3.0 PCV questions - how do I know its going bad?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I know that eventually all of our PCV systems will fail but how exactly do you tell that its going out or has gone out?

I know on the 4.0 you will get a loud whistle but I have never read this for a 3.0. Also I have read that increased oil consumption indicates that the PCV is failing / failed.

Is there a certain running condition that will cause increased oil consumption? Idle, town, highway, spirited?

Mine seems to possibly have more consumption spirited or idling.

Without tearing down the engine first how do I tell which version of the PCV do I have? There is an FCP Euro video that talks about "black top" vs "white top" model and ECS sells 2 different parts. 1 is up to a production date of 5-7-2012 and the other is for production after 5-8-2012.

I suspect I will need the after 5-8 part since mine is an August 2012 build date if I need to replace the PCV valve.

Try to remove your oil cap while the car is running. If it is stuck on, and when you do remove it there is a suction into the crankcase your PCV needs to be replaced.

I will test this tonight when my wife gets home with the car. It does not look like a bad repair to perform. I have seen videos showing putting the car into service position and without service position. Which is the better way to do this repair?

Started it up and pulled the oil fill cap, car has a slight amount of suction at the cap. Guess its time for a new PCV. Gonna do a water pump and t-stat while I am at it as well since all 3 are original with 206,500 miles on them. Think I will do a fuel pressure sensor while the supercharger is off since its just $35 from FCP.

I believe that there should be a small amount of suction at idle.

Increased oil consumption is the number one sign. Vacuum on the cap is another. If you are catless you should see blue smoke when accelerating hard or downshifting.

Mine needs to be replaced again as well. Fcp euro has a great diy video.

I have some suction at idle but I could not say if it’s too much or not. We bought it used and it has always had a small amount of oil usage. A couple weekends ago it consumed over 1/2 a quart in less than 150 miles on a trip but then zero movement on the Dipstick MMI on the 100 mile drive home and the 2 weeks since. In comparison I know the PCV works properly on our Jeep and when I pulled the fill cap it was pushing air out of the fill cap.

A half quart in 150 miles is beyond excessive. Pcv seems to be failing

You are probably correct that it needs to get replaced but I would also think that consumption should be more uniform. If I used 1/2 quart in the first part of the trip then I should have used another 1/2 quart on the return trip which it has not.

Both scenarios the car was fully warmed up and driven the same.

Trip to my parents, 120 miles @ highway speeds 60 - 80 MPH then driving around town. Trip home, 120 miles @ same highway speeds 60 - 80 MPH then driving around town at home.

When mine went bad the suction on the oil cap was bad enough that it was nearly impossible to remove the cap without turning the car off. How many miles are on your car? This is also an extended warranty for certain VIN's up to 120k miles. I'm not sure if there is a way to find out if your VIN is one of them other than calling the dealership tho.
