Red face 2012 Q5 Power Tailgate problem, wont power close/open

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    hey everyone!

    Good to be back!

I've come across a issue with a 2012 Q5 2.0T Premium Plus, where the Power trunk will not Lift or shut itself.

The outside button will pop the tailgate a few hairs open, but it will not lift itself.

The inside "tailgate close" button is not working to close the tailgate on itself aswell.

I looked into "Re-Memorizing" the tailgate, but that doesn't seem to fix the issue.

Would anyone here have a similar issue? i tried to search for it, i've come across some posts where some people have a issue where it will try to open, but mine doesn't even make the attempt to open, nor close itself.

Any input would be greatly appreciated! i'd love to get this thing in tip top shape! other than small wear and tear issues which im working on replacing right now, the q5 is almost in perfect order other than this weird trunk issue.

My only guess off the top of my head is that it could possibly be a motor that opens and closes it, and maybe it went out?

    Thanks again guys!!

P.S. Post below info : Codes pulled, struts checked and work, CCM COMFORT CONTROL MODULE not responding, Motor possibly burnt and bracket holding motor possibly broken?

Was it opening halfway and then you would open it up all the way? Either a cheap fix like $25 for new struts (super easy to replace off Amazon) or it's the assistance motor/wiring

I had a similar issue fixed under warranty a few years back. It would open but then close on itself almost immediately. They did replace the struts as mentioned above.

    Did you check the fuse?

Okay, so here's what i've come up with so far :

I've Removed the trim, tested the fuses, and my indie helped me out by testing the motor and module.

So, the module is not responding, and the motor is not responding but he thinks if we try replacing the module and motor we should be good. I found the two online both used for about 180 total, and it needed a new L-bracket that holds the motor since that was snapped.

One question i have that i could really use help with is, if i replace the module : 8K0907064EP CCM/COMFORT CONTROL MODULE, will it need to be coded? it is a used module from wolfautoparts.

based on the given codes below, does anyone have any other ideas? If the motor was burnt out the module id assume would be atleast responsive, if the module was burnt but the motor was not, the motor would be responsive. So... both are toast? I can't say for sure that he tested the motor properly, but the module in the codes say its not responding.

I pulled the codes to the Q5, and what i've gotten are these :

the 8K0907064EP Module is en route, but used, and trying to see if it will need to be coded or is it plug and play? something with the name Comfort Control Module, you'd think it controls other things aswell as the trunk? but it seems to me that the only issue is with the trunk auto close and open feature.

the struts holding up the trunk seem to work fine

Another odd thing... I keep seeing two motor part numbers for the left and right, but I do not see a left motor in my trunk area, only the blue one on the right. Is this normal? It doesn’t look to have ever been a left motor installed in my q5

There should be 2 motors....somebody removed your left motor. There should be a connector hanging there where the left motor is located.
The right motor won't work without the left motor, as the Left is the master, the right is a slave.

My god you’re right, I just found a harness hiding in the headliner. Assuming I replace the motor, does the coding show anything about anything else not working? Is the motor what is not responding in the vcds scan or is it the CCM? Thanks again guys for all the help, thank you @S4’ed

Has anyone here done a adaptation to the J605? (I'm assuming left/driver is J605), from some other posts i see that on the Q5 the slave is the J756.

Does anyone know which modules and which settings i have to edit to code the new module to work?

Also, will i have a issue regarding the fact that the right module came with the car, and the left i replaced afterwards? do they HAVE to come in pairs? or can i just replace one motor?

I see on a post regarding a Phaeton where someone said to
To adapt the J605 module, open address 46 (the J393 Central Control Module for the Comfort System), select function 10, adaptation, and go to channel 22. Close the trunk lid (it won't latch, but put it in the fully closed position) and then re-enter 0 (zero) as the adaptation value. Next, move the trunk lid to the fully open position, go to channel 23, and re-enter 0 (zero) as the adaptation value. Now you have defined the extreme limits of movement of the trunk lid, and the new module will work perfectly.
It is important to note that the new module will not work at all unless you adapt it. This is not mentioned in the Phaeton service manual, because it is assumed to be common knowledge for every control module. Also, note that you cannot directly address the J605 module, because it is a slave to the J393. This is why you open the J393 controller (address 46) when you want to adapt the trunk lid control module.
Assuming the Phaeton and the Q5 have different slave modules, i'm guessing the module i'll be addressing will be different, and the channel may be different also, so any input on which i need to adjust would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thank you very much!

I wouldn't think you would need to code anything, buy the part and plug it in. As long as the part number is the same it should work fine, doesn't really matter what it came from.

The car already knows it should be there so you don't have to teach it how to talk to the module, that's why you are getting the error message.

That post is basically about it learning where the stops are, it may already know that, I'd just try installing and trying it out first.

    How old was that post?

If you buy and install a used motor/module, which has already been coded, I would think it would work in your Q5, as-is.
And, I would guess that you do not have to replace the motors in pairs.

I'll fill you guys in on the 13th, waiting for the motors, module and brackets. Let's hope it all works out :( hopefully it's just the motor in need haha

Any update on this? Mine is only opening 1/3 of the way. When I check VCDS it’s positioned 127% fully open and when closed it’s reading 85%. I can’t find a relearn procedure anywhere. My research says the motors don’t know their correct position and needs to be replaced. I also had to replace the L brackets because my daughters forced the trunk closed. When reinstalling the motors, I had a hard time lining them up! Is there a adaptation or do I need to buy new motors?

Don't you just teach it the full up position by holding the close button on the tailgate? Or does that not work for you?
