timing chain covers. I also compared part pricing using FCPeuro, Europaparts, ECSTuning, UroTuning and GenuineAudiParts
