    A TDI thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I don't see many TDI threads on this forum. It'd be great if we had a central place for us odd diesel folks to share different interesting findings, what you've done with yours, if you've had any issues since you've owned the car.

    I'll start with mine:

    After Market options
    - Malone Stage 2
    - Ross Tech (You can do a code check before taking the car)
    - ST Coilovers
    - Vossen 20x10.5 with Michelin Pilot Sports
    - RS Grill

Issues and ownership Purchased the car at 34k miles ago 1 owner and the car now has 44k miles. Only issue I've had is the gas lid release wasn't unlocking. Scheduled to go in to replace here in the next week.
Interesting details Adding the roof box and Malone stage 2 dropped my average mpg from 35 down to 25. This is probably partially due to how I drive the car now with the Malone tune but the roof box really does add a lot of drag. Interestingly sucky!
Consensus, I'd like more power but I don't really want to take the hit on a smokey DPF delete or reduced drivability of a louder exhaust for minimal gains.

Curious if any of you have had warranty issues with the new ad-blue setup or know of additional things to improve performance.
They want you afraid of your neighbors, your community, your family, your ability to support yourself, terrorists, climate change, China, Russia, Covid. As long as you are afraid, and won't unite red or blue, they win.

Not a bad idea on the thread. I know I personally miss a bunch of posts b/c I am on less and less it feels.

What do you mean about "new ad-blue setup"?

Tires also make a huge difference for mpg. When I bought my A6 3 years ago, it came with some Toyo Proxes 4+ tires. I switched to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ tires, and lost a few mpg. Handling improved, which is definitely what I was after. I got that mpg back after going Malone Stage 2. But yeah your tires may contribute to that.

I did a build thread for my own car (idk if you've seen). Not done with the car yet but other priorities have definitely come up. Anyway, I don't get any smoke out of the DPF delete. It definitely smells diesel-y, but I've had friends/family follow me and no puffs of smoke, much less rolling coal. Which is what I had wanted. That said, I may go high-flow DPF to get the best of both.

    Following your format, I've done:
-Malone Stage 2 w/ deletes for ad-blue, dpf, egr
    -Darkside Developments DPF Delete
    -Darkside Developments EGR blockoff
    -S8 front calipers w/ 400mm discs
    -P3 V3 gauge
    -034Motorsport Drivetrain inserts
    -Ross-tech mods
    -Thinkware F770 dashcam

Love the build thread. How many miles do you have on your car now? I see you did the DPF delete a while back, about 5 or 6 months ago when I did my tune, they were very hesitant to provide support for the DPF delete. I think there's some lawsuits that companies have been faced with....

Thanks. I'm at nearly 68k miles. No hesitation or anything from Malone--they just straight up did it. Drivability is still there. Also, MD does not do emissions inspection on diesels, and the physical inspection is only once per owner per car. I do understand how it is now with companies being busted, but also those guys were doing idiot things.

Malone is also Canadian, so idk if the US EPA can technically do anything.

I've had mine 3 years absolutely love it. Just got my OEM RS5 wheels which came with some 255/35 Ventus V12 EVO2 tires about 1/2 tread left but wearing perfectly. With the miles I drive will last 1-2 summers then not sure what I'll do. My stock rims have Contiprocontact ..just lousy but will work for winter set.

Just mounted the RS5's up haven't even gone for a drive so no idea how they work but have to be better.

Not doing any mods till after 120k which is a long way off..only putting on 4-5k a year.

Lifetime mpg's about 35 and have gotten 40 steady flat 80 mph for hours. Got to love this motor.

Can I join even though I went the SUV route and the other other brand? I mean it’s the same engine and it’s the alternative to my S6.

I’ve always wanted a Cayenne diesel, they’re just hard to find in a high spec!

I got lucky with mine. Sport package with the adjustable dampeners, full pano sunroof (hard to find on the 2013 models), black trim, custom two-tone interior (slate blue and black; it’s pretty awesome actually).

I’m loving it so far. Had it for about 6 weeks now and have already racked up over 8k miles. On a road trip with it right now.

    A TDI thread

Great looking TDI’s so far, and that cayenne is awesome! Also, great idea to create this thread.

I have a 2014 premium plus A6. Bought with 38k miles from original owner, sold at 42k and bought again around 60k from the guy I sold it to. Currently the car has 92k miles and never had any issues. Both myself and PO religiously stuck to recommended maintenance and 5k oil changes.

    Mods so far:
    -19 inch facelift a6 wheels
    -S-line rear bumper
    -LED interior lighting
-Front lower side grills (gloss black, mesh)
    -hardwired Uniden R7

    Future plans:
-Once the warranty is up I will be tuning it for sure. Still debating if I want to go the full delete route.
-Lowering springs, shocks, and sway bars + OEM RS5 rotor wheels
-Next couple of weeks I will also be getting an OEM frameless mirror.
    -s6 interior
-still trying to decide on a front grill

Absolutely love the car so far. Even when cruising at the triple digit speeds I still average around 33mpg. Long term average is low at 27mpg since I drive the car pretty hard but still way better than anything else with this power, size, and AWD.

    Mods:
    Full RS6 interior
    S6 brakes
    Eurocode drivetrain stabilizer
    034 chassis inserts
    034 rear sway bar/end links
    Eibach springs
    RS style grille
    Wagner FMIC
    Rawtek Q5 modified DPF delete
    Magnaflow catback (no muffler)
    Malone stage 2
    Full front PPF/Ceramic coated
    A7 split spoke wheels
    BFI shift knob

I'm at about 65,000 miles. Bought the car as a lease return with about 50,000 miles on it. I'm about to install the 034 full front control arm kit as my front control arm bushings are pretty worn and clunk like crazy.

^JustASix, what is your favorite mod? Also, did you notice a difference with the FMIC?

    nthusiastt,

It's hard to say if I noticed a difference with the FMIC. I installed it at the same time as the DPF delete and the Malone tune. As far as a favorite mod, I would say either the S6 brake upgrade or the RS6 interior are both something I really enjoy.

I own my 2013 Audi A6 avant since 2017 as second owner. I named her BettyBi and I absolutely love her

I am coming from Slovakia but currently living in Germany for 10 years already.

    I bough the car with 60.000km / 37.000miles and currently have 120.000km / 74.500 miles.
The engine is stock 3.0 BiTDI pushing 313hp and 650 Nm of torque. Not bad for family wagon

    Mods so far:
    Lowering module
    Another set of 20inch rims
    Black badges front and rear
Front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser

    Future mods:
Since I recently hit a deer, I am thinking about RS look front bumper

Trying to find some dyno's of wheel HP for vehicles with the 2260 or maybe a hybrid without much lag as I want to upgrade the turbo. Haven't been able to find any info whether the injectors on the CPNB should be swapped as well if going 2260 or bigger, or if they will be adequate. Either way, looking to get a flat torque curve (not necessarily more torque) in the near future. Really wish we got the Bi-Tdi here.

Seats upgrade is next on the list as the non-existent bolstering isn't great on road-trips.

You are about read a boring post!!!

I have a 2014 A6 TDI Prestige. I have owned it since new. I have 185K miles on it now.
And I have had the diesel gate scandal updates applied.

I still love driving the car and when I don’t have the snow tires on it’s a silent, comfortable, smooth, highway cruiser.

No performance mods, just some of the basic VAGCOM stuff like windows down with the remote and 1 or 2 others. I did add small the trunk mount spoiler.

No major issues to speak of. I did my first wheel bearing around 145K. Otherwise just routine service, fuel filters, brakes and tires. I had been religiously sticking to the Audi factory recommended services for oil changes and fuel filters....and recently started doing my own oil changes at 5K, and fuel filter at 10K.

I have never done glow plugs or injectors. (Unless it was part of the diesel gate updates)

I keep my tires inflated to the high side (full load) of what the door jamb says. (I forget but I think it’s like 38-41 PSI all around)

I get between 32-34 MPG on my commute (at the fill up, not on the dash) which is about 80 % highway, the rest is surface roads with stoplights.

The dash always tends to read significantly higher then what I get at the pump. Some days I leave my house and it says… say 200 miles until empty. I drive 45 miles to work, and it will say 180 miles until empty! Clearly something is off with these numbers on the dash.

If you stuck around this long… I told you nothing special. But I have been very happy with the car.

Love all the TDI mods, gave me some ideas! But I think I like the 185K success story the most, let us know when you hit 200K.

I bought a 2014 A6 TDI with 83K miles on it in May 2019 ($15k), now have 98K miles on it. It came with 20" wheels, sport package, cold weather packed, driver assist package when it was new, but when I got it someone had sold the 20's and put 18's on it. I found some heavy 20' Audi wheels locally, came off an SUV but fit - but I think they really hurt my gas mileage for some reason. I have a stage 2 Malone tune and some Firehawk Indy 500 tires, nothing else else beyond tint and some LED upgrades.

I have a couple other vehicles but this is my daily commuter vehicle, or long road trip vehicle, and it is EXCELLENT for both. Hit 145 mph in it on a long road trip in the Fall, and was surprised that it felt like it had more - I just ran out of road. I didn't think the DIesel would get up that fast as fast as it did, the tune helped get rid of the limiter. Very nice vehicle.

    Love a good TDI thread!

Just retired a well loved 2014 A6 TDI Prestige - Daytona Grey with 140,000 on the odo. Issues - DPF & O2 Sensor replaced under warranty. 2K outside of warranty a Glowplug goes bad - so replaced them all. Glowplugs and scheduled maintenance were all I had to do in 140K of driving!

I did hit what I believe was a Cougar at 83MPH one night on the NC/SC border. Animal was very long and low to the ground - deer would have come over the hood and possibly through the windshield A6 took the hit and stayed on the road - no airbag deployment - 15 seconds later every nearly every warning light lit up and I pulled over within a mile of hit to a rest stop. 12K worth of damage. Front facia was the only body damage.

Picked up a 2015 A7 TDI Prestige last weekend - nearly every option on it. Phantom Black rolling on factory 20's. First mod will be getting CarPlay. Researching best path forward for that.

Love TDIs. If Audi would bring them back, I be first in line for a new one.

Once TDI warranty goes away I will for sure go the DPF delete route with a mild tune, looking for more MPG as I have a 1,000k mile commute every other week.

Dyno below of stock vs Malone

    Malone STG2 Dyno copy.jpg
That's super interesting because Malone is claiming +65hp and +85 ft lbs on their stage 2. I tuned mine in the exact same way and was pretty underwhelmed. I called em up and said I don't feel a difference and they offered to remap and add more fuel and I replied.... Not really interested in making my TDI that much less efficient for a couple more hp. I'm really curious in what you find out about a turbo swap and what supporting mods are required. Keep us posted man.

Love reading through all the posts and seeing what others have done. All the cars look great!

So from a Malone stage 2 tune without deletes you gain 18.3 WHP? That’s super underwhelming and probably not a very noticeable difference.. curious what other tunes are bringing.

Everyone raves about Malone but this is the first dyno sheet I’ve seen so far

This is the same 3.0L TDI engine in the Touareg, correct? This one has 291K miles: https://www.stevehahnautogroup.com/v...wa-id-42825654

I was debating selling my A6 TDI, about to hit 100K miles and afraid of maintenance. Was look at 2015 Hyundai Genesis with the 5.0L, drove one - very nice vehicle. Comparable, but different with the RWD vs AWD, naturally aspirated V8 vs turbo diesel. Lower miles, panoramic sunroof, doesnt feel as light or sporty behind the wheel though.

Going to keep the TDI and hope for the best, was out looking for high mileage example to give me hope for at least 150K miles without major repairs.

I have a '14 with 141k. 130 mile daily commute. Pretty much stock. Only thing repaired so far has been 4 wheel bearings, 2 for cause and 2 because they were the same age. Second owner, bought off lease.

I suspect the ability to drive it for a long time has to do with maintenance, yours and any previous owner(s).

Also have a '14 Q5, same miles and have had no mechanical repairs in the 80k miles we have owned it. I am feeling pretty confident in having these for many years to come.

Is it really twin turbo? That setup would suck compared to the single US setup. If you want more power just swap the single with a larger one. It's right there in your face.

My love for German diesel cars started in my 2002 Jetta TDI. Then upgraded to a 2005 Jetta TDI then I had camshaft issues and my timing belt shredded... so gave up on all that and got a 2010 A4 and oil dissapeared like crazy so I traded it in because I didn't have the heart to sell someone that oil guzzler. For some reason still loved Audi/VW and got a 2012 A6... had that for a year and Tthen I found out they had the A6 in diesel so I sold that one to my brother and put a deposit down on my 2016 A6 which had 12k at the time. I saw the 78k window sticker and didn't think I'd find another A6 like it. Which I guess I was correct because only 3 A6 were made with the Audi Exclusive package in 2016 with the diesel engine and I have 1 of the 3 in the USA... the alabaster white interior is kind of a pain to keep clean but its growing on me. I haven't had to do anything but maintenance. The MMI screen got stuck a couple times and the dealer damaged my vent assembly trying to fix if but no other issues. Had a Malone tune on my Jetta and it really changed the car for the better. Would do a tune but waiting for warranty to expire... so haven't done anything yet performance wise. Currently sitting at 50k miles.

All the stuff I have done is in my signature.Exterior%20279.jpgExterior%20369.jpgExterior%20421.jpgExterior%20384.jpgInterior%2004.jpgInterior%2046.jpg

Our 2015 Q5 TDi is going strong at 83K miles. The huge wave of torque has never ceased to bring a smile whenever it’s deployed.

The Dieselgate fixes made driveability worse and cost about 10% in overall efficiency so ironically it now just about matches its original EPA ratings. 🙄

We have really enjoyed the car and honestly don’t know what to replace it with when the time comes as nothing we’ve seen offers such a compelling combination of virtues.

I just bought a 2016 A6 TDI prestige, found one with 6,700 miles on it and jumped at the chance.

Pulling 36 mpg on my daily commmute in a real car, not an econobox.

    Thrilled.

Oh, new here by the way, joined this morning.

Oh how I enjoy my A6 TDI. Plenty of real world utilization mods for me, as I spend a good amount of time navigating SoCal traffic. Brake/tire upgrades have really changed the car, now instead of feeling like the brakes are trying to manage stopping a 4200 lb car... the feeling is more linear, speed just vanishes with no drama, dive. Only complaint is that the Koni SA's need to warm up a bit, a bit harsh at lower speeds initially. With that, the whole car really settles in at highway speeds and on long hauls you realize what this car was built for. I can easily get over 600 mile range on a tank at 80mph.

Actually worked it out with Alcon directly, as I wanted to get a color other than Red/Black. Alcon actually makes the same kit for the Focus RS in a light blue, all parts are the same but the caliper mount. They sent me a kit with the correct bracket and in blue (then I went and painted them a different color anyways...). Had them shipped to a local performance shop who charged me a small handling fee. The only downside is there are not many options for pads, I am running the one's that came with the kit and they are pretty solid (Pagid I believe).

What are you guys doing for Diesel? I'm having a tough time finding B5 around me, it all says between B5 and B20 blended.
Is there something I can do to ensure tolerance for the higher bio blends?

The bio should run better, it did in my truck at least.

I wish there were a TDI subforum, and all of the TDI info was in there. I was on the brink of getting one as opposed to a gasser, because I do love me some diesels, but it looked like the power potential for what I wanted wasn't there. The diesel info is so scattered, I couldn't find enough info in the short amount of time I had to make a decision.

My concern is Audi says specifically NOT to use over B5 blend. I assume there is a reason, they claim to not honor warranty if you use a higher blend.
