    Cost For Brake Job

Need to replace my rotors/brake soon on my 18 RS3.

I was recently quoted $345 for the fronts and $402.50 for the rear. Is that reasonable labor cost? Again, this is for both pads and rotors.

Just for labor? That's high. Dealerships/mechanics think it's acceptable to charge labor that is proportional to the cost of the vehicle and replacement parts. The RS3 brake job is no different from a brake job on my A3, all you need is vagcom to reset the e-parking brake.

I live in NYC and last year was charged around $350 for front/rear labor by a regular shop (I provided the rotors/pads).

That sounds like a great price for the RS3. I could have sworn the parts and labour for that model is in excess of 1200 bucks.

I have an S3 as well and the front rotors and pads cost me roughly 250 with taxes and the rears 600 for rotors, pads and labour - I couldn't do the work due to an injury.

Those labor rates are regulated by state laws and dealerships have a book they quote from. Generally labor rate is $165 an hour...

So 2 hours for the front is pretty much spot on!

Dealership are in business to make money! Period. So looking for a discount rate does not exist there!

    Shops other than dealers maybe...

    DIY it and save! $$$

    Haha, yeah...
I used to work for a major exhaust manufacturer and the sales prices were/are based on competition and what the market can bear with almost no consideration to manufacturing costs. Profit levels on more exotic exhausts were VERY high compared to fairly tight margins on something like a Honda Civic exhaust.

    Supercar tax?

To OP, does that include the parts, or just labor?

Shop around if you can. Sometimes you find better. Or if you stay loyal to a shop, sometimes you do get a bit of a discount, all depends. My guess is that the brakes are a bit more complicated, but some experts can still do it rather quickly and might discount a bit. Also offer to pay cash, that can help.

Too high just for labor, though I can never understand why anybody would go in for a dealer gouging. Go to any independent shop and pay half (or better yet, do yourself if equipped to do so)

Could just be the area I live, but I don't remember this area suddenly booming with mass affluent folks.
