B9.5 MMI - Update : Map is Updating...

    Hey Guys,

I have been lurking on the forums and not being succesful to find anyone with the same or similar issue as me. Accepted delivery of the car end of Jan, since it has the messaging that the Map update is installing and never goes away. I have been on the phone with audi connect several times with a few hours and always ends up in the same, i need to reset the MMI. After completing the setup, it goes back to update the maps and same issue ocurrs.

I have reset the MMI, right before a long trip to see if driving while its updating helps but i have not been successful. My previous models, the 2016 A6 and the 2019 SQ5 had an SD card slot in the glove compartment that allow for manual update instead of OTA but this one either doesnt have it or its hidden.

Thoughts? Ideas? Have you experience same issue? Take it to the dealer?

My 2021 RS5 has updated over-the-air without a problem. Takes quite a while to download (hours) before the installing starts. But it completed without a problem. Looks like a dealer visit might be in order.

Thanks for posting. I think this is for the previous generation MMI. And the link doesn't work anymore.

Theres no usb or sd card on the 2021 that allows to connect a stick.

Furthermore, there is no option in the menu to update using Usb.

    Which MY you have?

You just mentioned something that could be an issue for me. After resetting the MMI, a few minutes later after finishing the update, mine goes to Installing.... skipping the Download portion. That could be where my issue lies....

No, the OneDrive link still works. I just tested it. Also, the maps are MMI-independent.

Ah, I was clicking on the wrong link... Thank you.
I am going to download it, but as others have mentioned, the MIB3 may not have an option to update map via a USB, but I'll check it out.

You need to use a 32GB stick or SD card, if larger than 32GB it will not work, no Mac either.

For my car, it has the latest MMI, so it no longer has the SD card slot (sucks...). There are only two USB ports now.

Format the USB Stick (thumb drive) in FAT 32 and see if it works, the files are approx. 11.5GB. Drop all 4 files on the USB stick and the update should work. It is the entire U.S. not just 3 states around you that Audi offered when you did OTA updates.

Sorry, but that's not true. I have used a 64GB SD card several times with no problems at all.

Oh okay, good to know that 64GB works also. The AudiWorld members were reporting to use 32GB only, and it worked.

So, I guess for MIB3 in the 2021 MY cars, there is no option to update map from USB. There is an option to update system software (meaning the MMI itself) from USB, but for the map, the only option is to "enable" online updating. I put the map files in a 32GB USB stick formatted with FAT32. I went through the menus in navigation and system maintenance, but I did not find anything that updates map by USB.

My car is a 2019, but it would be pretty crappy if Audi removed this feature for the 21 cars, maybe OTA is all you can use to upgrade. Maybe someone with more knowledge of 2021 model year could provide assistance or answers. I would not give up yet.

I have a 2021 RS5 Black Optic Launch Edition. I downloaded the map update to an appropriate USB thumb drive and put it in the USB port at the front of the console. Then, I accessed the thumb drive via the MMI and attempted to update my maps. The MMI gave the option of selecting the USB port as an update source. Of course, my maps were already up-to-date. So, the MMI notified me that it did not find an updateable (i.e., newer) file on the thumb drive. So, it appears to me that you can update the maps/navigation via the USB port in the 2021s.

So does this mean that my maps are up to date? (Doesn't appear to be since I can't even find my home address, new home, 4 years old.)

When I enabled the update option for the system, it did say looking for updates online and also USB, but it just did not update or go further than that.

    Hi BRH,
Do you mind detailing which menu, and which option? I just wanted to see if I missed something.

    - Tap the Home Button (top button/icon in upper left of screen)
    - Settings
    - System Maintenance
    - Software Update
    - If your USB drive is in the port, the system will search/find it. If not, it will prompt you with a "Search for Updates" notice.

Know B9 is different than B9.5 but isn't there an option under System Maintenance to see what versions you have installed. On the B9 I can see the version of my navigation maps. System Maintenance->Version Info

Still no go... I reformatted the USB stick twice, recopied the files twice. Followed the instruction from BRH. Cannot update...

I did get the version of the map in the versions option under system:
    Navigation database
    V03959808LA_P0496_NA_Q420

    MMI software version
    release-33.11.2-MLB-AS-2025-SNAPSHOT-15.06.2020-16:35:05

    Media driver
    CL33_MIB3H_AU_ER_G4x_2002403PROD-1

    Gracenote database
    Region=NORTH_AMERICA - Version=4

I also just found out that my home address in the map that is currently installed is wrong... LOL The spelling is wrong, and the city name is wrong (right zip code). So, at least, I have my home address set...

In my previous car, 2018 S4, I was able to update the map via download to SD card until they stopped that. My home address in that map was correct. So WTH? Oh well...

Q420 - read somewhere Week 22 and Week 45 are when maps get updated, so you probably have the latest maps until around mid-May 2021. For mapping errors. I guess you need to somehow get feedback to Audi AG.

Wanted to update the thread with the solution.

Ended up taking the car to the dealer, it took them about 1hr to push the update using their equipment.

Also, something i didn't know is that per Audi Connect and Audi Dealer, you get 5 free updates from the dealer at any time.

So, I tried to update again with 2022 map that I downloaded from the forum here. The MMI still tells me there is nothing to update.

I do need to visit the dealer for this, but I just don't have the time.

SD card I presume for the update? Did you use a Mac for to get the maps on SD card/thumb drive? I did and it did not work...I'm like WTF, now what? Being honest, I have had enough of Audi's map updates, they can stick the maps up their German arse.

The B9.5 MMI (MIB 3) only gives you two USB ports (one USB 2, and one USB C). No more SD cards like in my 2018 S4. I only use Windows machines, so I tried two different types of formats, exFAT and NTFS, on a 64G USB stick. I tried it on both ports and both formats, no go...

I use the same 64G USB stick formatted in NTFS for listening to FLAC files in on of the ports.

    Just so frustrating...
