How can you tell if you have a tune

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just bought my 2016 S7 and was wondering if I can see if it has a tune via any scan tools? Reason I ask is it feels much quicker than any other 4.0 platforms I've drove.

dealer can. Not sure any scan tools have the ability to dump the ecu and compare its checksum against all known ECU Firmware revisions from Audi.

Alternatively, you could borrow someones draggy and do some runs and see where you stack up against tuned/stock examples.

The dealer will TD1 your car if they find a tune and void your warranty, so that wasn’t a responsible suggestion. At least include a warning...

Boost Gauge will tell you. My '16 S7 indicated 8-9 psi boost before tune; 18-19 after.

If his motor fails due to the tune, or his clutch pack explodes, it'll get flagged td1 when they go to work on it anyway. If your infotainment stops working, your tune won't void the warranty on other components of the vehicle. Also it's a 6 year old car at this point, so it likely has no warranty.

If it is apr tuned - turn the car on but don't start the engine, push the cruise control button in and hold, you engine light should start flashing. 1 flash is stock, 2 91 octane, 3 flashes 93....

The order of files can be selected at the time of flashing. So 1 flash is not necessarily the stock file. In my case 1 flash is the 93 octane file, 2 is stock, 3 is 100 octane, and 4 is 104 octane. So if you don't know which file is where and you accidentally select a race fuel file things could get ugly. Better call APR with your VIN and ask if it is tuned and the order of the files.

So long pressing the cruse button only makes the cl blink and the EPC light came on.

Here are the full instructions from APR. In your case, follow the "TYPE A" instructions. Also note, not all features may be installed (e.g. for convenience, there may be no "lock out" and you can go right to "program switching"). If this works, you know you have an APR tune. In that case call APR with your VIN number and ask them for the order of the programs. You will want to know how to select the right program for your pump gas and race fuel. If there is a valet file, you will notice right away though

There is no way of telling which stage flash you have and which program is in which position unless you have the APR dongle. The owner can select four programs (out of stock, valet, 91, 93, 100, and 104 octane) and their order at the time of flashing. You can check if you have stock or aftermarket (APR) downpipes. If you have stock downpipes you are likely stage 1. If you have aftermarket downpipes you may be stage 2 or 3 if you also have aftermarket (e.g. SRM) turbos and additional cooling. In any case, for each stage there are four programs saved in your ECU and you need to find out which programs and which order you have. For now I would probably leave it on one flash as that is most likely stock or a pump gas file. Three or four flashes may be valet or race fuel programs but you won't know for sure until you talk to APR.

Did you get this from a private seller or a dealership? I'd be asking for some money back considering its tuned, lol.

My choice. I wanted the 93 pump gas file to be the first one to come up since I use that program 99% of the time. So I put the stock file in position 2 (i.e. 2 flashes) and the race fuel programs on 3 and 4. The order is personal preference and can be selected at the time of flashing. That is why I commented to the OP to be careful and not assume stock would be the default option.

If it was a private seller the OP could just ask that person for the stage of the tune and the order of the programs. If you don't want a tune and are concerned about warranties (although likely expired in this case) then a tune could be considered a negative. For most people on this board, I would think it would be a bonus that was was included for free.

Well, that confirms it, APR stage 1 w/TCU done. Now the fun starts and I'll be taking it to the local APR dealer so they can change me as the owner and update the software if needed. Thanks, everyone for the help!!

So I had my buddy run the VIN since he works at the local Audi dealer and the car has been TD1 as of 2019 with 24k on the OD. Since the car is out of warranty by years, not millage, I'm not overly concerned. The biggest fear is the CarMax warranty and what they'll say if they find out. The car only has 27k on the OD and is in very good shape and looks brand new under the hood. But since teh car was sold to me in California with the tune already installed (proof from APR install date), I have some recourse if they give me a hard time about the tune.

carmax does not have the ability to know what software is in the ECU.
