Car Batteries - Which ones do our cars need?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So after playing music while vacuuming my car for 10 minutes, the battery went completely flat. Tried push jumping it but that didn't work so ended up calling breakdown who determined it was dead and jumped my car with cables. Despite what he said after driving around for a bit it is holding enough charge to start the car but i definitely need a new one.

I've tried looking online but there doesn't seem to be much info and when i put my reg into sites i get multiple batteries come up with different dimensions all of which are significantly smaller than my current battery. Is there any sort of specs the battery must be to be compatible or is it simply needing enough cold starting amps and to fit?

This is what i currently have in there, a Yuasa YBX3110 - https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batterie...IaAsLtEALw_wcB

It's very big and heavy though, so something smaller would be better if it's okay.

Edit - Also, he told me removing the jumper cables while my engine was running ran the risk of frying the ECU, due to a voltage spike caused by the alternator suddenly detecting a low battery and trying to compensate. I couldn't find any info of this online so i'm curious if anyone knows if this is true?

I read once that AGM group 35 will fit, got one and indeed it fits. (yes its fixed with the bracket, battery dont move)

It saved me about 17 lbs, not much , but better than nothing !

the frying part doubt its true, if so, almost dead battery would be a problem. BMW got fancy stuff that calculate capacity to avoid burning the alternator on a dead battery, it needs to be adapted on each battery change, and you need to code the ecu in case you change the batt capacity over OEM. But nothing about this on the B7.

I couldn't get my head around the sizing. I've seen groups mentioned many times but all the batteries i find here seem to just have a three digit code, not all of them though - Perhaps the U.K uses a different system. I've also noticed people saying different groups fit, 28, 29 etc not sure if i'm being stupid but it's very frustrating lol

It's been a while since i took the battery out and i've forgotten but is there a bracket that will hold any sized battery in place as long as it isn't too big?

width is what you need. Length is not that important, bracket is on the bottom face of the battery

My old fat battery was 6.75'' width, and the AGM is 6.5''.

I went to the store with my measurement tape.

Having a smaller size battery means that I need to put the tender more often to make sure its full charge not to fry the alternator. Running the navi, heating seats, meth kit, after market subwoofer+amp, bose system, hid, fog, hvac, etc ; never had any issue in 1 year so far.

cranking amp get from 790A to 755A, not a huge deal.

Since this platform was designed, battery evolved a bit. Go with the battery width and the cranking A at the store, and you should be fine.

Simple answer H7 in you want beefy battery. H6 if you just want to start your car

Here is the Audi part number if you wish to buy genuine. It's just 145$ at the dealership

i thought h8 was the factory size? when i changed mine about a year ago i believe i pulled out an h7 and replaced with h8 agm.

This one and since i carried my old one in, the core refund was instantly applied.

my last battery came in the car, not sure when it was installed, worked perfectly fine for 4 years, only died cause it sat for about a year.

I installed DieHard Gold H8 last August and have been nothing but happy. Michigan winter was no issue for it. The fit was perfect as well.

H7 is the factory size, but h8 fit nice if you remove the little bumper on the end. H8 is only like 3/8" longer, same width, and usually little more CCA. But for some reason, the h7 batteries were about $50-$75 more than same one in H8. So I went with an H8, was about $140 at Advanced Auto for H8 AGM. And no need to worry bout coding, or anything special till b8's.

I’ve always had H7s in the 7 years I owned it and have always had issues with low voltage even after replacing the battery multiple times.

I now have an H8 and have not had any issues.

Do you know how long they warranty the batteries at the dealership? I bought the same one last year never bothered to ask about warranty though!

I remember them quoting me something like 24 month/unlimited mileage, whichever is greater; then the battery is prorated for parts only up to 60 months. I'll update as soon as I find my paperwork

It is a hassle if you don't have the means to do this yourself.

Car Batteries - Which one do our cars need?

Not just BMW, Audi's from B8 have that crap too. You have to recode the new battery to avoid it from burning in couple days. Alternator tends to over charge the new battery thinking that it's an old dying one.

I don’t even want to think about what sort of nonsense my Q7 will need when I have to replace the battery.

I put in an H8. 900 CCA. purchased at Walmart. Good price and better warranty than any other. Only a few battery manufacturers so not too much difference between brands.

Thanks for the replies guys. Battery terminology confuses the hell out of me - I can't find any batteries here with a H number attached.

I have however managed to find out that a "type 96" battery will fit.. not sure if that's a different way of saying group or what but apparently they will fit.

Sadly, i'm poor as hell right now else i would just get one straight from Audi (or a nice lightweight Lithium Ion one). I would get the Bosch S6 as recommended but it's a bit pricey, does anyone know if the Bosch S5 would be suitable, it's "type 96" so should but want to check before i make the purchase.: https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batterie...0aAnpREALw_wcB

Warranty on these is 1 year (according to our dealer). I had one go on my B7 after 13 months.

I had a failed battery on the S3 after 10k miles, then again after 4k, battery on the Q5 went after 8 months... both cars brand new (batteries covered under warranty).

Never ever had an issue with a diehard.
