Let's talk about cargo and storage

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Yeah, sexy topic, I know.

This is the first SUV/CUV me or my fiancé have owned. One of the obvious advantages to us was the additional cargo space for groceries and luggage. What didn't really dawn on me is that we also need a way to secure whatever the hell we put back there. Yesterday, I had five three-gallon water jugs sliding all over the effing place, banging up against the sides and hatch door. I figured Audi would have a ton of OEM options along with whatever the aftermarket community has to offer, but to my surprise I haven't found a whole lot of decent/cool stuff. Mostly "universal nets" that may or may not fit right.

I even tried the OEM envelope style net from my B8.5 A4 but that didn't work all the great either, especially with the upper seat-back hooks.

So, what's everyone using? Show me your setups.

We have the velcro cargo blocks in our MK7 Golf R (came from our MK6 GTI) and they are awesome but we also have a carpeted cargo liner.

Audi has similar cargo blocks made by WeatherTech:

Same. As a new-to-me owner of a '19 SQ5 I have been looking for storage solutions and have not seen a whole lot. Would like to see what others are doing.

I have the weather tech mat and it has a bit of grip to it. I wouldn't say it prevents things from sliding but it does help a ton over the carpet. I believe the above cargo blocks go hand and hand with the mat.

Funny I have the OEM mat and it’s so slippery lol. Like a giant piece of plastic.

To answer the OP’s question I use the cargo net almost every time I put stuff in the back. I drop off and pick up 3 5 gallon water jugs every couple weeks and I use the net to hold them against the back of the seats.

I have weather tech in my trunk. Everything slides everywhere. I ended up buying this trunk organizer. They have larger versions as well.

A Weathertech trunk liner was one of the first things I ordered and it arrives next week. I saw those blocks but assumed they used vecro and secured to carpet-only, but I see now that they work on their trunk mats too. Good call, I might have to look at these again.

I hate the aesthetic of the OEM mat, reminds me of an off-road tire (not my thing). Which net do you use behind the seats? I've seen a few on Amazon that connect to the upper seatbacks, but the fit and quality of them seem suspect.

How you liking it? Did you anchor it to the floor hooks, or to the back of the seats?

I like that it has a lid. Bottom has small rubberized feet that work well with weather tech. They come with hooks but so far I haven’t had to secure them. It doesn’t move much and keeps everything tidy.

I got this one, it's very sturdy and looks great imo.

For protection, I use a canvas liner from Canvasback.com and like it a lot. It protects the whole back which is important for me.

For storage, I use an expandable / collapsible fabric organizer box which has worked well for me.

To keep from sliding around, I will put some rubber adhesive gripping pads on the bottom of the organizer - just haven't gotten around to it.

I picked one of these a few years back. Price was around $60 off amazon at that time - https://www.amazon.com/Rola-59001-Ri...s%2C100&sr=8-1

I am cheap, so I used stuff I had lying around:

    SQ5 trunk.jpg

The net I had was left over from an MX-5. There is only 34" between the child seat anchors, so you need a fairly narrow net, LIKE THIS ONE.

Hook it up with carabiners, add a few bungee cords, and there is nothing you cannot secure...

Let's talk about cargo and storage

With all that extra space, Audi did design a special kit for SUV and avant owners to restrict their cargo objects from unwanted motion.

The kit utilizes a set of rails on the left and right sides of the trunk, where adjustable eyelets can be moved around to act as either a tie down, or a latching point for a tensile strap/fixed barrier.

Here is the kit in use on my allroad, holding a set of heavy brake rotors and pads. (Canvas back cargo liner as well, highly recommend them!)

The kit is also available for the B9/9.5 PI Q5/SQ5. Happy to source and provide any additional information on the kit!

I'm interested in those rails. The idea makes perfect sense - simple an unobtrusive. How easy are the rods adjusted - do those handles twist to lock unlock the sliders in the rails? When you're not using it for keeping stuff put, do you just leave it in place or slide to the back position?

I have the same liner and love it.

It’s very easy to adjust, there are buttons on each corner of the rod and tensile strap, that allow them to be unlatched in order to remove.
The eyelets have a two sided button that allows them to be unlatched, and moved along the rails as well.

When the kit is not in use, I put the both pieces parallel to rails, where they stay out of the way and within close access. There is also a small carrying case you can get, that conveniently stores a set of eyelets and the tensile strap, as well.

I watched a youtube review of the Porsche version Love it. But it's the price of the high end intercooler I haven't bought yet. Darn. That will take some sales job with my wife 😀

Do you think the cargotech containment system from Weathertech will work with Audi OEM trunk liner? I am not sure how good it will stick to it?
